Shaykh Ibn Baz Explains His Madhab

Shaykh al-‘Allāmah Ibn Bāz رحمه الله stated in his Majmū‘ al-Fatāwa wa Maqālāt Mutanawi‘ah (4/166): مذهبي في الفقه هو مذهب الإمام أحمد بن حنبل رحمه الله، وليس على سبيل التقليد، ولكن على سبيل الاتباع في الأصول التي سار عليها، أما مسائل الخلاف فمنهجي فيها هو الترجيح ما يقتضي الدليل ترجيحه، والفتوى بذلك، سواء وافق مذهب الحنابلة أم خالفه؛ لأن الحق أحق بالاتباع، وقد قال الله : { يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَأُولِي الْأَمْرِ مِنْكُمْ فَإِنْ تَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ ذَلِكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَحْسَنُ تَأْوِيلًا .} [النساء: 59] My madhhab in Fiqh is the madhhab of al-Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal - may Allāh have mercy upon him. However, not on the way of Taqlīd, rather on the way of following him in his fundamental principles in extracting rulings from which he took. As for the issues of differences of opinion, my methodology in dealing with them is going with that which is substantiated with the proof, and then I give rulings based upon that, whether it agrees with the Ḥanbalī madhhab or goes against it, that is because the truth is more worthy of being followed, as Allāh says: (interpretation of the meaning): {O you who have believed, obey Allāh and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allāh and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allāh and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.} [4:59] -End quote

He clarified that he had been on the manhaj of ahlul Hadith for 40yrs from the point he was asked this question. What’s clear from what you extracted is that he uses the madhab of imam Ahmad with regards to usool al fiqh

@@nabilyasin2088 The Salaf were split in two groups: Ahl ur-Ra‘yy and Ahl ul-Ḥadeeth. It is well-known that the Ḥanafī madhhab were from Ahl ur-Ra‘yy and the Ḥanbalī, Shāfi‘ī, and Mālikī madhhab were from Ahl ul-Ḥadeeth.

@@ibnnuhal-maliki6030 I think Iman Ahmed was closest to the Sunnah , since he had more hadiths as compared to other two . Thats why Hanbalis and Ahlul Hadith mostly have common fiqha

Point to be noted , these kind of ijtihad methodology by ur own is allowed for an alim like him, not every tom, dick and Harry. So until u don't have enough ilm, stick to a scholar u trust
