I was friends with Ryan and I had met Shayna. She wore a lot of makeup but other than that seemed normal to me. Admittedly I barely knew her and Ryan only spoke a little about her to me other than she was "exhausting." I can't begin to describe how shocking his murder was to all of us. She also joked about killing Ryan on Facebook before she killed him.

For people with a lot of issues - they often think they dealt with them and gained the wisdom to help others, when in actual fact they didn’t but were just drawn to the idea being a person who rose above themselves to be in a position where they can bestow graces upon other for being so fantastic themselves. If you essentially feel weak and vulnerable and confused, wouldn’t it just be a step up from that if you were then one to help people who feel weak and vulnerable and confused? This is not a particularly social aspiration mind you, it’s pretty self-absorbed and deluded. And those who succed in manoeuvring themselves into such a position one way or another - when they find that working with peoples serious issues is hard work doesn’t mean everyones thanks you all day for being so wonderful, affirming how it was only because you’re so fantastic and clever and wise they ever got better - they usually quit the job pretty soon, because they sense that in having to deal with all the actual conflict material and critical self evaluation associated with doing such work they will likely wind up having to face the fact that they did in fact NOT or at least only partially vanquish their own demons after all, and this was all just one huge dissociation manoeuvre. People like this do not really help others in the long term, they rely on others to be weak so they can feel or appear strong by comparison, and feel good about it because “helpers are good people”. They feed off the weakness and the people in their care somehow never walk away truly strengthened from the transaction or if they temporarily seem to do so - it’s usually because there is some co-morbid transaction happening where both parties dissociate from their true core issues and spiral down some toxic track of idealisation and devaluation acting out from their respective positions that usually involves some odd elements of dominance, submission and passive aggressiveness. Rant over but I’ve seen a fair amount of shit like that in my professional life. Especially where words and talking are at the core of whatever the proposed therapy or pedagogic approach. Lots of fairly intelligent people spend a lot of time converting their issues into complex verbalised structures which are somehow easier to deal with and toss around in conversation and manipulate than just getting in there with the dirty work. Words can offer the benefit of feeling like you are really doing the work and adressing your issues while you’re really just distancing yourself from action with more words. Talk is clever. Pain is raw. Fear is raw. Despair, grief, shame none of it is really much like an intelligent conversation. Not saying cognition is not important - but there is a fine line between going somewhere with yourself and just playing with yourself while sucking up a lot of attention and resources from others and having them validate your secondary dramas.

You will find that people become trained in the areas they are lacking. For example, unwell people will become healers, people who are mentally unwell will become psychologists etc... people who have lost in love will become a relationship adviser... people who have been targeted by a narcissist will become advisers to other targets.

@@binathere2574 The trouble is that you need: A. to have TRULY worked through the experience to a point where you control it and not the other way around. If you haven’t you’ll be as likely to hurt people in a vulnerable situation when you then find out under pressure, that really you were still trying to just save yourself or a loved one and you’re not as strong as you fancied yourself to be, being the helper and not the victim. B. To have more than just your personal experience but also a wider professional level knowledge of the phenomenon as well as how to apply that knowledge to specific situations, fields, demographics or issues. C. To understand how to work with the implications of other people likely being in a different life situations, having different resources and coping capacities than you - in other words you need to know what a professional knows about working with a wide variety of other people and not simply expect to be able to generalise from personal experience. In short: - Breaking a leg and going through recovery makes you neither a doctor, a psychologist nor for that matter a recovery life coach.

I think she is very different from Jodi. Jodi is more street-smart and cunning. She doesn't mind highlighting that the man he murdered was a pedophile in front of the Jury after stopping pretending to be a bimbo. Shayna's problem is that she thinks she is much smarter than she actually is. She might have a much better chance if she stopped talking in the room (there is still no guarantee since Ryan Poston was a rising star lawyer himself) but she constantly said things that even the least experienced officers and prosecutors can use against her.

I had a terrifying experience with someone with borderline PD. I missed a phone call and got tens of messages accusing me of cheating, which quickly escalated to more phone calls and threatening voicemail. BPD is no excuse. I’ve had it my whole life and two different types of it at different stages. I also have complex PTSD, even as a narcissist teenager, I’ve never been violent or hurt anyone. Even when being assaulted I did not kill anyone. This is not an excuse!

I know of someone that Poston purportedly dated. From my perspective, he was attracted to girls who were category 5. Maybe initially attracted to the excitement but he didn't want long term, serious relationships with them. Sounds like she overcompensated for his attention/affection by doing stuff for him even though he was rejecting her. The girl I know has a history of not accepting rejection too and doing similar things like showing up at a guy's house or where she found out he was on vacation. She, from what I understand, tells people she was dating Poston were dating at the time. Guys and girls, I think he may have unwittingly strung this crazy one along too long. Probably bc she was willing to do anything for his affection. If you don't want someone, tell them immediately and break it completely off. Don't let it get to Fatal Attraction. And for Christ sake, get your locks changed and a security camera.

I don't think it was because "she was willing to do anything for his affection." For starters Ryan was a very, very good looking young guy, was on track for success and was kind too. The guy probably had an arena full of women drooling (I'd be in there) and ready and willing to do anything for him. He didn't need this nutcase for that. He was going on a date with a beauty queen right before he was murdered...she testified in the trial. She was an upgrade... beautiful and looked sane. That said, he told her straight up he wasn't into her, but she kept forcing herself on him, stalking him and breaking into his place with a copy of his key (which he didn't know she had.) Him talking to her on occasion was him just trying to be nice and letting her down gently hoping she'd get it. She was pathetic and he felt bad for her. I can understand him as I've, regretfully, done the same in past relationships...being romantic relationships or friendships. Lastly, the woman you know that claims dated Ryan ...pics or it didn't happen. You say she's"off" too so it's not far fetched that she makes stuff up like this murderer does too. I've met plenty of women irl that say so and so was her boyfriend when in reality, they just went on one date or had a one night stand. So, it's not ludicrous to hear of crazy women out there claiming a hot guy in a high profile murder case was into them at one point.

I had a neighbor like this that was obsessed with me. Thankfully I didn't find her attractive and sleep with her but we did exchange numbers at one point. The texts started out normally but in just a few days I would get dozens for every 1 that I sent. If I didn't reply back to her within a few minutes, she'd get angry and send me a string of hatefully messages and go silent for a couple of hours. Then she'd restart with another set of texts like nothing happened. After some time I told her to stop texting me all together cuz no sane person would entertain having even an acquaintance like this. I sent her my last text to leave me alone yet she still sent141 of hers over the next 4 months to which I ignored. She finally did move out of my building and 6 months later sent a text asking if there were any mail that had still been delivered to her old address. Like a sucker I took the bait and a flurry of messages from her began again. I couldn't stay quite away and told her off in the most stern way I could without setting her off into some kind of rage. Finally that was the last time I heard from her. I still have all the texts saved to my phone in case they find my dead body somewhere.

The scenario I can’t get over is Ryan not being able to get her to leave, so he just goes to bed (exhausted and utterly frustrated) hoping she’ll just give up and go home, and then he wakes up to find that, not only is she still there, but she’s invited her mother over. He had to have wanted to bang his head against the wall. And then she spends all day looking up heart medication and texting him about her health. Why this man didn’t change his locks, block her number, and call the police every time he saw her, I just do not understand.

Borderline PD doesn’t mean someone is a horrible person. It’s one of the only PD’s where the person has full guilt for their actions and don’t want to be this way. As long as they’re seeing a psychologist and keep up with their therapy, there’s no reason to assume someone with BPD is evil. However, if left untreated they can be abusive just like anyone else with any mental disorder.

I don’t know your ex, but just because someone has BPD doesn’t mean they are capable of murder. There are many functioning, intelligent people with good hearts and morals that feel a lot of stigma and guilt over their BPD, and this is often buffered with substance use. It’s a hell of a disorder that’s for sure.

As I was listening to your analysis and understood that those with BPD feel that they would cease to exist if a relationship were to be lost and that their fighting to keep a relationship is a fight for their life, I had a better understanding of her motive. Although it doesn't excuse or justify her actions, it does explain why she acted in an impulsive manner and commited this heinous crime shortly after learning Ryan was pursuing a relationship with someone else and that their relationship had come to an end. Another tragic and senseless crime. As always, thank you for another analysis that was not only educational but a cautionary tale!

I wonder what her past “relationship” history was like or if she had any other influential factors in her life like during childhood (narcissistic parent? past unregulated emotional relationship “models” like her parents relationship?) that might have been interesting precursors to this horrific outcome in hindsight or what exactly that personal past history might look like with her. Not as an excuse *at all* clearly but more to maybe understand how she could have consciously or unconsciously adopted that extremely maladaptive and (unfortunately in this case, literally) traumatic behavior pattern in interpersonal emotional relationships? It seems like it would be very surprising if this type of crazy/batsh*t behavior came out of nowhere with her or if she really did have primarily otherwise seemingly healthy and normally functioning relationships outside of this one in particular? It does seem like sometimes in awful cases like this one that two people can unintentionally but in a volatile way bring out the extra worst kind of crazy in each other- and then it’s obviously just exhausting af and infuriatingly bewildering for the rest of the people around them (and in this case, millions of the rest of humanity lol) to watch on as it turns into Fyre Festival the quarter life crisis dumpster fire edition and somehow go even more out of control…….. 🤷🏻‍♀️😬🤣😵‍💫 I just hope that there will be more awareness of these types of catastrophic issues that are discussed with young people to hopefully prevent any more proliferation of these horrific relationships and heartbreaking tragedies for the next generations of budding young “love stories” lol!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe that’s what both of these men were going through. Still doesn’t mean that their actions (like continuing to have sex - like with Arias’ case) which did string these unstable women along, were no longer cruel. Does that mean they deserve to be murdered? No. These men are victims too. And both of these women deserve to pay for murdering them. In no way do I applaud them. I was simply stating that the best thing they could’ve done is get therapy and walk away from people you feel wronged or hurt by emotionally.

It is so heartbreaking to see that people blame the victim so much. I was stalked. The stalker would not leave me alone. I went to court to get a restraining order, he was sitting in my living room when I got home from court. He beat me and the police did nothing. He broke into my home and I cut him when he stuck his hand in through the hole that he made in my living room door. The police didn't do anything to him but they did ask him did he want to press charges against me. Stalkers will not leave you alone simply because you ask.

He didn't go to the police or was afraid of her, my dear. He only wanted her away when he was meeting other women, for the rest of the days she still had the key to his condo so she could go there do house chores and walk his dog. He hadn't end the relationship yet when he set a date with miss ohio, she came to his condo but she was still his girlfriend and had the key to get in, this messed up his plans because he had a date with other woman planned ahead, and that's when the conflict started ended up in shooting.

I agree...people need to set clear boundaries...not have sex with the person and then try and dump them hours later...it can make the most normal person feel anger and even rage...both Alexander and Poston told their killers, Alexander said he was going to Cancun with another woman, a Mormon, (after having sex with Jodi) and Poston said he was going on a date with a beautiful woman (after having sex with Hubris). Not blaming the victims.....but not a bright move with these women that have shown their instabilities.

I have to say, the dude who this is about, was so INCREDIBLY vain it was crazy. Obsessed with his looks, and if you look at his photo's, he was so terrified he wouldn't look handsome for a microsecond in photo's, he wouldn't smile, he'd do the only face he's tested in the mirror for thousands of hours so he KNOWS that one is handsome, doin a random smile could make him look randomly goody, so best to pull that same "I'm posin for a photo, but im pretending i'm being cool". You could tell his whole life was about what he looked like, and thats why he treated women like dirt, i mean, you think it's just random luck the next girl he had picked out to date after he was just with a beautiful psycho just happens to be miss universe or whatever? no. he's so into himself he thinks his partner has to be even better lookin than him, but Shayna put him on front street "Crying because your nose is too big and you want to get plastic surgery" hahaha, don't tell a girl you're goin out with A N Y THING deep or important that you're worrued about dude, that sh*t will be on KZbin the day after you break up!
