i think one of the main reasons Shayne is considered the backbone is that you can pair him with any cast member and you'll get a ton of comedic chemistry, he knows exactly how to play off of each member individually and it always makes for funny content

I fully agree! He’s already really funny on his own but he knows exactly how to escalate someone else’s bit or even revive a bit that fell flat. You can just tell that he’s taken special care to build relationships with all of his coworkers and it really shines through :) I think he has a great understanding that the funniest jokes are ones made in good company

I think it's mostly that he's very empathetic, he can read others and see exactly what they want and what they're trying to and he can build them up instead of doing his own thing. Definitely a strong power to have in comedy.

I mean no disrespect to any other cast or crew members but after losing interest in Smosh for the better part of a decade of my life, it was Shayne and his bits on TNTL that got me to check the channel out again and it's honestly him more than anyone, even Ian and Anthony, that I look forward to seeing in new videos. Shayne is definitely the backbone. I know he doesn’t care about it but that man works hard to be funny, and he doesn’t even need to because he’s just naturally funny. It’s easier to find people with similar skills that can produce the shows and do the behind the scene work, but the raw comedic talent that Shayne brings cannot be found so easily. Smosh has been around for so long and no cast member has not come close to Shayne’s talent. Not to say that the rest of the cast aren’t funny, because they’re hilarious and very talented, but you can always see their limitations. Whereas Shayne, that dude was born to make people laugh.

While I love everyone now, crew included; Shayne is the one who got me into Smosh because I found him hilarious. His sense of humor is very Chris Farley (one of my personal favs) for me. He also plays off others very well. He and Angela might be one of my favorite pairings. But what I'm getting from this is that Damien loves Shayne (and of course Shayne loves Damien), which isn't much of a surprise but very cute to see.

I really liked how Angela and Keith took the "Backbone" comment, because I do think that's what his strength is. Being the backbone doesn't mean you are the only one that matters, it just means you provide a much needed support to everyone else that allows them to stand strong as well. I truly believe that every person (or in this case we’ll just say every actor) at smosh plays a vital roll and Shayne being the “Backbone” fits perfectly. I don’t think I can do a full run down and dissect every person individually to show their role at the moment but they all contribute something to smosh and have their purpose. Shayne just so happens to be the backbone because he has chemistry with every single person. He is just very charismatic. I absolutely understand Shayne’s stance that the people behind the scenes are the real backbone, but there’s still something to be said about being able to bounce off whatever energy other cast members throw at him. The ability to roll with whatever bit anyone else has on a channel with a lot of improv or off-the-cuff jokes/commentary makes him the broth of the Smosh soup. You can add a lot of things to the soup, some Keith, some Olivia, a little Angela if you’re feeling crazy, and someone else is definitely cooking the soup and prepping ingredients, but without a solid broth that goes well with anything? The soup just isn’t as good. Shayne is that broth.

The people behind the scenes aren't the backbone at all tbh. Smosh IS the cast members. The cast members are all very modest people so of course they're going to say the crew are the most important people for Smosh. The crew members are probably extremely capable people, and work hard to make sure everything runs smoothly... but like there are a lot of really great people that could do those jobs too (with proper training) You can't replace a single cast member without the audience taking notice. That changes the chemistry of the rest of the cast members too.

A good example was in an RT life video back before they shut down. And it just wasn't nearly as funny, even by people who had done hilarious improv before. And I think part of that comes down to the behind the scenes work.

To counter i think that the members including the crew are also the backbones of smosh. Think about it, there isnt one backbone is there are many. Shayne being the backbone and as funny as he is, is because he plays to the crew and other on screen members. I think the reason we say so is because of the chemistry he has with others and how much we enjoy seeing that in videos. In many ways, Shayne became the backbone of Smosh after Anthony left. Although Ian was still and very much is still around, without Anthony, Ian had to reinvent himself to the fan base. During the defy time, it seems like Shayne became the “older brother” of the crew and helped a lot of them during that time. He is also seems to be a very empathetic person who genuinely cares about others and what goes on in their lives. He has a really EQ (emotional quotient) which is arguably more important than IQ in life.
