Hey, Collette! On the topic of extracurriculars: my parents forced me to play softball until I was a freshman in high school. It really put a strain on my relationship with my father. So, in high school I got to pick what I did! I chose to do speech & theatre (things my parents didn’t know about) and LOVED it! And they also now appreciate it! Guide them to do things and encourage them to keep involved, but let them find their path!

That's definitely normal especially if they're going to school and/or working and saving for an apartment. I left home the summer I turned 24. I went away to college from age 18-22, and graduate school from age 22-24. Got a job in my field (counseling) 5.5 hours away in a different state. 9 years later I'm only 1.5 hours away from my hometown, back in my home state, with a lifetime job. Sometimes it takes bit to find your footing and I'm glad my mom let me stay when I was home for breaks and summer employment (undergrad was 4 hours from home, grad was 2.5 hours away).

I think it’s vital that kids explore. Our youngest tried gymnastics and hated it so we pulled her. Turns out ballet is her thing! The oldest has tried a LOT but it finally clicked with gymnastics. Just let them have fun and try new things!

In terms of being involved with picking extracurriculars, my dad pushed me to play sports and it made me go from loving the sport to _dreading_ practice. I tried to tell him I didn't feel the same passion anymore, but ended up doing it for the rest of my HS years. From personal experience--and raising my two younger brothers--definitely agree with encouraging kiddos to follow _their_ dreams and interests! And being there for them when they decide to change/decide they don't like something as much anymore. Kids are still trying and discovering! It's so wonderful to the kid to be supportive and encouraging.

It's awesome you choose to appreciate and see all parts of such the life-long process of raising your family! Life has so many wonderful tradition transitions. Makes me want to partner and celebrate change as much as I can. My parents were heavily involved in me being curious and trying new things. They wanted me to sample what I wanted to see what I enjoyed and to stick with things for a good amount of time even if I wanted to end them eventually. They never forced me into things and I'm so glad for that. They more walked alongside me in listenin to what I got meaning, interest, and value from. I enjoyed singing but didn't really get into choral or jazz choir more until mid-high school and it taught me SO MUCH about being a BETTER COLLABORATOR in life and doing things well that de-center myself. So much change and problem solving is collaborative.

Colette, I totally agree with you on the whole forcing your children to do things. I grew up with 2 parents who were professional violinists so I was exposed to classical music early on and got a violin stuck under my chin at 2 years of age but didn’t really get serious until around 8-10. I was very talented and my mother wanted me to major in music after high school which I did for a year but I hated it! I ultimately became a Nurse BUT I still play in our professional local symphony which has provided me with a perfect balance in life. I never forced my son but told him you’re going to have music in your life so he chose the trombone and played all through HS and college. I think a lot of it is “nature vs nurture.” Much love to all the Shaytards! ♥️🫶

I think you have a great attitude to your kids' development - let them find their own passions and actively encourage them, but also if you see they have talent tell them and help them build their confidence. My parents only really cared for certain elements of success and I found it/still find it hard to find my passions and develop confidence in myself. Been watching you for well over a decade and both you and Shay's insights have been really helpful. But I would say don't force your kids to do something they don't want to, they may well find their way back into it in later life too.

Coming from the kid herself (Im a senior in hs) Letting me pick my own classes was the best thing my mom did for me, I got to try the things I enjoyed at the time. .But when she did push me to do other things like sing in the coir ironically pushed me out if my comfort zone and now I'm more open and can do things I couldnt do before.

regarding your question: I did A LOT of different extra curriculum activities/ after school activities, but I always ended up quitting and starting something new. My parents never “forced me” or encouraged me to stay at one thing, they just let me quit and start something new. Which led me to never actually stick to something, which I regret now. I wish I had been pushed to stay so I could actually be good at something as an adult 😅

Having raised 3 kids to adulthood, i completely understand how you’re feeling Colette. I always say it has been the hardest part of motherhood for me. I love being a Mom and all the things that come with it. I miss the adventures, the events and most of all just having them close. Having said that, currently the only one of the 3 who isn’t with us is our youngest son and he’s out there doing some amazing things. Our oldest son moved back in with us due to needing some time to figure things out and our daughter is on the spectrum although very high functioning but does need us for support. I often do feel sad though when I think back to their younger days. Sigh. I have to remind myself that I can be proud for raising such kind and honest young people. You can definitely be proud for that too. Also, I learned very early on that there’s zero point in trying to force kids to do activities that they have no interest in because it just causes anxiety and resentment. I think Brock may change his mind about singing as he gets older. I’d love to hear Emmi sing again. She has a beautiful voice ❤

I always say the best thing my mom gifted me with was the freedom to be me. She never forced myself or my 6 sisters to do things we didn’t want to do. She also was bendable with discussion when she said no and you presented her with a good argument for wanting your yes. May not have been the day she said no, but she at least thought about what you presented for your request of a yes and if it was reasonable she would change her no to a yes. This worked both ways, sometimes no stayed no and I knew and understood why.

i tried lots of different extracurricular activities growing up but as soon as i didn’t like something my parents pulled me out and i never ended up sticking with anything or learning to be comfortable with not liking everything about that activity. now that i’m older i look back and wish my parents made me stay in something because i would love to know how to dance or play piano etc. but once they get older and they decide if they want to do something they didn’t keep up as a kid it’s never too late! it just might not be the same as if they started when they were little.

I think we are living in a world where opportunities to learn in a structured way, doesn't stop after the school years. If he doesn't want to do choir now, whether that's because he has more motivation for other things, there's a teacher he isn't fond of, or any other reason. It's important to remember it doesn't mean that will be his only opportunity 🙌🏻 It's 100% better to not add any pressures, or negativity! You've done amazing with all your kids, they all seem to have such strong drives for what they want, and that in itself will benefit them when they go out to try and achieve their goals. Always share your own passions with them, and give them something to think about. But ultimately cheer them on with whichever paths they choose to take. Let their mistakes and achievements, guide them. I've only just found that confidence in my late twenties, I had a lot of pressures during my school years, I always went with my gut, but was put down for those choices. Quite a few sessions of therapy and mental health struggles later, and Ive finally got that confidence, to pair with the drive I always had.

Crazy helicopter parenting can be a problem when a kid's trying to get into something or decide what to do. BUT encouraging and sharing insight into things you know is usually greatly appreciated. Heck, I'm 35, have been playing with things like graphic design and digital art for years...but I still ask my graphic designer mom for tips and tricks.

100% let them pick. Encourage and support their natural skills, but their interest is way more important. On the other hand, if they’ve chosen an activity, but decide they don’t like it after a few practices, I believe in “forcing” them to finish out the season as to not let down a team, teach perseverance, and commitment, etc. unless there is a major problem/reason that overpowers. you’re a fantastic mom. You’ve always supported and encouraged all of their interests from what I have seen, even with the smallest of things❤️

Just discuss why they are not interested and get a feel for their commitment because if they are not committed then they won’t be learning or enjoying it. Let’s face it singing in a choir is not mandatory to enjoying singing. I didn’t do choir as a child but joined choir as an adult and thoroughly enjoy the experience. I did art classes and became an artist sooooo don’t be too worried they are all different and appreciate that you have a potential robotic scientist who may sing in an adult choir 🤓

when i was in middle school all the way til i graduated high school i was in choir and in high school i was in show choir singing and dancing i had so much fun just something that i wanted to do i met a lot of good friends i still talk to now i have fun memories and pictures of my time being there and then i have them on my facebook as well as my high school choir teacher great times but my mom wanted me to dance when i was little or join clubs and stuff i did not want to til middle school and high school i had like the best time she just let us pick whatever we were interested in. hope that brook does what makes him happy as well as the rest of the children. Time does go by fast i cant believe my cousin son is already going to be five and going to school soon we are so happy for him time needs to slow down and my other cousin son he is in high school now wow time flies one day they are born now they are almost out of high school learning to drive wow

My Mom made me do baseball until 9th grade. Yeah I have mixed feelings cause I never wanted to go but if I didn’t I would have spent every Summer playing video games all day. So for my kids I’m not sure, I’d want them to do something but it wouldn’t have to be a sport if they didn’t want to. I did acting and did enjoy that but getting outdoors is important too. It’s tricky.

When my kids were little in school. I’m now 45, they are 25 and 21. I pushed them into volleyball, softball and basketball. My oldest was too heavy for the cheerleading and dance. Even though she could do it we were told it’s her weight. So that prompted me to push more towards sporty sports to lose weight and get exercise. My youngest was a normal weight but wasn’t interested in the dance and cheerleading stuff. Any who I finally let my oldest do whatever her junior year and she found bowling and loved it. My youngest junior year did nothing and that’s ok. I wish looking back I would have let them be more selective for their selves on their own path. It’s their journey not mine. I should have just given my opinion and let them decide. It’s my biggest regret.
