For me I finished yellow BEFORE actually playing the actual undertale, meaning I didn’t actually know about how things were going to go, I thought this was a spinoff/au of UT and that everything was going to be okay. I think it made the ending a lot better though, really made me love clover and this game more. I did cry after the ending though.

now that easy mode exists, the only issue i have with undertale yellow is you don't get to do a route where you do everything flowey wants. a genocide route up until steamworks where you just run through instead of hunting down every robot gives you the neutral ending with some extra dialogue about clover acting especially terrible in that run, but i would love to see what would happen if clover just completely fell for flowey's trick to get the 5 souls + clover's soul for a 6th one.

Personally feel this puts us too overlapping with Undertale's narrative. I think that some aspects of what Flowey wants do align with justice, however there will always be a few details that make Flowey's journey destined to be forged by Determination rather than Justice.

I do really wish there was a proper Asgore ending. People say that it either would've been too similar to Undertale, or Asgore would've simply defeated Clover like he did in flawed pacifist. But I think there is a way that a mega Asgore fight could've worked for a fifth ending. Although Flowey would get the souls, making Undertale impossible from the events of Undertale Yellow, perhaps they could've added dialogue with Flowey being bored from having absolute power, and instead he gives Clover a chance to do something different. Idk, maybe It wouldn't have worked now that I think about it lol.

I think the most impressive thing about Undertale Yellow is the fact that it exists at all. I've given up on many projects after they've taken too many months for me to see through, that have been much, much smaller than a full game with three different routes, formed by the collaboration of dozens of artists, programmers, writers, and designers. There's a reason why so many fangames never get finished, and it isn't because of laziness or incompetence. It's because it's really, _really_ hard.

I think the thing that made Undertale Yellow shine for me was forsaking the meta narrative and instead tackling it from another angle: The tragedy and aftermath of the Human/Monster War. You always got small bits of dialogue talking about it from various characters like Gerson in the original, and Asgore’s regret of his decision to kill 7 humans to get revenge, but I think Yellow dives deep into what exactly that means for monsterkind, particularly the crushing despair and depression of monsters that was balanced out by the hope that they’re only one Soul away from freedom. In Yellow, even subtracting a single Soul from the equation makes their situation that much more out of reach and crushing, I feel, and Chujin’s dogged chase to free monsterkind, despite his lack of talent and screwups, is the worst consequence of that chase. His death and Kanako’s falling down get to the core of why Ceroba is both horribly depressed when you arrive, and why she is so dogged in claiming Clover’s Soul in Pacifist, with the promise of making all of monsterkind’s pain and sorrow worth it. In her mind, Chujin and Kanako’s fate is what will happen to everyone trapped behind the barrier if they don’t do something, and Clover’s purity wakes her up again after so long of burying herself in sorrow. All of this, I feel, is what makes Clover’s sacrifice in True Pacifist hit as hard as it does too. A kid who takes Justice into their own hands, coming themselves from an implied tragic background with their comments scattered through the game and strong attachment to motherly figures like Toriel and Ceroba. Through their journey, they learn and come to understand the suffering monsters have endured, and they make the choice to give their life to give them that bit of hope they need to endure until they are free. This whole theme in my mind was what made Undertale Yellow hit as hard as it did for me, and the fact a great game that more or less rivals the original in quality is a tremendous bonus.

the thing is, while i agree, Yellow doesn't entirely forsake metatext. there is one element, whether intentional or not, where it comes through. unsurprisingly, it's flowey. Think of it this way: Flowey is responsible for UTY existing. after witnessing the same outcomes over and over and over, Flowey settled on drastically altering Clover's path through the Underground to grant him a shot at the ending he wanted, and then actively guide them through it as the unlikely duo meets an entirely unique cast of wacky personalities. Flowey has, effectively, made a fangame of Undertale.

as someone who enjoys both TS!Underswap and Undertale Yellow, I find it hard to rank one over another, TS!Underswap did genocide route (or rather ruthless route) better than Undertale Yellow did imo, with one fight in particular being done extremely well. Compared to Undertale: Monster Kid's "fight" was not as well executed as Larry & Harry in the ruthless route, it's shocking at first but Undyne takes the hit and you aren't left to reflect on your actions. Compared to Undertale Yellow: Undertale Yellow's closest analog would be Starlo's dual in the genocide/vengeance route, it has the same issue as Undertale where you're immediately struck with a difficult fight and don't have time to reflect on your actions. Compared to Deltatraveler: The obliteration route doesn't really have something like this, Ness & Paula is the closest analog so far, but to be fair, Deltatraveler isn't even halfway complete yet Compared to PS!Outertale: I haven't seen PS!Outertale, so feel free to correct me with updated information Compared to Deltarune: Berdly's fight in the snowgrave route is executed very well, the unsettling music, the fact it's the only time in Deltarune so far that a character in the light world is implied to have died (on-screen at least), and there is plenty of time before the Spamton NEO fight to reflect on what you did. I still think that the Larry & Harry fight in the ruthless route is better, though. Sorry for the tangent, I just wanted to praise TS!Underswap on a thing they did even better than Undertale Yellow or Deltarune.

Great intro! Undertale Yellow is one of the best fangames to come out of Undertale. It blew me away at how well made it was, and the true pacifist ending cutscene made me sob like a baby. It effected me so much that I don't think I'll ever play it again, but dare I say that I hold it almost on par with Undertale. I have the same issues with it as Shayy does, but honestly the music alone is worth playing it. I still listen to the soundtrack, and have it added to most of my Playlist.

I think my main gripe with UTY is that your Acts in boss fights don't do anything. They essentially function as extra Spare buttons in allowing you to skip your turn, when they could easily have effects. To use Axis as an example, I feel that the acts could offer a fun risk/reward tradeoff. Scrutinize would make the attacks harder but fill the Tick'O'Meter faster, while Compliment would do the inverse. Brace could increase the size of your shield but slow your soul, while Cool would up your speed but shrink your shield. Almost all of Undertale's boss fights (with Sans, Toriel and Papyrus being the main exceptions) have Acts that affect the fight. Napstablook and the Dogs are only sparable through Acting, Undyne can be made easier or harder through Pleading or Challenging, Mettaton Neo's Acts all have ways of boosting his ratings. idk, I just think this is a huge miss in terms of an Undertale fangame. Not enough to ruin the game in my eyes, but definitely an area where it could be made much better

Undertale yellow is genuinely a phenomenal game that could genuinely come off as "toby fox created". And while its still an amazing fangame with a ton of heart and soul put into it, a lot of people in the no hitting community were displeased by the game's lack of balance and such creating a negative stigma around the game in said community to some degree. But I feel as though despite the definite flaws, I can't help but appreciate how much time this must've taken. 7 years is crazy. Finally glad someone made a constructive and fair review about the game. Looking forward to more.

Unfortunately a lot of the harsh day 1 criticisms from no-hitters were just... incorrect. As the dust has settled now the amount of problematic attacks is objectively *far* less then what was initially thought. There's definitely a handful that could be made better, like I said, I think there's two attacks in Zenith for example that aren't consistent & feel unfair as a result, but that's just 2 attacks out of like 20+ in that fight alone which is pretty damn impressive. Considering base Undertale has stuff like Astigmatism & Whimsalot running around with attacks that can straight up put you in unwinnable positions (Flowey and Asriel do this too but it's kind of the point in those fights), I think Yellow did just about as good of a job overall tbh

 @ShayyTV I would not be so confident in that. Zenith Martlet in particular requires two additional player-handled mechanics of dashing and shooting (With several levels of charge) to be managed in addition to dodging bullets, requiring more mental energy to deal with compared to bosses in the games I mentioned. There are also many developers on the team that have tried and failed to beat that fight, yet alone Ceroba who is also quite a tough customer herself. Warm-up type attacks also appear to be absent, so it makes it much harder to ease a player into the fights. It is likely that relying on playtesters who were incredibly skilled resulted in them making the fights with those kinds of people in mind. I don't find the attacks that track the player to be fun to deal with in particular. Ceroba's stun-lock crystals and lasers appear so suddenly in a way that it is difficult to react, and Martlet's claw attack is not much better as there is a lot more going on in that fight on top of that. The attacks are not much better when brought into a casual player lens either, As I found the fights of Undertale Yellow in Genocide with optimal equipment to be significantly more difficult than fights in Undertale and PS!Outertale with the lowest LV and weakest Equipment possible. A challenge I engaged with in playtesting of the latter to make sure the fights were fair on the player, and because I had just that much fun with the fights. I mention Genocide with Yellow specifically because of UTY's extreme damage formula difference from Undertale. In Yellow, every point of DEF is counted to damage reduction rather than Undertale adding damage reduction for every 5 points starting from 3, and it's extra player damage based on current HP mechanic which helps balance higher LV playthrough. Neutral runs are most vulnerable to this formula, as a Boss like Axis for example is capable of dealing as much as 12 damage which would 2-shot the lowest LV a player can be in that fight (Which is the same number as Undyne the Undying's strongest bullets.) but is also capable of dealing 1 damage (Which can also happen to a LV 1 player, though is much easier to achieve at higher LVs). Essentially, the highest possible damage reduction in Undertale is 5 with the Temmie Armor equipped from LV 13 onwards. Whereas in Undertale Yellow, this number can be surpassed before you leave Snowdin, and goes up to 16 points of damage reduction with the Golden Bandana and an LV higher than 16. This results in damage numbers having to be increased to compensate for this mistake that was unknowingly made, and creating a larger dependency on having equipment with high stats. I don't think this kind of balance was intentional either, given that MysteryRacer said their goal was to make the engine as accurate as possible on the El Bailador Preview Video.

@@zaxentothegreedy7816 Most of what you brought up here was stuff I already brought up in the review, including a large dedicated segment about the defense stat and why I felt it was a problem. I stand by what I said. I do agree with the Ceroba tracking attacks - they're the only 2 attacks in that fight I dislike, but because it was only 2 attacks (and they always happen at the exact same time) I didn't bring it up because I don't think it was enough of a critical issue. The harsh criticism of which I'm referring to were various angry comments saying stuff along the lines of "almost every attack in this game sucks" "nobody playtested this" "this design is horrible" among other things, usually insulting the developers. There's still plenty to fairly criticize, this game has a handful of attacks as I said that I think are flawed. It's not perfect but IMO it is not deserving of such harsh words, especially when many of those harsh words ended up just not really being correct or justified criticisms (some of them still are, though).

In a sense, I'm pretty sure ALL routes of UTY are canon in a sense with how they tie into Undertale.. even Genocide! Neutral and Geno can be considered canon for the same reason: they never happened. Flowey resets in Neutral.. and the only way you're going to get the true ending of UTY with the Pacifist route is if you reset after a Geno.. implying that Clover resets as well. And then there's Pacifist which is pretty self-explanatory with how it ties in. But of course, the main theme with Yellow is the very SOUL trait it embodies.. Justice. With Pacifist, you're giving Justice to the Monsters in pushing them one step closer to freedom. In Genocide, you're giving Justice to the Fallen Humans in ensuring that they are finally laid to rest. No matter the route, Justice will be served.

@26:00 I feel like a lot of gamers don't realize just how hard the 90s conditioned us to fear 'easy mode.' A lot of games would refuse to give you the 'good' ending if you used it, and when they weren't doing that, they were making the game sluggishly boring, removing all challenge from the experience. That's why a lot of games now-a-days make 'normal mode' the 'easy' mode, and set it to be the default, and then they add a 'hard' mode. OR they call easy mode something else. "Casual mode," "relaxed mode," "explorer mode," etc, to evade that gut reaction. Also, I am 100% one of those jerks who would have complained about all the little breaks from cannon if I had played Undertale Yellow, which is why I never played it. lol. I know this about myself, and don't wanna bring people down maaaaan. The thing about being a fangame is, you're riding off the pre-existing fandom of a game you did not create, which means you get those fans for free, but in doing so, you are shackled to the expectations set by the franchise you are making a fan-work of. So if you deviate from that expectation, there will be a price to pay in backlash. Where as an original game lacks that expectation, but also doesn't come with a pre-existing audience to import into the franchise, so you gotta spend a buncha energy advertising, so people will actually take a chance, and try your game. Content creation is hard. I doubt I could ever bear the burden of developing a game.

agree on the first part, which is why I made a note to mention there's no penalty. I fucking HATED that trend of easy mode locking you out of shit or insulting you for using it. it's mostly faded now, the only thing i can think of is Sonic Frontiers randomly having the final boss locked to hard difficulty which was very dumb but at least you can change that at any time lol

I love Undertale Yellow. I love it a lot! I love it's characters, music, story.... I love that it does its own thing instead of just rehashing the characters! ...buuuut there is one thing that makes the story just a bit tougher to like, one detail that makes it so it doesn't engage with me quite as well as others... Chujin is COMICALLY incompetent. And Ceroba's complete refusal to recognize that is equally comical. He basically got a 'You Tried' award at the Steamworks. He thought he had a working robot and was so confident he went to show Asgore- and it broke down within seconds and set his garden on fire. Axis is an absolute MESS, a poorly programmed nightmare that murdered a child and is now malfunctioning BADLY. He was totally confident he found a way to make boss monster SOULs persist- and he made himself fall down and DIE because of it. And then Ceroba follows in her husband's footsteps- performing a dangerous, untested experiment on her own child. People give Alphys a lot of shit for her dangerous, untested experiments- but at least she got clearance from Asgore first. At least she got consent from the families. At least she was conducting them on people who were comatose and on death's door anyway, meaning that there was no possible way to make things worse. 'Oh but Kanako volunteered' she is a CHILD, you do not let her volunteer for this. And after witnessing all of this, hearing the recording of Asgore rejecting Chujin's work... her takeaway is that ASGORE was wrong to fire him, because Chujin was SO close to completing Axis, his masterpiece! ....The masterpiece that is currently hunting you and Clover down to murder you. The masterpiece that HAS MURDERED BEFORE, AND YOU **KNOW** IT! You WATCHED Chujin's tape, you FOUND this one that showed just how bad of a failure he was, how horrifically he screwed up, and instead of reckoning with that, you buried it behind his grave, so nothing would interfere with your image of Chujin as the perfect, brilliant, misunderstood genius who never did any wrong!!! That is an IMPRESSIVE amount of cognitive dissonance and denial. And how's it all resolve? ...By standing aside and insisting, once again, to respect a child's decision to volunteer to die. Now, it doesn't bother me all that much. But i have a friend who had the ending COMPLETELY ruined for them because of how uncomfortable they were with every adult around choosing to step aside and let a child commit suicide. And while I get what the writers were going for.... yeah, they have a point, it's a *little* weird. ...Anyway uh, yeah. Great game! Love listening to the soundtrack, been meaning to replay it. But man, I just needed to get that off my chest. To end things on a positive note, I'll say that one thing I do love is how lovable they made Martlet. She is INCREDIBLY endearing, so much so that her being the one single person who can turn Clover away from a path of violence is totally believable. You, the player, do not get a choice, if you are on anything less than a full genocide route, then CLOVER decides to stop fighting and go live with her. Even on genocide, it explicitly mentions that Clover is struggling to find a reason to kill her. Martlet is just... so, so good. Best character in the whole game by a massive margin.

I was willing to accept all of her smiling for chujin as a character flaw, but I couldn’t stand seeing her just let the same thing happen again. She learned nothing! @@harmlessspider3693 Right? And it's just so weird, like... Ceroba: Please kill me. I have no future here in the Underground. I want to die. Clover: No, I will not do this. You still have more to live for, even in spite of your mistakes. Then, literally five minutes later... Clover: Please take my SOUL. I have no future here in the Underground. I want to die. Ceroba: WELP, it's their choice, guys, we should respect that! Now gimme that SOUL, kiddo. Like, seriously??? Just going to have that happen back to back like that? Like, I get it, the nature of the story inherently means that Clover HAS to die, and the only way to approach a 'good' ending is to have them go out on their own terms- but I REALLY feel like there were better ways to handle it than having every good, responsible adult standing aside and letting them kill themselves.

I remember that my biggest complaint with the difficulty in yellow was only with the final bosses: Once you start any of those fights, you become completely unable to backtrack if you realize that you need that armor upgrade. Just being given the ability to backtrack to the final shop on true pacifist would have been all I needed, but I had saved, and as such I was stuck with a FAR harder version of ceroba than intended, with no way to fix it.
@ShayyTV
@ShayyTV 22 күн бұрын
Yeah, that's true. This could be fixed by letting you ride the elevator back down to the UG Apartments - the Delta Rune patch (which had its price cut in half in 1.1 lol) is the 2nd best armor in the game. Neutral doesn't interact with armor and Geno lets you steal it, so those are fine.

My only wish for the final Geno fight is that they better explained how the dash dodge mechanic worked. Up until I realized that the longer you hold the button, the longer your dash (and your invulnerability were), I was worried it was going to take much longer to beat. Once we figured out how the dash truly worked, the fight got especially easier. I blame Hollow Knight for making me think it was a set duration haha. Fantastic review, loved hearing your thoughts on it, especially as such a veteran in the Undertale community. Thanks for being such a consistently active and positive voice in the community.

Undertale Yellow recently got an "Upgrade Mod" called "UT Yellow: Shades-of-justice" that enhances some of the Dialogues with a few Characters. For Example Dalv is following you as a Companion through Snowdin, giving him a lot more Screentime which I really love! There's also an Undertale Red and Yellow-Mod in the works that adds Clover as another Soul on Frisks Journey alongside Chara! They're currently working on making a Speak Button for both of them! Undertale Yellow is an amazing Game. It really felt like playing Undertale all over again but giving it it's own Personality. I loved the Charakters and that the Game didn't shy away from using a fully new Cast of Characters and Set-Pieces.

I feel like the pacifist ending is slightly flawed in that Clover's sacrifice feels like a bit of a 180 from everything they did so far (especially since the stakes of the Ceroba fight were just "fighting for your life"). Flowey accepting that decision also feels out of character. It felt like they had to do a last minute swerve to get back in line with canon. But that's literally my only problem with any part of the game's plot.

I can see the first part being kind of a sudden shift, I get that, I disagree with the Flowey thing though - the implication is that Flowey has seen the other outcomes (Neutral) already in addition to all the outcomes he attempted to manufacture and him just quitting and moving on is pretty in line with how he viewed the UT cast. "I've exhausted this set of numbers, time to move on to the next". The only time he starts questioning this in UT is when he loses control over Save/Load so it's pretty in line I think.

@@ShayyTV I guess. But the way it was framed (he says Clover deserves their rest and I think he calls them a friend or buddy) makes it sound like he respects Clover's decision, and that was part of why he let it stick. Which... considering he blames himself and his pacifism for getting himself and Chara killed, I would expect that sacrifice to fill him with rage more than anything else.

@@davidbrickey8733 Honestly to me, I don't think Flowey is being remotely sincere with calling Clover a friend here. Especially because he starts off his speech with, "So, this is it? All that work just to become another cog in the machine? Heh, you've grown so predictable!" Which implies to me that he's mocking Clover for their decision. He only lets it go, because he figures that their will be another human anyway considering that Asgore now only has one soul left to collect. And at the end of the other routes, he shows his true feelings towards Clover. He never actually cared for them to begin with, he was only using them for his own gain. The fact that they were failing to do what he wanted at the end of both the Neutral and Genocide routes ends up infuriating him, causing him to lash out severely in each of the respective routes. He only puts on a forced smile, a friendly persona to make his subject feel comfortable and more at ease. Nothing more, nothing less.

I did agree with most of what you said, but one thing I felt was how geno in UTY probably hit me a bit harder as in UT for the sole reason that you mention: you really get to see how much it negatively effects the main character. It’s sort of the same thing that TS!Underswap does with Chara, and even Deltatraveler with its take on Kris. I think UT might work better at making you feel personally responsible for everything but I think it just hurts me more personally to see these characters that I’ve grown to like suffer like this. It makes me genuinely feel horrible for doing it because of how I know that it’s all because of me wanting to see what happens (and in a morbid way) to experience that sort of guilt. I also think UTY being the only “good” ending for Clover works in a way that’s really tragic. Because it shows that the only way for them to live is by literally defying their fate, and to do that is to leave tons of death in their wake. And when you think of the fucked up implications of how the underground could end up being in this route, it’s hard not to see feel bad about it.

Bringing up the difficulty actually changed my understanding of its balancing. I definitely felt the game was quite the bit more challenging than Undertale's fights, but did not expect the Genocide fights to be that insane! Until I realized I basically played UTY on hardmode, with complete lack of regard for proper healing and defense items. The Genocide fights are just quite chaotic and hard to follow almost, and because I played pre-patch Zenith Martlet, what little healing items I did have had to be saved for her second phase. I still ended up perservering (I still feel is one of my cooler accomplishments), and since then always thought that she was harder than Sans by a long shot. While I still believe she's harder, you've made some excellent points in why the fight and the game as a whole is actually more balanced than people expect.

Long rant below cause this is my review of UTY and also a response to ur vid :P. I did enjoy UT and UTY but in retrospect the deeper u dig the more flaws there are. UTY's hard attacks also generally ruins quality of life play even for a normal player especially in zenith martlet. I didn't feel like I was learning and memorizing the attacks for zenith martlet phase 2, it felt like I was damage boosting through it and just cheesing attacks rather than learning it, even sometimes in phase 1. Aside from a few attacks the whole vibe of the fight feels like tanking attacks rather than just actually learning patterns. The heal act in phase 2 also solidifies that, when that patch to add the heal act came out it signified to me that there wasn't a real move to adjust the balancing but rather to put a band aid on it. Ig the whole tank and heal adds to the desperate nature of the the situation so thumbs up for that, Also while this wasn't every explicity stated I do feel like some ppl use the 'it's just a fangame!" defense when criticism of UTY is brought up. I can both recognize that UTY is a well made passion project but also misses the mark on some things it tries to accomplish, both of those statements can exist in a similar spectrum. saying that attacks are unbalanced or that UTY's writing isn't as impactful CAN BE because it's a fangame, but those criticisms don't automatically devalue UTY"s and the work put into it. also uty got big so expect ppl to not instant love it lol You say that ppl who dont like the characters dont enjoy this game simply off of them not connecting with them, but ur wrong, the game makes it hard to even like the characters in the first due to the distribution of screentime and the nature of their backstories While I did enjoy UTY, the writing for characters other than Ceroba, Axis, flowey, and maybe Integrity suffer. Dalv genuinely has an interesting backstory but it's never really touched upon and he's just gone after like 20 minutes of gameplay until the very end which u say. actually crazy how the one snowdin incident animation does more to characterize dalv than anything UTY ever did A lot of martlet's characterizations feels very contrived and a weird amalgation of like a bunch of Undertale characters. She's a royal guard, a lab assistant to alphys, worked with Chujin and during the genocide fight it's revealed she incredibly distrustful of humans but like we never see this during the entirely of pacifist/neutral except at the very end. + She's also gone for like half the game since she's introduced and just randomly reappears at the very end to like contribute very little since the main spectacle is either ceroba or flowey or just her boss battle more than her personality Starlo isn't as bad, he actually has a pretty component story arc and everything, he's just kinda there. It's kinda weird how his character does like a complete 180 from being comedic relief gone wrong to the voice reason after one ceroba lecture. It more feels like starlo drags down ceroba into medocrity in neutral which feels very sad ngl, which is a very sad realization of his character is to the detriment of ceroba Ceroba just eats up everyone's screen time and it hurts. She has 2 boss fights 😭, a whole area dedicated to her story, and basically a whole true lab sequence. And the worst part is her backstory feels like it's entirely her fault, so it's really hard to sympathize with her. The grief aspect of her character is very cool tho it's nice to have that. Would be nice to show how ceroba interacts with other characters other than starlo to kinda cement her asriel like importance in the story. A genocide starlo fight would be wayyyyy better in characterizing him then just, ceroba is big mad undyne 2.0 Flowey is perfect 10/10 he'll never change. Neutral flowey is amazing. Integrity's backstory is genuinely so unique and I want a fully fleshed out backstory. Axis is just there, no deep thoughts, he serves as a really interesting plot device. Clover as a character is very interesting too, I like that yellow never tried to lean too much into meta narrative and was more about clover's journey. However, I feel like Clover could've had more of a personality on pacifist that involved him questioning his journey. A lot of clover's small characterizations in genocide rlly made him unique, but we receive none of this in pacifist. Clover just suddenly decides it's okay to go and die alone, which is super sad TLDR: Ceroba eats up like 90% of screentime and shades of justice fixes these issues

I wish there were more stuffs about Chujin itself because such an interesting character despite his lack of screen time. Probably one of the characters that made the biggest impression on me, not only because of his personality but because of the insane impact he has undirectly on everything. I really love Axis too. His humor can't resonate with everyone but when it does, it's absolutely perfect (Same with Starlo to a lesser degree). I think that his character development is rather interesting. Maybe it's just me but I feel like his personality is one of the most consistent in the whole cast when compared to Martlet for example. Ceroba is really stupid but I think that he has enough personality that I actually care for her in the Steamworks. I agree with you for mostly everything. Flowey's fight is probably the best out of the whole game. He however feels way too inactive the rest of the time despite actively interacting with you all the time and way less childish than he used to be in Undertale. It makes sense in the way they choose to tell the story but I feel that he could have shined way more if given the chance. I'm not saying that he was badly written, just that the flaws of the actual story made it really difficult not feel like Starlo most of the time.

i agree with this comment 100%. when the game first released i wasn't invested in the character writing at all (in fact, the game got boring really fast for me because of it), and my biggest issue was ceroba's backstory with how she killed her child- it just made her feel extremely incompetent, especially in comparison to how the rest of her character was set up to be. it also bothered me that these flashbacks were given to us so late; to me it felt like a cheap and easy way to make the player sympathize with ceroba... i think the game is good despite that, though (i love flowey's depiction in it)

I feel like Sans gives a more distinct feeling of progress as you get better at his fight. As you said one or two big mistakes is death. So just getting one attack farther feels like a huge improvement. Meanwhile Yellow’s most challenging boss fights are real slugfests where you can tank a lot of hits. Personally I abused the cactus glitch to get through these boss fights the first time as I was on a limited trial of a windows emulator because it was really hard to tell how much better I was getting with each death. I definitely think which fights are harder varies a bit from person to person as they don’t test the exact same skills.

I really loved my time with Undertale Yellow overall, but my actual biggest criticism is of the characters, less of their writing but more of their design. Undertale is no stranger to cute an immediately appealing character designs among normal NPCs, but something interesting is that the entire "core" cast of characters are... well, funny looking. With the exception of Toriel (though most fan art does seem to forget that she has a very flat and boxy body shape), all of the characters you spend significant time with in Undertale exemplify the kinds of things that come to mind with the classical definition of "monster." Sans and Papyrus are goofy skeletons, Undyne is a gangly fish lady, and Alphys is an awkward, perpetually hunched dinosaur. They can all be cute, but their character designs require you to warm up to them as characters first. Meanwhile, Yellow's core cast is mostly... normal furries. Very well-designed and visually dynamic furries, but they are immediately appealing absent any characterization. (Dalv falls outside of this problem, but that's because he feels even more out of place, like an Adventure Time character wandered into the wrong setting.) This is less a weakness of Yellow's art and more a strength of Undertale's art that Yellow lacks, if that makes sense? Undertale presents you with strange creatures that need to work to overcome their appearances, while Yellow's cast all scream "main character" from the word go, especially Ceroba.It's a minor nitpick in the end, but it's something that was pretty constantly on my mind for the back half of the game, so I think it's worth discussing.

I wouldn't say the UTY attacks are unfair per se, but their telegraphing and visual clarity is awful. Tons of area attacks come out less than a second after a warning and zenith martlet especially throws insane attacks at you you have no way of practicing and without a clear way to dodge them (especially with autodire disabled)

Talk about timing; I was just listening to Yellow's soundtrack this morning. Maybe I SHOULD replay it. I had basically no expectations for Yellow (hadn't been following it before it suddenly released), and I was absolutely blown away in all aspects. It's probably my favorite fangame ever, so I'm very glad to see love for it.

I think my biggest complaint about Yellow is the disparity of quality between its and UT's overworld sprites, the one scene that puts Ceroba and Alphys next to each other is jarring lol But that complaint is so small, so obviously goated game 💛

Amazing and accurate review, I waited a year to play Undertale Yellow 'cause I was saving it for a special occasion, and I was kinda pessimistic about it going on because of the differences it has from my personal view of the game's lore with Flowey and how humans control Determination, but after playing it I was really blown away by how wrong all the critique I heard about it felt. Very amazing game even when I admittedly went in skeptical and this review really captures how I felt after playing it. ^u^

I love the Neutral Flowey fight so much! In Undertale Flowey was interesting, sure, but he just wasn't around enough to really catch my attention. My favorite characters from the original game were the skeleton brothers. All that time spent getting to know them through Sans's pranks and Papyrus's phone calls got me really attached, and the parallels between the skelebros and me and my sister made them super relatable. However, Undertale Yellow allows us an opportunity to spend a lot of time with Flowey and see more of his character. The sassiness sprinkled in with his friendly persona, the way he verbally dances around his trauma, the silly ways he tries to connect with Clover in order to gain their trust. And of course the endings do a lot as well. Pacifist gives a hint, showing how even an uncaring soulless time-looping dead flower can give a dying child a bit of comfort, as he affectionately refers to Clover as his friend. Vengeance gives us a bit more, showing a darker side to Flowey as Clover starts disobeying him, culminating in a chilling moment where Flowey realizes that he's trapped and going to die, so he chooses to use his last moments in order to inflict as much emotional damage to Clover as he can before they obliterate him. Neutral offers the most, showing Flowey snap as his carefully-laid plans are ruined in an instant, giving us access to his mind. We see the hints of self-hatred in his phase 1 attacks, an understanding of how he came to be the person he is now, and in phase 2 we see his creativity in the different ways he presents himself. All in all, this makes Flowey my favorite character in Undertale Yellow. (My second favorite is Starlo and my third is Mo.)

I really enjoy Undertale Yellow, but one criticism I never really see brought up is with its check text, battle narration, and battle dialogue. In Undertale, these often give you information about what works to spare an enemy but that element is missing in Yellow. It's not a big thing, but I think it did make some encounters a bit more tedious or confusing
@ShayyTV
@ShayyTV 24 күн бұрын
Undertale isn't super consistent about this either and it's a criticism I have of both games - this will be something I go into more depth on when I get around to making the dedicated Undertale video. There's a lot of instances in both games where it's just "keep trying every act until something works" which looks a bit bland in comparison to things like checking Snowdrake to make him do a pun only to react to it to spare them, etc. In hindsight, something I probably should have brought up here though is that the act button is basically not used at all in boss fights, where in UT this was only really the case with Toriel. Papyrus, Undyne, Mettaton and Asgore all had stuff you could do with acting, even in Neutral. I didn't really mind this at all during my playthroughs though.
@Raven-2000
@Raven-2000 24 күн бұрын
@@ShayyTV I believe that ACTing doing basically nothing during the Toriel fight is intentional. Through all of Ruins you're taught that you have to ACT to spare enemies, but Toriel completely goes against that. When the player learns she can't be talked down, they'll start attacking her since other monsters have said that some enemies can be spared if their HP is low. This, of course, leads the player into accidentally killing her, which is a very emotional moment in your first playthrough.

@@ShayyTV Honestly it feels pretty consistent to me in Undertale except maybe for maybe some of the Core enemies or bosses? I just looked through the text for the normal encounters and they pretty much all tell you something you can use to figure out what act to use and/or give you feedback on acts you try-though maybe I'm missing something! Are there ones that stick out to you as being "keep trying every act until something works"?

@@CaerwynHeart Core & Hotland enemies, Glyde, Temmie sticks out but that's kind of a gag encounter, and Greater Dog in some capacity because the flavor text isn't the most clear until a certain point into the fight It's mostly good across the board though, but there's definitely some enemies where it's way more pronounced like Snowdrake for instance, so it makes the others look a little simple by comparison That's of course like a gigantic nitpick LOL on the whole I do think UTY uses act less than UT but it didn't really bother me at all personally

One problem for me is that I didn't really like martlet. Not saying the game is bad though, you can just not like a character sometimes like Alphys in Undertale. But through the game, I felt forced to 'like' her, and I didn't enjoy the second part of the dunes where she joins Clover in the oasis. It's not too big of a complaint since the game has enough content elsewhere to really have fun. But in the end of the neutral route i was thinking 'hey flowey i dont want to be adopted by some weird bird lets go and kill asgore' and Flowey actually came and went stabby stabby which was quite interesting Also i played a second run of the neutral route to find out if i can actually kill Asgore, it ended up feeling really underwelming that the only thing stopping flowey's plans of getting the souls was some guy in the elevator
@ShayyTV
@ShayyTV 22 күн бұрын
I imagine this is probably similar to what people who did not like Papyrus or Alphys felt like. I don't think there's very much that can be done about this - the nature of these games is that they absolutely hinge on the cast of characters. If you don't like them, the game won't work nearly as well because it's so character driven. I think that's less a specific UTY flaw and more just a symptom of the medium, since this applies to UTDR and all of the other fangames too.

@@ShayyTV With Papyrus and Alphys, you had the choice not to befriend them. You could spare them, but that didn't mean you needed to be friends. I like how Undertale had that nuance, which is absent in Undertale Yellow, where it skips that aspect altogether. I think it makes sense with what Monochrome is saying here. It would feel more significant if you had to put in effort in having that relationship happen, rather than having it pushed onto you. It creates a weird resentment for a Character someone could like because you didn't make that choice.
@ShayyTV
@ShayyTV 22 күн бұрын
@@zaxentothegreedy7816 Eh, you still have to go through all of Papyrus's antics and Alphys's texts & calls in their sections of the game. Sure, the further stuff like the dates is your choice, but a lot of it is mandatory for any non-geno run. If you don't like either of those characters it will feel like you're being forced to interact with them quite a lot, which is basically the same thing as Martlet popping up sometimes in my mind. Granted, I like all of them, so it wasn't an issue for me.
