I don’t understand the thinking that just because the dc universe is getting some if not mostly recasted would have any effect on the Shazam movie. If you criticizing a movie it should be based on the movie and not whether a cast change is happening in the future for a character in the movie being reviewed. That would be like reviewing a Superman movie and criticizing that the actor didn’t do the character the same way reeves did. It is pointless critique, no?

This movie was *really* good. As a sequel to one of DC's very best movies, it was a worthy follow-up. The Shazamily is as great as ever, with a surprisingly good story. One of my favorite things is the role reversal of kid and adult Billy. In the first, Billy's adult version was meant to show who he really was underneath the gruff exterior of his younger self. In this one, adult Billy is the facade and young Billy is the vulnerable one.

Just finished watching it and I loved it man. Idk if I agree that it needed to do something different. It was heart felt, fun, action scenes I felt were well executed. I feel like we been getting a lot of poorly written and executed superhero films and I don’t think this is one of those. I loved the horror and how earnest it was

Agreed, I thought this movie was a worthy sequel and hit all the right tones as far as heart felt, comedic, horror and action..........I enjoyed this one more than it's predecessor, 8/10 from me. Go see this movie and just have a good time with it👍🏼

This movie was so fun, 7/10 for me. Very enjoyable and I liked the comedy. Not as good as the first but still a fun movie and it had lots of action. I cried at a few parts. I love that ending, I won’t spoil who shows up for anyone who is reading this and haven’t seen the movie yet, but I loved it. And Rachel Zegler is so pretty, I loved her in the movie

I think the difference in character between Shazam and Billy can be explained like This - The Champion is not a representation of the character's mind. The Champion is a representation of the character's Heart Shazam represents the pure heart within Billy. He isn't supposed to reflect Billy's mental state. Hence why the wizard looked for someone of pure heart. Shazam's silly heart is a reflection of the innocence in Billy's heart ⚡

I really enjoyed this one. I hope more 4 quadrant movies embrace a little more of a darker tone, nothing crazy but 10 and up to push the stakes and thrill. I get wanting something fresh and new but other comic films haven’t been delivering on the basics like jokes or action sequences. It was nice having a super hero film that didn’t hold back for the sake of building future stories.

Here’s my letterbox review. Great review as always Austin Sometimes going bigger doesn’t mean better, but the movie still retains the charm of the previous film and that’s great due to the actors and the ever charismatic man-child Zachary Levi. The previous film was a unique addition to superhero films: Big meets the superhero genre
And that’s what’s kind of missing here as it trades the heartfelt small scale story for a big scale epic. It still works, but it takes away from the unique franchise it could have become. Still, this movie is a lot of fun. Fans who love superhero movies as they are will still be satisfied, but those who feel burned out by the over-saturation of the genre, might be displeased. Also the ending was so predictable and it even had an emotional punch, but is somewhat ruined by jokes… Super-hero movies like the Western may one day not be as prevalent, but the key to making them relevant is to do new and unique things, this movie does not do that despite all the fun it has and self-awareness. Again, I enjoyed this one and look forward to seeing the future of DC films. Here’s hoping Shazam sticks around awhile more. In conclusion, it’s a decent sequel, a worthy one in fact, but it’s not as great as it’s unique predecessor.

Personally…this movie is all over the place, I can’t keep track of every character and their growth cuz the script just jump the characters’ story back and forth, the villains r just as forgettable, and the actions…r just so little(if the story is good then I wouldn’t mind)and underwhelming, I still love the family dynamic, I just feel like the script is really them making stuffs up as they go there’s no pace things just…happened…especially with that forced cameo in the end, also am I the only one who realized that Asher’s(who play young Billy)screen time is massively reduced in this one

I'm someone who has zero superhero fatigue but I'm just not excited for this movie. Mainly because of the characterization of the hero just isn't that interesting. I'd prefer he was less playful and more serious. The comics show him as child-like but he doesn't act like a goof.

As someone who really loves the first Shazam, I hate to admit that I was disappointed by Fury of the Gods. This is by no means a bad film. There are things that I enjoyed about it. Jack Dylan Grazer and Djimon Hounsou were the true standouts of the whole picture. Grazer was the closest the movie had to a beating heart, and there's a beautiful emotional scene towards the end that he acted the hell out of. Hounsou had more to do this time around as the Wizard, and his deadpan sense of humor really worked. A couple of humorous moments got me, namely a dinner date in Paris and Helen Mirren reading a letter. The bridge scene is easily the best set piece in the film. It had a sense of groundedness missing in most superhero action, as well as a nice banter between the heroes that hammers home the family dynamic. The visual effects are nowhere near as solid as the first movie but still solid throughout. The dragon looked cool. There are interesting ideas they set up early in the film: Billy suffering from impostor syndrome, him having to juggle between being a superhero and a big brother, the fallout from the bridge scene leading to the city turning against the Shazamily and not to mention the conflict between Billy and the foster mom. One last positive thing: I like the mid credit scene, what it promises and the little Marvel dig. Whether that leads to anything, it's up in the air. Unfortunately, that is where the positive ends. I felt Fury of the Gods fell into the same trap Quantumania did. Both Ant Man and Shazam are, to me, these everyman superheroes who thrive more in small-scale, low-stake adventures. Once you pit them against larger-than-life figures like a Kang or, in Shazam 2's case, the Greek goddesses, the unique charm you associate with these characters gets lost in the mix. It's as if they sacrificed the heart and refreshing smallness of the first movie in favor of action set pieces, special effects, visual noise and shameless Skittles plug in this sequel. Bigger does not always mean better. You have the conflict between Billy and his mom that is just resolved so abruptly so that we can move on to more punching. And, while I love Zachary Levi as Shazam, I found him annoying in the sequel. There's nothing to suggest that Levi and Asher Angel are the same character. It doesn't make sense for Levi to be so immature, dumb and goofy, even more so than in the first movie, where Asher Angel was pretty much everything but those things. I relish the few moments we get with Asher Angel, who is so criminally underused, and rue a lot of what we got from Levi. That emphasizes how much I miss Asher Angel in this movie. More Zachary Levi means taking away the heart and soul of it. Even the humor is kind of hit and miss. More like 20% hits and 80% misses. At times, the writing felt like something you would often see in a Disney Channel TV movie than a proper theatrical release. The first Shazam was always geared towards younger audience, but it felt like a family film. Shazam 2 feels like one of those Illumination, kids-only films. And the villains themselves were embarrassing. Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu gave it their all as Hespera and Kalypso respectively, but they can only do so much with such generic baddies that I can take only as seriously as any Power Rangers villain. They're not even remotely close to being threatening or menacing. I too often found Lucy Liu's line delivery unintentionally funny. Rachel Zegler wasn't given that much meat to sink into either. And yes, we do have a cameo in the end that was spoiled by many of the ads. Without spoiling, I HATED that cameo. Before that cameo, the movie took a bold route that, as mediocre as what happened prior to that may be, made me semi-appreciate it. Then that cameo comes along, a cameo that nearly ruined the film for me. That cameo was cheap, pandering and pointless fan service that took away any sense of stake and consequence from the moment. I don't understand the necessity of that cameo beyond its function as a textbook Deus Ex Machina or a weird payoff to a recurring gag. I was like Dane Whitman, saying to Sersi, "where were you during the ending" when that moment happened. Not to mention the idea of having the superhero version of Mary played also by the young version of Mary, which I found distracting. How is it that everyone transforms into an adult in Shazam form, but Mary still looka the same? If the Shazamily really holds the concept of secret identity in high regards, would that defeat the purpose? And the post credit scene ... so, so pointless. Let me reiterate, as much as I have a lot of problems with Shazam 2, I did not hate it. This is a solidly mid tier DCEU entry that I would put above David Ayer's Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman, Josstice League, Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Adam but below everything else. But the fact that that is the case whereas the first Shazam was a top 3 best DCEU film for me is frustrating. 6/10.

Austin, I like your channel and generally like your takes. That said, some really weak film critics here. Everything’s been done before. Most stories have a structure that’s somewhat predictable (literally every Marvel movie?) That’s not a great criticism. Bringing up the state of the DCEU isn’t really appropriate as a film critic as it has nothing to do with *this* movie. That’s a no-no in film criticism. This movie is exactly what it’s trying to be and it dies a damn good job of it. This is a good movie. It’s a great time at the movies. It’s exactly what its target audience wants. TLDR: you’re wrong.

All critic reviews should be delayed till the weekend after the movie's release date. Early screening for so-called critics should no longer be allowed. An individual's opinion is just that, an opinion. Some people will use their bias to destroy a movie's sales simply because they do not like that franchise. This happened to most DC movies because most people today are Marvel fans. Online critics destroyed Black Adams's sales because they are Marvel puppets.

Disappointing, it should have had Cavill and The Rock... Notice ever since Cavill in Black Adam all DC Studios films have "secret cameos" to drag us into buying tickets to their pointless films?? James "I am the studio" Gunn's (his words not mine) Gunnverse is the Hamadaverse on steroids. He doesn't take DC characters seriously and is riding on the coattails of the dying MCU franchise and wants to turn everything into a silly horror film. Narcissistic self-involved nepotism and abuses his authority to personally insult cast, crew, and fans. We are finding out everything Gunn told us is a lie. Zaslav made a huge mistake hiring Gunn. The Flash is going to be even more of a travesty and a pale cheap plastic rushed imitation of The Flashpoint Paradox and a completely different story. The DCU is a parody of the MCU and an insult to the intelligence of DC fans.
