They do such a good job of making the characters express their personalities through their body language and facial expressions. You get a really good glimpse of who everyone is just from the way they emote and carry themselves, even in still images. This vid definitely made me appreciate that a lot more.

@M. Woller I don't know what to tell you dude. Almost every character in fiction belongs to an archetype of some kind. Bad writing is if the character is nothing beyond that archetype. Something which in my case doesn't really apply to many characters in FFXIV. And unless you're actively trying to subvert the players expectations, it's generally considered a good idea to try and communicate their personality through their appearance or the player might feel like something is off with the character. Besides, you'd be surprised how difficult it can be to get this right

Woller even in established archetypes you can have interesting and strong characters, I'd challenge you to find 5 original characters that don't belong to a larger archetype but I doubt you'd be able to find even 1 or 2 these days. Honestly you've got no understanding of Design and writing if you think using an archetype = bad writing.

@M. Woller Literally everyone uses archetypes, they're the base for all characters, sure you add personality quirks and all that fun stuff, but they're still in the archetype. The concept of original stories and characters is a myth, it's just different interpretations of them copy and pasted into different timelines and locations. All writers, good and bad use these. As of Shadowbringers I would not consider any of the main cast to be poorly written, sure some were at the start, Thancred was intended to be a lovable scoundrel, Urianger was the quiet intelligent type, Y'shtola was the wandering scholar, Minfillia was the goody goody girl who wanted peace and harmony for all, etc. There have been twists and turns, development of characters, that's how a game and story work, and the FFXIV team has done a good job of making a cast of characters that the community by in large love.

@@MelvaCross 1.0 is complicated. In 1.0 Minfillia was both a kid and an young adult. The first 20 levels of 1.0 jumped between the past and present. I believe the formula was the echo flashbacks where Minfilia was a kid was 15 years before the events of ARR. When we know her as Minfilia, she was 10 years older than we knew her as Ascilia. That was 5 years prior to ARR. I hope that helps with any confusion.
