Anne of Cleves is worth reading about. A scared sister of a duchy in basically Germany, raised in the most austere version of Protestantism for the time, speaking no English, and knowing she couldn’t go home when she was out of favor with this dangerous king. Her brother was awful and is thought to have killed his own father. He actively disliked her. When she signed the papers that ended the marriage and became the “King’s Sister” she was provided with a very comfortable jointure and was left to do as she pleased, essentially. She was very popular as she was kind but funny. Of course she could never marry, as legally the entire dissolution of the marriage was based on a supposed pre contract (betrothal) that she could not prove had been officially broken as her brother consistently failed to send it. Obviously that’s not the real reason, but Henry VIII was very adept at convincing himself he was doing “the right thing” and his excuses were transparent, but he was well in his way to tyranny at that point. It was likely not because she was as he described her, but due to an event on her way to meet her future husband. During entertainment thrown in her honor, Henry VIII showed up “disguised”, something he loved to do, and kissed her dressed as essentially a commoner. Naturally, she smacked him and rebuked him. His pride was notorious and hurting it was literally dangerous. When he took the throne he really was an attractive Renaissance man, taller than most anyone else with that red gold hair and EASILY recognizable to all subjects when he did these stunts for that reason. Of course she’d never seen him before and he was well into his decline. He expected the reaction he always got from subjects…feigned surprise and adulation. It’s unlikely anyone told her the portraits she’d seen were woefully inaccurate, and no one would have dared warned her the he was old and fat and graying, so it’s very reasonable that dressed as he was she would assume he was a commoner or a lesser noble. It would be treason to kiss the queen and we all know he’d find a way to blame her for it, so she was probably terrified. And, of course, righteously pissed off. Catherine of Aragon was of course set aside from a combination of his rabid need for a male heir and the arrival of Anne. There was precedent for setting aside a queen when she hit menopause if more heirs were needed, but she was born royal and very beloved by the people. He was particularly cruel to her. To be fair, there was controversy when he married her and a papal dispensation was needed since she was married to Arthur. Anne played the game well until she began to be her true self…spirited, easily angered, and power hungry. Her last pregnancy was her undoing. He made such a big deal of Jane because she (at least appeared to be) the exact opposite…and gave him a legitimate son. While married to his last wife he had a giant family portrait commissioned…which she sat for…only to reveal Jane’s face in the end. He was buried by Jane as he requested. Anne of Cleves I just discussed, and Katherine Howard was thrown into his path by the Duke of Norfolk for the benefit of the Howard family. It’s likely she was just about as immature as is usually portrayed and devastatingly young. Unlike Anne Boylen she did very much have an affair with Thomas Culpepper, which of course was a death sentence. Katherine Parr had her own scare, but was widowed twice and very good at reading Henry’s moods. She lived to marry Thomas Seymour, who then at the least was highly inappropriate with the young Elizabeth I…at worst assaulted her. Under Katherine’s roof. She died giving birth to his child.
