Lauren, you should be in a 1 piece TYVEK SUIT all the time while sanding with respirator (and best filters) and protective eyewear. That ablative paint kills barnacles and the dust can go right thru your pores. There should be no exposed skin ever while sanding that paint and full respirator which you appear to have. Including when using a palm sander! That black ring above your T shirt neckline in the video, on your knees and legs.. this is paint dust and should not be in contact with your skin. Thank you for your wonderful and intrepid videos! It brings my ocean voyages back and is thrilling to relive life at sea thru your trips. Great videos but please take care when dealing with paints, resins and all those wonderful things boat owners use to protect their bottoms .... By the way, I was using a 7" polisher on my hull when a yard hand informed me even that will put harmful fiberglass into the air and into your lungs. I was 26 then with great eyes and still was unable to read that fine print on the cans but the lesson was learned, cover everything and be protected. Have a wonderful time!

I'm full of admiration for your hard work Lauren, but please take care. Our H&S in New Zealand must be so much more strict, they wouldn't let you do that in a boatyard here! There is a NO dry sanding rule because of the toxic paint dust (as mentioned by Mike), so you have to wet sand. Also you would need to use a platform to work at height - much safer than standing on tip toe! And you should wear proper enclosed shoes for safety, not "jandals" that you might trip over. Boatyards are a dangerous place, look after yourself.

Lauren, undertaking such a task with no experience, speaks volumes to your character and determination! I'm not sure there are very many other young people that could or would do this. You are a shining star for your contemporaries to follow. And looking at those dirty hands and dirt caked nails, is a thing of beauty! You inspire and lift my old soul more than I thought was possible from your age group. Congratulations to the family that raised such a special young lady! You are beautiful and that beauty goes all the way to your soul! Keep being so uplifting and inspirational to me and my life. ❤❤❤❤ Doc

Please consider gloves and a little bit of dust protection while sanding. Our skin is very permeable and those chemicals can collect in our organs. The paint dust isn't great either. Some of the metal content from the old paint isn't the best thing to have your body having to expel. Usually takes a long time to realize the damage and by then it's usually not even connected to the source. Anyways, be safe and do some research to be sure that you stay safe and healthy. Great video thanks for the inspiration! I hope to be out there later this year 😅

My thoughts and concerns as well! Chemicals are harsh and will absorb through skin into bloodstream! Gloves and PPE in general. I strongly admire how hard Lauren works to keep this boat beautiful!

Lauren, I have a mad amount of respect for you! Doing this job on your own, not minding the hard work and getting your hands dirty, says A HELL OF A LOT about your character! You certainly are more impressive than most (South African) women that I know who wouldn’t lift a finger at the risk of breaking a nail (god forbid!). As someone that works with an arsenal of power tools everyday, I would just recommend one thing, …your safety gear. Buy yourself a big box of latex gloves, a good respirator mask(3M has got some good ones), knee pads, and safety goggles, and yes… I actually do use swim goggles from time to time too. They do keep the dust out. Great job and well done! I’m truly impressed!!! 👍👍👍

I saw the preview picture for your YT "Getting Dirty" and I immediately recognized the blue stains and dirt .My mind went back 30 years to when we were getting a Beneteau ready for the Trans Superior Race and I was sanding the hull and keel to prep to apply new anti-fouling paint. I was covered in the finest blue powder known to man. The pants I was wearing I threw away as they never came clean. When you said you needed swimmers goggles, I knew exactly what you were referring to. You are most certainly a trooper. I have no doubt you are well rewarded with memories and friends for all the work and effort I see on your videos. As I once heard from a sailor's blessing "I wish you fair winds and following seas." I wish you nothing but the best.👌

Hello Lauren. You keep on amazing me with your work ethics, and perseverance. DO NOT use wax on Awlgrip. It will damage the paint. It will look great for one or two month, then disaster. Wash the hull clean with acetone, or kerosene, then apply a polymer sealer to preserve the gloss. I am in Broward, still recovering from many broken bones, otherwise I would come and help you for a few days. I am highly qualified in the field. Perhaps next time you haul out for refit, and repair. Again you AMAZE me with your capabilities. Why aren't your fans out there helping you?

Have a simple taping trick that will help you get nice smooth lines. Stick the tape end on the edge of the bottom paint and then reel off a few feet. Pull a very slight tension on the tape roll and hold it up and away from the line your taping. Sight your contact point and slowly lay the tape on where you want it. Give it a tap with your finger tip a foot or so each time as you move along. Spool off the tape as you go. When you like what you see, go back and give the tape a smooth rub to make full contact with the hull. Easy. As you were.

I have done a lot of bottom paint jobs. Scotchbrite pads with handles and heavy grit wet/dry sand paper with a hose go WAY faster and is easier on your shoulders. Also, that keel looks like it needs a lot of fairing compound before sanding and painting it.

Some years ago there was a problem with Pearson(?) rudder bearings. They solved it by letting epoxy form the new bearings--but epoxy heavily filled with graphite, so it also self-lubricared. FWIW. These days you can buy molybdium disulphide (moly) powder to make it even more durable and friction free. At reasonable cost.

The older Beneteaus with a stainless steel rudder shaft, have a problem with crevice corrossion of the rudder post, or internal on the armature. Leading to loss of rudder at sea. So next time your rudder is out, inpect very thoroughly. New rudder, six or eight grand. That's why B switched to carbon fibre rudder posts that simply can't corrode. Also, the French required brass gate valves instead of marine brass through hulls. Check yours, make sure they were upgraded.

Aloha Lauren, PPE is needed in the form of a positive pressurised painter's suit. It has a blower inside and you breathe filtered air. Bottom paint is toxic so you need a vacumn on the sander as well. I used a fiberglass paint remover with a scraper and squirt gun. Then I hand sanded with a drywall extension pole with wet or sry sand paper ( wet ). I caught the drips in a tarp on the ground and bottled it up. Then eight coats of paint. Keep water from reaching the fiberglass. Cool Breezes!
