I love you three, soooo much. I've followed for 3 plus years. I don't know how your relationship has survived being in such close quarters. But that's a testament to the love and respect you hold for one another. That love and respect might also be the validation that allows you two to spend time apart. For whatever reason. You two have lived such an accelerated life. Such and accelerated and magnified life is not sustainable super long term, and there's nothing wrong with that. Elayna, you must care for yourself, and Riley must continue to evolve on the path he has chosen, whether that's on land or Sea. Love one another to the extent that you can thrive without being 'with' one another 24/7. That will allow each of you to evolve and grow individually as well as a unit. It's not easy. But your Love and respect for one another will be the anchor or mooring lines that will forever connect the three of you. Take some time Elayna. Do what you must, for you. Love to all three of you. 🎼🎼🎼🎶🎶🎶💙🌈 -Namaste 🕉️
@Valden233 жыл бұрын
Hi Eleyna. This seasickness advice comes to you from a retired Aussie defence scientist who has studied the subject. Firstly, being susceptible to seasickness is something to be proud of, as it means your brain is doing a good job of recognising and processing signals from your eyes and ears. If the movement you feel doesn't correspond with what your eyes see, your brain recognises that something is amiss. Anxiety doesn't help. Having a young child on board will make any mum more anxious than she might have been before. A theory is that the lizard brain's reaction to sensory inconsistency is to induce vomiting, to rid the body of the rubbish you must have eaten to make your brain hallucinate. Why else would the world be spinning? We didn't evolve on catamarans, as it turns out. Research by several navies shows that a very reliable treatment for sensitive individuals - usually young, healthy sailors - is to dose up with scopolamine, taken in the form of Hyoscine hydrobromide (Travacalm HO (Hyoscine Only, in the Red pack, not Blue!), or Quells). A proven approach is, upon departing port, to apply a Hyoscine patch and take a 300mg Hyoscine tablet, simultaneously. The tablet works quickly and fades in 5-6 hours just as the patch picks up the slack and continues to deliver a therapeutic dose for three days or so, by which time your brain has given up trying to make sense of your wobbly world and you've found your sea legs. Do a test of a tablet in harbour to check that you are not allergic. Most users find this treatment causes a dry mouth feeling, which is bit annoying, but worth it. It tends not to cause the drowsiness that Travacalm in the blue pack is famous for - dimenhydrinate is dynamite and will knock you out. The caffeine they put in with it is useless. Good luck. :-)

As a Scuba Diver, I had been told that no-one had ever seen a guy get as seasick as I used to get! It would happen as soon as we left the Inlet and I would be deathly ill until I hit the water for the first time. The surface interval was horrendous! Then, my best friend, who was a Physician prescribed "The Patch" on a cruise to the Bahamas. It goes behind the ear shortly before embarking on any sea and lasts for hours with no drowsiness! I couldn't believe it! On cruises, I was eating the full menu in heavy seas with no nausea or biliousness AT ALL! I know you like to stay natural, Elayna, but try this, or you might have to resign from sailing forever!

The "patch" is scopolamine patch, and it has some side effects. But for an occasional trip out to sea for those of us who get sea sick easily it works.
@Ken-pf5yl4 жыл бұрын
A word of caution with scopolamine patches. they are strong and can make you feel disoriented. If this happens they will take all day to wear off. Also if you touch your eyes with even a little bit of scopolamine on your fingers it will fully dilate your pupil just like a visit to the eye doctor. So wash your hands and do not touch your eye, especially if you cut your patch in half to try and get a reduced dose) Also, if diving around pesky Barracudas in locations such as the USVI you need to be careful that the outer layer of the patch does not peel off after hours in the water and reveal a metal foil type shiny surface that will glisten like a fishing lure and end up attracting a curious barracuda to swim up to your face. Just the sight of a speargun will usually scare them off, but why attract them in the first place.

Sea Sickness Cure, old school. I virtually grew up on a fishing boat out of Welfleet, Cape Cod MA, USA. I never got sea sick but my brother and sister did. An old fisherman we called Captain Jack (RIP) taught us a trick. Don't laugh, just give it a try for 5 minutes next time you feel the sickness coming on. You sit up straight, arch your back, tilt your face to the sky, open your mouth and eyes as wide as you can and arch your feet as hard as possible, hands relaxed and on your lap. Maintain this position for as long as you can, for 5 minutes at least, or until the queasy feelings subside completely. Sounds goofy, but it stabilizes your center of gravity like nobodies business, Just try it, can't hurt.

Elayna, I have suffered badly with seasickness in the past and have tried many remedies and drugs. The only seasick pill that works for me is Stugeron. However, before resorting to a drug I would suggest that you may have a hormone imbalance. A spike of estrogen in your body can cause nausea, very similar to morning sickness There are clinics that can balance your hormones and your hormones can become unbalanced at any stage of your life. Elayna: I’m graduating with a BSc. in Human Physiology and pharmacology in a couple of weeks. Remedies for motion sickness are tricky to remedy especially as a mother and sailor, as most treatments for Nausea, vomiting relate to some adverse effects like: vision disturbances, sedation and shifts in mood. Basically what a doctor could prescribe are antihistamines or anticholinergics. But when it comes to these kinds of things please don’t other peoples anecdotes for your situation, please go see a doctor that can give you the best treatment regimen based on your circumstances. Also antihistamines might be a good idea to keep onboard, as Lenny is allergic to peanuts, maybe also enquire for an epinephrine pen titrated to dose necessary for Lenny. But again not here to diagnose or treat any medical condition, all I’m saying is to see a doctor -as there are many treatment regimens that can help. All the best

Wishing you the best with the seasickness! I get motion sick/seasick a lot and have found that the best way to work through it is to slowly train yourself out of it - which is what it sounds like that alternative therapy is based on.

Hey Elayna! I've been sailing for around six years now on schooners and get TERRIBLY seasick. But two years ago I started wearing plasters behind my ear that help with seasickness, you can get a bit foggy but oh my god it's worth it. I haven't gotten sick one time after wearing them. The ones I use is Scopoderm, and I cut mine so I only have a half plaster behind my ear. Maybe worth giving a try? Just be aware that some people react weirdly to it so try it out on land first!

I get seasick too - I’d try this before the “alternative therapies” / torture she was looking into. That would cause trauma for me. I had a friend who did them for vertigo and he said it’s like being in actual hell. PS as you get older you’re more likely to get seasick. Fact of life. Hit me at 35 😕

Was going to suggest the same, I’ve always had seasickness and the acupressure bands really worked for me. Elayna see if you can get hold of a pair, worth a try and they’re very cheap. You have to make sure they’re positioned correctly on your wrists. I asked my acupuncturist about them and she also thinks they’re great.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time on the ocean and have also seen these bands work. Also diet has played a part in weather I feel quiesy at times so the old sailor’s trick might have some validity. Another trick is to sit at the stern and look to the horizon, it looked like the therapy with the 3D goggles is based on helping you adjust to vertigo, which results when your middle ear and visual field are sending mixed signals to your brain. Neurologist use a manipulation of your head to realign the middle ear, that might be an alternative for you as well. I have not heard of anything related to child birth that could effect vertigo, but if you’ve had congestion in your ears or even wax buildup it can effect your vertigo. Sorry to hear that you are having trouble but try some different things (best thing I’ve tried for wax build up and what Dr’s recommend is an over the counter treatment you can get at any pharmacy called Debrox. The first time I used this I was to gentle with putting in my ears you have to do a medium pressure flush. Sorry for the long post. Lenny is a legend, he needs his own channel. Thanks

Margarida on the "Sailing Into Freedom" KZbin channel has similar seasickness issues. Maybe talk to her for support and look for help together. You could be Seasick Buddies. It might help just talking to someone else going through the same thing. Not with the physical aspect, but with the psychological aspect of the whole thing. As you said, this is your job, your home, and your life. Same with her. I imagine it gets very tough not being able to fully enjoy the amazing places you get to visit. There a aviation channels with good recomendations in regards to motion sickness, which pilots get as well. During combat pilot training, a high percentage gets motion sick but it will better after 2 weeks of daily motion sickness. For the 10% where that doesn't work, they get 3 days with doctors which strap them into a Bárány chair. That's the last resort which is extreme but it mostly works. The military has years of experience curing motion sickness because they don't want to loose good pilots. Should help you as well if you find a facitlity with a Bárány chair.

Another great video. I get seasick if I'm a bit stressed about a passage that might be a bit lumpy. Stugeron works for me as it dulls the balance mechanism of the middle ear. 2 tabs a couple of hours before leaving then maybe another after 6 hours but normally I'm fine on just the initial dose. When you're out there you tend to relax into whatever you find anyway, no sense of drowsiness either. Love your stuff and sailing on my much smaller boat, no great wish to go as far as you but it is a great way to see the world and meet people. Keep safe!

I love your videos, you're all living your best lives. For seasickness, I had to beat it while working as a kayak guide on board an "expedition" ship going across the Drake Passage to Antarctica every ten days. I did this for 14 years. So I'll share with you what worked for me. I tried SO many different things but finally got the most relief from using acupuncture needles and supplementing with ginger capsules. I started the needles 12-24 hours in advance. You can get travel needles, and instructions on exactly where to place them. They come attached to little bits of tape that hold them in place, and you wear them full time while needed. There are three pairs of places to insert them, and nope, they don't hurt. The two easiest places to reach are inner forearms and just below the knees near the outside of the leg. The third location is tops of the feet. You shouldn't have trouble getting used to having them in place. Our Drake crossings lasted 2-2.5 days. I still had slight woozy feelings but if I quickly got on my bunk for 30 minutes the feeling went away. Working as a guide on multiple trips we'd get into port, have a few hours off the ship, then straight back out into the Drake Passage again. So the time was compounded. This worked for me better than pills or ginger tea or those pressure bands. I hope this helps!!!

Elayna ... I've had sea sickness for my entire life. Hi, Basil's wife chiming in here. There are those elastic bracelets with a button that you put on your wrist in a specific way that are like an acupressure to short circuit the signal which causes the brain to process the nausea. They work pretty well, but, there is also a wristband that has been developed that gives sort of electrical shock/current, more that just the pressure to the nerve, and I have found it to be VERY effective. Also I agree doing the Pre meds and hydration is the best way to use the Non drowsy drami. We went to the Azores in 2017. Sao Miguel was stunning, but we really love Terceira! I cannot wait to returnto visit the other islands! Pro tip, if you go back to the mainland, Madeira and the other islands there should not be missed!
