I only knew one song of hers from a old 45 record my older sister gave me when I was six. On one side was "Just A Little" (don't remember the song on the other side). Loved that song and her voice and thought she deserved much more recognition. Really surprised to hear she had a long career and wondering why I never heard her on the radio or saw her on TV over the years.
@daleb12792 жыл бұрын
@@LM-hb6yn Everyone hears her "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" every holiday season. She is a humble lady that never craved the spotlight like so many others. But considering she was the top selling female artist in the 1960s (only the Beatles, Elvis and Ray Charles outsold her), she just hasn't gotten as much public recognition as she deserves in her later life. She's also the only woman inducted into the Country and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame (and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame) so professionally she is recognized as one of the greats though.

[Dale B] Not quite!! Brenda Lee started singing when she was 5 or 6. Times were different back then; TV was just starting so the whole dynamics of the music industry were different when considering how a talent got their start. Brenda was taken down to the soda shop by her brothers and sisters at about 5 years old (this was after their father had died in an on the job accident) and she would sing and people would tip her with nickels and dimes. Her mother did work but the money Brenda brought in really helped. Fast forward and Red Foley discovered her at one of those local talent shows and the rest is history. (I am not sure how old Brenda was but she was younger than 10, maybe 7 or 8)

Other great Brenda Lee songs: “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” (1958), “I’m Sorry” (1960), “Dum Dum” (1961), and “Break It To Me Gently” (1962). The early 60s were a time of top 40 lists, and a time of many kinds of hit music. For example, the lists for some weeks had songs by both Frank Sinatra and Nancy Sinatra. Billboard’s #1 song for 1962 was by a clarinet player (Acker Bilk’s “Stranger on the Shore”), but Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” was also a huge song that year. Brenda Lee could be found on the same list as the Beach Boys, Dee Dee Sharp, Freddy Cannon, or Gary U.S. Bonds. An interesting time.

The instrument you hear playing is a harpsichord. It's a piano that sounds..."tingy".

Great memories from a really young age for me when this came out. She started singing at a very young age. I was born in mid50s and our family listened to all kinds of music growing up. I'm thankful my parents loved music,as I certainly have all my life.

You have to remember that there was very little production in these early recordings, definitely nothing like today with autotune and mixing, so these are just beautiful pure natural voices and real instruments! During WW2 my parents listened to Vera Lynn - particularly White Cliffs of Dover was a big hit then.

She was my Daddy's favorite singer.

Brenda Lee had a long and successful career that started very young. She came from very humble beginnings and remained true to those values . Have to also mention the references to "Brenda Lee's 'Coming on Strong' " from Golden Earring's "Radar Love." I always get a kick out of hearing that line!

That’s right! Barry Hay, the songwriter of Radar Love said: Brenda Lee was my mother's favorite singer. I grew up with her songs playing in the house and I loved this kind of music! Jordan also loved Radar Love!

I am so grateful to you both for bringing this music back to me. I was nine when this song was on the radio, so I heard it because my parents were listening! By the way, I think it’s a Spinet, a kind of piano.
