The problem is now even 2nd hand is becoming not easily accessible. You've got "thrift stores" charging near retail prices for used clothes
@BrokeredHeart
@BrokeredHeart Жыл бұрын
Depends on the store I guess, but I've shopped at commission shops before and found an assortment of high end brand clothing for cheap, and then conversely fast fashion items that were barely discounted from the original tag prices. It's bizarre. Value Village has become unrecognizable in recent years, but I think it has to do with the influx of discarded clothing and cookware that arrived post-lockdown. They've increased the resale price of a lot of items, which is a real shame. I don't mind paying a little more for gently used items (like $15 instead of $10 for a button-down dress shirt), but knowing that most people dump their stained/stretched/scratched/ripped trash on those poor workers, it's getting more difficult to find wearable clothing from them anymore. I've gotten more into the habit of repairing my things instead of throwing them out, trying to make them last longer.

From what I understand most 'thrift stores' in the US are a private business venture, what they sell doesn't go to charity, rather they pay charities to licence their names to make it look like all the proceeds go to the charities. They're priority is profit making, not the dual purpose of making things available cheaper for the under privileged and raising money for charity at the same time, like it is in other countriies.

The huge thing you skipped over in terms of the 5,000 pilots being "medically unfit" was why they do it; they are scared to report mental health. Some examples are unless you are seeking marriage counseling, you MUST report it to the FAA. Pilots who are senior enough to have a lot of cash will pay for counseling out of pocket, instead of going through insurance, to not report it to the FAA. They simply want to meet with someone about the stress of being a pilot: the time away from home and family, the burden of debt they took on to go through flight training, or other factors. If you go through insurance or voluntarily report your counseling to the FAA, the FAA doesn't care, all they see is you reported counseling through insurance and boom, they're on your ass and think you're a danger. I have been through the FAA's machine for an invalid ADHD diagnosis. I had to basically prove the the original diagnosis was invalid and spent $5,000 out of pocket before I could even begin training, none of which is covered by insurance btw so that was a huge hit to me being 16 - 17 years old. Could some of these pilots be of serious danger? Sure, but with my MANY experiences with the FAA, being tossed around because of an ADHD diagnosis I received when I was unbelievebnnly young, working and talking with others who are forced to deal with the FAA's circus act and unbelievably outdated and antiquated policies towards mental health, I bet most of these pilots were seeking the right treatment they needed, and now they're out of a job which does quite the opposite of helping them. You want the skys to be safer? Allow pilots to seek proper mental health without the stigma of "They are a danger to everyone" for simply seeking counseling or other mental health treatment. As someone active in aviation, this hurts me. 5,000 people out of jobs or losing their (possibly) biggest hobby of seeing the world from atop.

I wore things I already owned to Barbie. And at this point fast fashion production is absolutely divorced from the actual consumption of garments. Yes literal millions of tons of clothes are thrown out my consumers each year - but the garment companies themselves throw away just as much unworn and I purchased merchandise if not more. It isn’t just on the consumer to make more conscious choices but on legislators worldwide to put laws into place limiting the overproduction and eliminating the exploitation of the textile workforce.

Agreed. Previously I've worked for a big name company christmas ornament seller, and I can't even begin to tell you how many ornaments never even made it on shelves because they were broken while in the stock room. We had one ornament in particular that was known for shoddy craftsmanship, and every time I had to get more from the stock room I would give the hanging hook a good solid tug before putting it in the pile to go out on the floor, because a good 40% I'd say would pull out immediately, leaving the ornament broken and useless, unsellable. It was ridiculous. So many ornaments trashed without ever seeing the customer side of the store because they were made by underpaid, mass production labor. I've been to two "big" events this year, and everything I wore to them I already owned, save for a necklace I made and will wear again. We really need global reform on this kind of thing. Consumerism is out of control.

the thing about fast fashion they don't really talk about is that some of the outfits we bought on regular brand store are also purchased by sweatshops like ardene. their qualities clothing are either equal or worse than shein. I compared the two outfit I purchased from both they are the same. the only difference was the price. some major industry pumped up the price on their store when their clothes qualities are terrible. I used to shop at second hand store but seeing the pump in used clothes are insane... things that used to cost 5 or less now ended up around 10 or more. either buy used stuff for 10 or buy new one from shein for less than 10? the big issue is these name brand companies always and will continue pump up prices for the exact clothes and dame materials. I tried Amazon and Walmart for household items and surprised their price is doubled compare to the one from shein for the same product....

It' a cycle, the best thing is to try your best and call corporations out for exploiting the market. Halloween only comes once per year, and unless you're buying a one-and-done outfit from a "costume shop" (I've literally never done this), and most costumes feature repurposed or recycled general clothes to some degree. @@ronswanson1410 Eh, like Phil said, dressing up is a part of the experience. Same reason why people feel the need to dress up for any occasion: birthday, funeral, job interview or whatever. But I do agree doing so doesn't give an excuse to add to the problem and buy from fast fashion. Better to thrift, use what you already have in a unique way, buy local, or just only ever sparingly do so. What's excessive is always buying new outfits, not dressing up in and of itself. I think it depends on the individual reseller. I've watched people in thrift stores, especially Pay Per Pound places, go pretty close to insane... Grabbing up literally multiple shopping carts full of stuff, fighting over things, etc. Just to resell at a much higher price. And they do it daily. For years. In low income areas.

I agree with buying stuff second hand IF you are going to buy something new for these tours. I personally just put together my best outfit for Barbie, it wasn't entirely pink, but it was cute and I was probably more comfortable in it then if I did a full pink dress. Second hand is def the best solution in the short term, but hopefully we just see more eco-conscious concerts in the future. Obviously these clothes will still be there once these concerts are over, so I just hope this is a one-time-thing type of scale and we don't see this type of contribution to fast fashion in the future. I also attribute this *more* to the concerts than Barbie because they're specifically asking people to dress up, dressing up for Barbie was more of an organic phenomenon, and I feel like nearly everyone has at least one outfit they can put on to go see Barbie, even if not perfect, while the super shimmery and chrome outfits are less likely already there. Idk, maybe this is a little bias because I don't really care for concerts but I loved Barbie.

4:35 story: Don't buy things you can't wear for more than 1 specific thing. It's more people not taking care of clothes properly and not being thoughtful about the versatility of their personal style. The secondhand Market benefits from certain factors it is not made for everyone due to the nature of the industry itself; At affordable prices, there is a lack of stylish products for XL, XXL, XXXL and X1, X2, X3 etc. Sparkly or whatever type of interesting visually outfits can be worn daily (tho most don't wear the same thing everyday) if it's part of the style of colour story in your closet. If not, celebrating things like your birthdays, clubbing, and dates are all reasons to wear something sparkly if you have it. You can find ways to use unique clothes more than once, even if you take scissors and thread to it. Speedy fashion stuff. Or donate it to people in need at shelters (you never know who might find it to boost their confidence for even a bit) or do clothing swaps.

The problem is not single-use outfits in general but the phenomenon that occasions calling for them are increasing. Prom and Halloween have been around for quite some time but now add festivals, concerts, baby showers, wedding getting more and more specific with their „aesthetics“, etc… I have to attend four weddings this year and was reminded of my family that it is not ok to wear the same dress to all of them. It's been years since I used a Linus video to help me make a decision on tech. I prefer HUB for review and the over view of the product. I also typically search for the channels that do specific pairings. So I can see what I can expect with my actual system, instead of what cards can do on the very best systems. I really don't like how Linus handled any of this, and I still kind of feel he is using victimization as a bit of shield. No one condones death threats, however, people understand it is an unfortunate side effect of the age of social media. It's wrong no matter when it happens, but I don't want to hear that and him bragging on doubling mental health insurance. I don't want people to be reactionary. I want them to be thoughtful, and well nothing about this situation paints Linus as genuinely thoughtful, and more worried about making as much money as he can and trying to clear his image. Yes *and* no, you can use simulation by running recorded input. And frankly, I think having some requirements on standardisation would be brilliant, that way the local government can run independent tests on the car. Basically, you can already run certain tests on cars through their internal logic bus. That's very brand specific however. By enforcing that automatic cars have to follow certain standards you could test each car by flipping it into emulation mode for it's annual checkup. To the software, it's still driving the car, but it's been disconnected from the physical hardware and is being fed recorded sequences that should trigger certain behaviour that can be tested. It would add a safety layer, and it doesn't necessarily have to take all that long to do either, you could chain the tests in a quick succession. Not to mention, since the car is autonomous you can have it automatically go for the checkup while you're doing other things. Each government can simply have their own local check list, like record some of the most accident prone roads, or special circumstances that might not happen in other countries, like blizzards, elk crossings, flooded roads, whatever. I feel a lot of the potential benefits of having autonomous cars are being ignored, like rerouting traffic around accidents automatically, having them cooperatively clear a lane for emergency services, traffic decongesting (no queues), short distance communication to form logical busses, road-side repeaters that allow one car to signal a hazard with timestamp so that the next car that comes through is aware that there's wildlife in the area. Things that would simply be information overload to a human driver, but an autonomous vehicle could digest and use to improve safety, both for the car itself and for others. But all of this requires both standardisation and willingness to build a better road network. It could also improve things for regular drivers through the use of GPS or even adding part of the vehicle communication to existing cars. You could easily save money as a society by spending a bit of money on smarter features that you then recoup by increased productivity and reduced healthcare costs. A repeater by the side of the road wouldn't have to be particularly high tech btw, whether you use RFID, bluetooth, or IR you can create a very cheap low energy circuit that runs on PV or even gets fed power by the passing car (RFID would do that automatically for instance.) It then just transmits said standardised packet backwards to the previous repeater down the line and passes the data to the following cars.

He threatened to shoot my grandmother one day UNPROVOKED and his whole family became nasty to her. She was quite upset because this other Filipino woman was one of her only living friends. She would randomly speak about missing her friend and hoping she realizes her husband's family hates her too for almost a year. This was until the son got arrested for beating up a homeless man and not denying it was racially motivated, even in custody. My grandma's friend came over to apologize on Sunday I was home and we all told her to get the Hell out. She had all the "Sorrys" in the world but was QUITE quick with those slurs before her son took it too far for even them. And those slurs apply to you too [REDACTED]. My grandma comforted her when she would cry at our house from how horribly her sister-in-laws treated her so to turn just like them for their approval was unforgivable.

I watched a lot of Linus Tech Tips videos over the past several years or more. When they came out with their testing, they said it was early on, and deserved to be given the benefit of the doubt. At the same time, they were claiming it as a source of authority while it was extremely inconsistent, and sometimes just straight up very obviously wrong. Their response to being told it was wrong was to double down and barely attempt to correct it. The only reason anyone at that channel responded in the way they did is because another more well respected channel reacted to being repeatedly called out, and proved exactly how inaccurate their data was. I don't expect anything to change in terms of their data and testing. They've always been an entertainment focused channel, and probably always will be. The sexual harassment stuff is horrid, but if you see the techbro environment in a lot of their videos it's unfortunately not surprising.

I live in San Francisco. I was walking to work a few days ago and came across some construction at an intersection. There were 4 lanes, 2 each direction. One of the inside lanes was sectioned off for construction/maintenance. A Cruise car drove up, detected the cordoned off area correctly, then instead of pulling right into the empty and clear outside lane, pulled left into the wrong direction lane. It then came to a complete stop, blocking oncoming traffic, unsure of what to do, occasionally jittering back and forth. Once traffic drove around it and cleared out, the car sloooowly navigated itself around the construction, albeit in the wrong lane. So all in all, a mixed bag. It clearly messed up, but I guess it gets some points for being able to eventually correct itself. It didn't run me over jittering back and forth while I was walking behind it, so that's good, too, I guess. This looks like the world we have to live in until the industry gets through these growing pains.

The reason so many pilots are misrepresenting their medical conditions is because the FAA is incredibly restrictive with what it counts as a disqualifying condition. Spend years and tens of thousands of dollars to chase a dream, only to be disqualified for being having totally treatable issues. If that wasn't bad enough, then the VA folds to the FAA, gives up sensitive medical information from thousands of veterans, all while there is a massive shortage in all things related to air travel.

Self driving technology shouldn't be banned all together but it does need to be tested in more controlled situations before just being let loose. I also fully believe that we need additional infrastructure to support the technology. For example, it would be super helpful if traffic lights gave off directional RF signals that told cars in a specific lane what light is currently being shown. This is super simple technology and fixes the issues with intersections. And since you only really need to hit the first car in line, you can easily fit it in existing traffic lights. Obviously that doesn't fix every problem but you get my point, we need additional infrastructure to support self driving cars.

They go to the stores they always go to and buy a shirt, they go back a week later and there’s new clothing and they go, oh they got new stuff in, ohh I like this shirt and it’s affordable! Capitalism created fast fashion, people buy it because they don’t know better not because they go, “hmm I could pay $100 for this and have it last for decades and was made by someone making a living wage or I could pay $15 for this one and throw it in a few months or a year because it’s ruined while the people making is make about a dollar for every hundred they make and the large corporation is raking it in and throwing out and ruining anything not sold. @@chase-warwickI used to believe this growing up as I come from low-income and never had the luxury of name-brand or new clothes. However, I’m finding $35 shirts at goodwill these days. It’s much cheaper and within my budget to get clothes from Amazon or some other online retailer. It’s not fair to enforce morality on poor people when we just want clothes for work/daily life and can’t even afford that from 2nd hand. The real issue is 2nd hand clothes have been gentrified and commodified and thus no longer an “affordable” option. And to push back, the fashion industry really should be who we hold accountable. If we are no longer able to produce clothes in these slave-labor conditions which harm the environment, consumers won’t have the ability to behave in such a way. It’s much easier to change a means of production than it is to alter consumer consciousness.

No one demanded Coca-Cola or Proctor and Gamble or Monsanto exist. These companies used marketing, research, etc., to create the demand. The monster has always been the industries and their questionable regulations. People have always been resilient and taking or using what's available. LTT/LMG has been pretty clear about hiring immigrants. That while they have no issues with foreign people, they don't love the bureaucratic process and how nothing is guaranteed. Especially when it means brining a person into one of the most expensive places to live in the world. No idea what type of job you were applying for, but LMG has many female employees. And as far as I can tell there's a strong "girls club" so it's not like they are segregated from exchanging stories.

@@jeremyO9F911O2 i know of the immigration policy, they've made it clear since. It wasn't clear back then, they didn't have the "needs permission to work on canada" thing. It was just before covid hit. I suspect they didn't realize people from across the world would apply, which is a little nearsighted, but harmless and honestly fair. Nowhere near my point. I was teying to say that I'm glad that policy is in place, cause i wouldn't say no and I'd probably walk into a very unbalanced work environment with no support network, alone across the world. I was younger and dumber and i dodged a bullet. As far as the "girls club" thing, have you read Madison's story? And not just that. They published a video where most of the staff admit they're overworked. That doesn't seem like the type of environment to have any sort of work-life balance. I won't go as far as to call it exploitive, because i have no proof of such a thing, but they seem to ride the "this is a dream job, anyone would kill to work here" justification. His stance on unions within his business also is a bit of a red flag. "If they need a union, i have failed as a boss". Yes, bitch, you fucking did. There's also something about making your employees work on your house that bothers me a little. That's not a serious one, just one more to add to the pile, i guess.

@@wasd_totallyreal_dsaw9865 ok They actually have done the immigration thing Dennis and John Martin are the examples I know of. Though John was able to return to SC and work remote, his decision as I understand it. So I assume they learned the immigration lesson the difficult way. There's literally a girls club. As far as I can tell LMG paid well and we've seen their benefits are pretty good. As for the Union thing, people are just ignorant and moronic about that one. I work Union so I know. But to start most Canadian provinces have basic labour laws that just grant most of the rights unions are traditionally known for. Having seen LMGs benefits this is also a big portion of what unions often cover. That mostly leaves wage negotiation, but I've never heard so much as a peep about this being a problem in LMG. Now let's talk about the other side of unions. The works must do their own organization, not host in the formation of the union, but the maintaining of it too. And the company doesn't need to pay for that organization time, the union members pay this through dues. Unions usually must objectify roles too reducing flexibility in the organization. Fundamentally you only unionize when you need to, and if you don't, there's no point. For me I work in an industry where my skills are 100% transferable to any other company that is the same industry that I work. For this reason union is very useful because I can move between companies and my wage and benefits stay the same. Though I've never actually had cause to move in over 15 years. LMG is not like this, they are fully unique and while many skills would be transferable, it's just not the same. Linus saying his employees unionizing would be a failure on his part, is the most reasonable statement ever.

In my opinion, I don’t think the concerts in particular are an issue here. It’s just a particularly good example of something that already happens all year round. If anything, I’d be willing to bet the “throw out after 1 use” rate compared to those who keep/pass them on isn’t very different from normal. It’s just a higher volume all at once. Also, somewhat connected, I think a good way to combat the throwing out of clothes constantly would be to, as a culture, embrace modifying and mending our clothes. Often times people will throw out a shirt if the button gets popped off, because they just don’t want to go through the trouble of mending it or finding someone else to mend it. And people often see visible mending on things as “trashy” and not as a sign of character on the clothes. I’ve seen some change on this in the past decade, but I think it could make a big difference in how many clothes end in landfills if more people shift their thinking about clothes.
