Skinny black women get that same treatment too. We don't have eurocentric features, our naturally slim african bodies are just conventionally attractive to many people. Doesn't make us less black.

This is like denying colorism because light skin black people exist. Nose shape, hair texture and skin color are all things that determine if a black woman is considered beautiful and you can add light eyes as well. Having an oval face and a sharp nose.

@onjelbercier

@thewordsmith5440 I disagree. If this were the 1950s, someone like her would not be seen as attractive if she did not at least look like Dorothy Dandrige. Yes, Lupita has a delicate face, but you will never see a white person with her face. Her features are proportionate, and that's all that matters. Her nose is not necessarily smaller than the rest of her face. Being a kibbe-verified soft classic, all of her features are moderate in proportion to each other. That's not to say that having any irregularities will make someone ugly, but Lupita is an example of having a button nose, big lips, wide cheeks, 4c hair, and dark skin while being attractive. Proportion is attractive in any ethnicity. But when others see a proportionate face, they equate it with a Eurocentric standard of beauty. The truth is that nothing is truly Eurocentric if all ethnicities can share these features. We have no reason to believe that Lupita is not a pure blooded African woman. Therefore, any features she has are granted to her by her black lineage. That would make her Afrocentric. And to say that being obviously beautiful means you first have to be Eurocentric would be the same as saying that you are not beautiful unless a white person says you are. But I think we can all agree that if most people, regardless of race, think you are attractive then you are.

As a south sudanese woman, i have found it so offensive when people say indigenous African women from my country have eurocentric features. Growing up, i have always had people asking me where I'm from. I later realised there are a lot of people who find women from my country attractive and some are obsessed with us, and i noticed a lot of white people who kept asking me weird questions about my ethnic background. I didn't mind other Africans asking me these questions though. However, I feel like i really need to call the BS and hypocrisy out from other Africans!! I have heard African women saying i bet white men will like you, they tend to like women who look like you! How strange considering i don't date white men 😂 i don't worship them as others do, nor do i even care for wyt people's beauty standards and most south sudanese people are like this too. We set our own beauty standards because we know we are beautiful. I've also heard other Africans referring to South Sudanese women's features as eurocentric which is daft. My people are one of the oldest people on planet earth, so miss me with that eurocentric features bs!!!

You might as well deny colorism. Featurism is a problem across all black communities. It doesn't matter is someone is fully African people are still align with what Europeans call beautiful. It's a reason why Belgium's considered Tutsi to be more beautiful it was heavily based on their oval faces and thin noses. Same with Somalis. I agree, but only to an extent. 1) "Conventional": Eurocentric features do not imply that these features aren't black, they insinuate that these features are deemed the standard in the European world. European does not mean Eurocentric. I think this is where you've got these concepts confused. Not all Europeans have slim noses, and not all Black people have wide noses. You're right regarding these two facts. However, you and some of the commenters have used the term "conventional". How could you use the word conventional and simultaneously disregard the connection between beauty standards and Europe. "Conventional" is defined as a collectively agreed standard or way of living based on society. Our society, our global society, has been European-dominated for centuries. So, to say "oh... people only say that Black people with conventional features have Eurocentric features" is ironic and contradicting. 2) Simply eradicating the fact that each community's beauty standards isn't in someway tied to Europe has a "I don't see color" vibe to it. I'd love to agree that beautiful African women in the Western world aren't praised because of European beauty standards (slim noses, loose-textured hair, long eyelashes) but that's just ignorant. 3) However, I do profoundly agree with the idea that the constant correlation between beautiful Black women and Europe is a double-edged sword. We try to attack the issue of Eurocentric beauty standards while simultaneously hurting ourselves and, like you said, putting Europe on a pedestal. I second the idea that another term besides Eurocentric should be used. Not for its definition (because Eurocentric doesn't necessarily mean all of Europe, it's just the standard of Europe which has been imposed on the rest of the world), but because a lot of people cannot comprehend the genuine meaning of this term and it, therefore, confuses the masses. Although, if another term is proposed, we can't just deny the fact that a lot of the women OUR COMMUNITY puts on a pedestal are mostly seen as desirable due to the beauty standards which Europe set for the world.

For me, I didn’t get the “pretty for a dark girl.” “Black barbie” talk. I was either made fun of for my color and being “ugly”, or over-sexualized. I’m almost 36, and the older I get, the more men sexualize me. I didn’t grow up around a lot of black peers. I now live in a predominantly black city/state, and the over sexualization I get from black men here is absurd. I think they are intrigued by how I look as I’m not from this state and I don’t follow clothes trends etc..(I dress very bright, bubbly, and such). But it’s just disgusting how much harassment I get from them. And I see a difference too in how they treat me. They almost treat me like a light skinned or mixed with non black, black woman.

Each culture has its own set of beauty standards, and trends come and go. The "Eurocentric beauty standards" divide people into "ethnic" features and "white" features, which is harmful to people's perception of self. Ideally, we should be able to appreciate features as a diversity of facial functional parts that suits your individual face and reflects your genetic Inheritance. People look the way they do, because they do! We see beautiful people in all cultures, because their features suit their face, irrespective of features. They have a symmetry or a balance, not because of "Eurocentric" features....

Hi, I really like your channel and I agree with alot of the points you made. While I do agree that if a feature is on a black person it is inherently a "black feature" I think the thing people take issue with is that only certain black features are acknowledged as being beautiful or marketable to a broader audience. And while I agree that those women who have those features should not be forced to defend the opportunities that they are granted, I think its important to question why only they seem to be getting the opportunities in the first place. For instance, I think that Beyonce is an extremely talented and hardworking individual who very much deserves her success. But I think it would be disingenuous for us to pretend like the way she looks in no way contributes to the initial opportunities she was given. and while I dont think she should constantly have to defend her success, its okay for people to question the social, political, and historic context that allowed a beyonce to achieve what she has, but has prevented so many equally talented dark skinned women with wider features from achieving that level of success.
@EkaeteB
@EkaeteB Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I agree with your point regarding Beyoncé, but in this video I was speaking specifically about dark skin women. And like I said, I don’t think it’s fair to ask darker skinned women who already are low in numbers with fewer opportunities to give up or question those opportunities, as I said that lies on the platforms and spaces. What you’re talking about is a different discussion. For lighter skinned women like Beyoncé and mixed race people like Zendaya, then sure, at this point in time they are oversaturated and over represented, so yes, it would be great to see them to turn down roles/opportunities or use their influence and privilege to put their darker skinned counterparts on and we’ve seen that happen a few times. And I think the discussions around this topic occur far more than the ones about diversifying the popular dark skin bw look

I love the point you made about east and north women with "eurocentric features" being kinda excluded for their proximity to whiteness. those features are indigenous to africa, the black identity is mostly western and I respect the meaning generated by afro- descendants in the western world. I know the intersections can become a little messy... some north african families have siblings that would classify as different races in America. also afro-arabs exist (imagine Sudan) and are usually darker than indigenous north africans lol. there is a saying in Ethiopia where if a girl is lighter, she can get away with unattractive features/ nobody notices her unattractive features, while a darker girl needs to really have beautiful features to be noticeable. its crazy how you (in the uk?) and them detect the same phenomena. my favourite thing in the world is seeing foreign people favour the plain janes of a post colonial phenotype. the people around them are always so confused, but those foreigners can really appreciate the indigenous, undeniably x phenotype. it really makes me believe in the saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder..."

North Africans really aren't black at all, and that's very debatable that some East African groups are given the high degree of Eurasian admixture in parts of East Africa. So while it's true that every feature that's on a black person is a black feature, it's really dependent on who you consider to be black. Taking Rihanna as an example, it's a bit foolish to say green eyes and yellow skin are black features just because some people claim that she's a black woman. Truth is, Rihanna is a multiracial woman with black, white and hybrid features. There really is such a thing as a typical West African phenotype, that doesn't mean that all West Africans have exactly the same set of features or that only West Africans have them but there's clearly an average West African look and not many individual outliers who don't owe some unusual features to external admixture or artificial transformation. And arguing that black people can look like anything really serves to justify the erasure of the typical and unambiguous West African phenotype in favor of mixed women or even Caucasian and Asian "blackfishers" or more accurately "mixedfishers" as the standard for "black beauty".

Also, people of North Africa have mixed with different ethniticies over the centuries, but they are African, since many such as the Amazigh, have always lived in Africa. The reason being, Narrower features are an adaptation to cooler or mountainous Regions, outside of the hotter savannahs or desert conditions in parts of Africa. Narrow features evolved to warm cooler air through the nose, and to minimise frostbite on lips, once they were "smaller" or "thinner". Yes, yes, yes! African features are so varied : if you look at people from Western Africa, you can see such a diversity of nose shapes, fullness of lips, face shoes etc, just as you see diversity in Europeans. It is such a lazy way to stereotype people. If Eurocentric features were considered instant beauty, then every single European person would be 10 or 10 +. Exactly, many Europeans do not have small noses, and many have fuller lips. Another point is Far Eastern Asian have been considered beautiful by many cultures, and they do not have "Eurocentric" features. You can see the popularity of "cats eyes" make up, to create an almond shape, which is not a "Eurocentric" feature. Finally, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so most people are " normal /average", which is a good thing! Everyone had unique attractiveness, otherwise the human race would have died out, eons ago!

What you're trying to avoid is featurism. Just like colorism anything that is closer to white is deemed as beautiful. So yes pointing out people's aversion to presenting black women with round noses and full lips is a form of featurism. Just because some black women are naturally light skin doesn't mean we can't point out that light skin women are seen as the standard of black female beauty.

I hear black women describing other black women as “white women dipped in chocolate” and think that is so insulting. I also appreciate that you don’t pretend that all lighter skin people are universally considered attractive. I have heard people say Rhianna is ugly because of her huge forehead. I think the fact that she acts unbothered by the criticism makes a lot of people like her more. Not everyone bases who they find attractive on the same factors. Despite light skin and a looser hair texture I think Tracey Ellis Ross is highly unattractive. I know a lot of people who feel the same way. TER is funny though and you mentioned how it’s different in comedy. On the other hand I think her mother Diana Ross who is darker skin is drop dead gorgeous. Now Gabrielle Union is darker skin and eyes and she’s prettier than Rhianna to me.

I wouldn't go around saying that but denying featurism is like saying colorism isn't real. Most of the light skin women we find attractive have thinner noses. And the ones we debate about have rounder features like Ella Mai.

Completely agree with all the points that you have raised. I think you have put your perspective across in the most respectful, kind and eloquent way (making sure not to inadvertently offend - it shows your care as a person) even though it is a difficult subject matter. I am a ‘black’ person with less melanin, a small ‘button’ nose but full lips and closer to 4c hair. For this I never grew up being appreciated like many assume (I was in a predominantly ‘white’ area - in London) often ridiculed for the size of my lips (some members of our community (boys) would take part in that ridicule but it was mainly ‘white’ people who would highlight their size and how wide my mouth was when I laughed as well as making fun of my general appearance; likening me to unappealing, odd or scary looking film characters, famous men and masculine figures - even though I am and have always been a woman) no one would speak about my hair or say anything about it directly (that I can recall) but I started to observe for myself that many bi-racial women I knew that had a similar tone of skin to me but a different hair texture (looser and longer) from my perspective would receive a different treatment and appreciation even if (from a critical standpoint) they were objectively ‘less attractive’. So from my experience as someone with less melanin but a more kinky hair texture, deep brown eyes and full lips - I think texturism as well as partial featurism was definitely a factor in my appearance not being appreciated as I grew up and into my later years. It is only now I am young women (in my early 20’s) that more people seem to appreciate my appearance but often it tends to only be vocalised when my hair is conditioned in a certain way and looks more defined; when my hair is in its most natural form and the pattern is less prominent I think others struggle to see the same beauty in me that is still there. Because of how western standards of beauty have been enforced on us I think Texturism has been a barrier to other people recognising my beauty as easily. As, if I had looser hair and possibly smaller lips I think it would be easier seen and appreciated. In a similar way I think that women within our community who have more melanin; for them I think it is a deeper, richer skin tone that has been a barrier to other people recognising the beauty that is there. In both instances because of the indoctrination people have to fight through each ‘barrier’ to see the beauty that is present. I agree with you that a lighter skinned person has more leeway to be less attractive and a richer toned person seemingly has to be flawless for their beauty to be appreciated (I too have made this point many times). I also think that strategic western advertising of ‘average’ ‘white’ women (for the most part) being portrayed as stunning and beautiful and only showing the most stunning deeper toned ‘black’ women has deliberately set our bar for appreciation of dark skinned beauty too high and our appreciation of light or ‘white’ skinned beauty too low. I have often wondered if I had darker skin if I would be appreciated at all for how I look; if my features could carry dark skin and still be deemed beautiful (it is a sad and sobering thought - one I have had multiple times). I agree that our community is diverse in skin tone, features and hair textures and all should be appreciated - especially in relation to how dark skinned women of our community are represented in terms of the spectrum of features as well as hair textures - all should be shown on a range and frequency that highlights the true diversity of our community. We are beautiful. Our ‘black’ is beautiful. In all its iterations, spectrums, versions, varieties and variations. Your video is BRILLIANT. Thank you for sharing! It is a topic I have tried to bring up multiple times (possibly on account of my skin tone people have been less receptive to hear it). I agree to an extent. I think sometimes people say soemone has Eurocentric fetures when they clearly dont and cant just accept the oerson is buetiful. but i think you' ve confused some points simply put the European buety standard exists which is based on typical european features. we've all globally been conditioned to measure beuty by this standard. This doesnt mean that other ethnicities dont also poses some of these features. Example afro hair does not fit in the European buety standard, straight wavey or loose texture hair does. However other ethnicities also poses that feature. Just like slim noses are also commonly found in certain parts of aftrica and they too meet the European buety standard and that's why these women are deemed to meet that standard, even tho they may poses other features that dont meet the standard (dark skin, afro hair etc) The more features you have that fit into that European buety standard the more buetyiful u will be seen to be. Most west African women have the least amout of these fetures and are not usually considered buetiful. Yes there are many different features in Africa but typical west african features are not usually seen as attractive.

A thing people are missing with this rhetoric is Africa has more genetic diversity than the rest of the world combined, meaning that africans and direct descendants of africans will come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and this includes 'features'... So yes maybe some features are more common in europe, cause europeans dont have as diverse of a gene pool , but they doesnt make them 'eurocentric'. If an african has it, its an african feature, my people are the blueprint . Also attractiveness was not made by europeans, its something that has evolved, on a global scale anok yai is attractive not cause she looks like a black european, but cause she is attractive, there is symettry and proportions to her face(signal of good genes) and clearness to her skin ,that make the opposite sex wanna mate with her, its just that plain and simple...

Tho I disagree when ppl put Ryan Destiny in the "eurocentric" features space. She is gorgeous and like you said because of that ppl try to find a way to explain it by relying on something outside of "blackness" by using terms like black barbie or will say the person is mixed. The thing is Ryan also has a wide flat nose, but people keep describing her like she has the slimmest nose. Her nose is just smaller. India also looks like an obvious black girl. When you refer to North Africans who are you talking about because most are not even black? East Africans most can tell are Africans people rather argue on the horners.
