Air traffic controllers are people trained to maintain the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic in the global air traffic control system. The position of air traffic controller is one that requires highly specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities. Controllers apply separation rules to keep aircraft at a safe distance from each other in their area of responsibility and move all aircraft safely and efficiently through their assigned sector of airspace, as well as on the ground. ATC personnel have to be perfect in their duties. I worked with ATCs in the Navy and they cannot even take a baby aspirin without being cleared by a flight doc. You have to be so focused. No room for failure, you have the lives of those pilots in your hands.

Alright I know a guy that was an ATC for the USAF, after he got out he got a job as a civvie ATC. According to him being a civvie was much, much more stressful. Traffic at a military base is generally much less than a moderate size civilian airport and most of your pilots are far more knowledgeable, professional, and experienced. Some days being a civilian ATC is just loosely organized chaos. I was a grunt in the Marines so I wouldn't know about any of that firsthand. As long as I had a port-o-john to draw dicks on the walls of I was happy.

The ‘civvie’ (FAA) controller handled these military aircraft after they departed LFI. She issued a clearance back to LFI without any of the in between routing which was most likely east of Norfolk and into the Warning Area for plane on plane training. LFI handed them to Norfolk Approach which then handed them to Washington ARTCC in Leesburg, VA who climbed them east then handed them off to military controllers (who were located outside a Richmond, VA) that handled them within the Warning Area. After their training was over, they were handed off to Washington Center who descended them and gave them to Norfolk Approach who handed them off to LFI. If she was stressed at Clearance Delivery, she’s in a real bad way.

My Dad did that for 20 years. In fact the last USAF tower he worked in was at Langley. He was a CMSGT and lead AFCS squadron NCO by then but still did some regular tower shifts. (This was pre Command Chief).

Stressful? I don't know but the dead person I pulled out of a car last week was a pretty stressful task. Crawling around in a house fire with 70 pounds of gear and zero visibility is pretty stressful knowing the only thing between me and certain death is a plastic facepiece and an air pack. I'm sure there is stress in that tower, but come on.

Easy ... Try it sometime and keep 15 aircraft flying at 180 knots in a traffic pattern and they want to practice a low approach after radar or an ILS approach. Then add other aircraft or other airports with traffic and your might understand. Yes ... It is called flying and do not make to many mistakes in the local control position. It is just real people in airplanes flying around.
