Hey all, so in case you didn't see the announcement video, we launched a new scripted podcast last Wednesday called Extremities. It's all about why and how people live in earth's most isolated and extreme settlements. In season one, we tell the story of Pitcairn Island--a small British territory in the South Pacific with just 50 people. It's 300 miles/500 kilometers away from the nearest other inhabited place, 3000 miles/5000 kilometers away from the nearest city, and 10,000 miles/16,000 kilometers away from its capital city in London. The twist and turns that Pitcairn takes through history and the explanation of why and how Pitcairn still exists today are fascinating, in my biased opinion. Episode 1 is out now, episode 2 comes out tomorrow, and I'd love it if you'd give it a listen. Extremities is available at the following places: Apple Podcasts: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/extremities/id1467292185 Anchor: anchor.fm/extremities Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/3yXc8WTwbZcieQhdr3Y6ao Google Podcasts: www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy9iZWJhNzBjL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Stitcher: www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/extremities Breaker: www.breaker.audio/extremities Overcast: overcast.fm/itunes1467292185/extremities Pocket Casts: pca.st/OW0M Podbean: www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/e7bgg-9466c/Extremities-Podcast RadioPublic: radiopublic.com/extremities-8gKAOL I hope you enjoy! -Sam

I was in a flight from Berlin to Barcelona on May 9th. EasyJet chose to wait out the delay, so we had to sit for three hours in the plane and wait. It sucked, but it got to the point where the pilots offered "tours" into the cockpit where we could ask them what we wanted and take pictures of us "flying" the plane, it was really awesome and saved my day :)

I just want to give a shout out to all the air traffic controllers around the world. I know usually the pilots are the highly praised and cheered (rightfully so), but air traffic controllers are also the unsung heroes for all of us getting safely from point A to B safely which rarely get the credit they deserve. Most of us don't even think about them when flying but they have such a crucial part. This is one of the jobs that is not for everybody, you really must have nerves of steel and very sharp mind to deal with all that stress, pressure and responsibility where even a small mistake could lead to tragedy. I worked as a truck dispatcher for year and a half and it was such a stressful and demanding job so I can't imagine having to deal with planes and keep everything on track.

I'm currently in training to be a controller in the USA, so when I saw this video I was initially skeptical and assumed it would either skimp on depth or explanation, or just flat-out get things wrong. Sam, you did a fantastic job of providing a great overview without getting into needless complexities that would've not only lowered the entertainment value, but likely created room for error. The only thing I wish you had touched on is standard instrument arrivals/departures, which are used to efficiently sequence aircraft landing and taking off in predictable ways. These allow for drastically reduced controller workload in the early and final (most complex) stages of the flight, and therefore higher traffic volume. To continue your traffic sequencing metaphor, they can be thought of as different on and off ramps to the airways. I look forward to seeing what you have in store next.

Oh my god You decided to choose such a complex region for this video A route between Chicago to New York would have ended this video in 5 mins!
@seraphina9855 жыл бұрын
It is a bit simpler due to the lack of political divisions of the airspace but there are still a bunch of people involved in that, mostly due to limitations on both the technology (Radar line of sight limits, radio channel capacity etc) and of course the limitations of the human elements (Air traffic controllers can only handle so many aircraft safely before the limits of what is humanly possible causes unacceptable risks). At minimum you would have the Chicago airport ground, Chicago tower, Chicago TRACON, New York TRACON, and the tower and ground controllers at the NY airport accepting the flight etc. Not sure if there are any other intermediates but the NY area and the Chicago area are most definitely under completely different centres in particular due to the fact both manage a mess of very busy airports. Particularly large ones of course include JFK, LGA, EWR etc on the New York side and ORD and MDW on the Chicago side. The NY ones are particularly complex as they have three very busy airports so close together that their approach paths are inherently in conflict and thus there is constant coordination needed to ensure that only compatible runway sets across all the airports are designated as active etc.

@@seraphina985 There are intermediaries. After Chicago TRACON, they'd be switched to Chicago Center, then Cleveland Center, then New York Center and then into New York TRACON etc. The En Route Centers in the U.S. have a very similar design to the European ones mentioned in the video. (Each split into areas, then split further into sectors).

Seraphina S And that's the job of AT controllers employed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Such a lovely organization... NOT. Actually, all three airports are in the top 10 airports (in the US) in terms of average minutes of delay PER FLIGHT. Chicago-O'Hare, San Francisco Int'l, Boston-Logan, and Philadelphia Int'l are the other major culprits I can remember. I think Denver might be on the list as well (snow in the winter, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes from late spring to early fall). Chicago Midway may be on the list as well.

What I really like about this channel is that if you were to do a survey and ask the average KZbin viewer if they would be interested in detailed video's about the aviation industry, you would barely get any positive results. Yet, because Wendover explains everything so diligently and interestingly, he created interest and therefore an audience of more than 2 million people. Keep going, you're doing great work!

A well presented and satisfying look at the entire overall picture related to Air Traffic Control,perhaps those who complain about Air Port Delays of departure/landings will understand the complexity of this amazing system/ As a fourteen Years experienced A T C Controller, I found this item to be perfectly explained and the best item altogether on what is a complex task. Thank you for the brilliant presentation.

I hope you do one on Flight Dispatchers. So many people don't know we exist, yet we share legal authority over our flights jointly with the Captain, chose the route that you will fly, figure out how much fuel you need, what your performance information is, and then once on the way we are your eyes in the sky keeping the crew updated with information from weather at your destination and alternate, thunderstorms and ATC restrictions enroute, to natural disasters and political unrest. I think we would be a great addition to your aviation portfolio, since so many people think pilots do this on their own.

stupid comment! With or without the EU, those centers have to be settled! Asia has no EU but they're building up a much more efficient network, using AI - which is not the case here, apparently since human decisions are still preponderant - giving their centers the means and rights to monitor air flights above Asia. EU is NOT MANDATORY!

I don't fly much, about 6 times total, so I don't know if this is rare or not. I had a window seat and I was looking out and seen what looked like a missile or an UFO fly past us in the opposite direction. The object was only visible from my window for about 2 seconds, that's how fast it was traveling. The object looked to be about an inch or half inch in length from my view of it from the window. Of course I got a little excited and started telling my wife about it who was sitting next to me. The lady in seat in front of me informed me that it was a plane I seen going in the opposite direction, and since both planes were traveling at about 400/500MPH, that's why the plane was only visible for a brief moment. Man to see that, it makes to realise how fast you're actually going. It's hard to judge just from looking at the ground or above the clouds. That tripped me out!
