Had to add another comment, hope you don't mind. Her wish that all racism would end seemed very heartfelt to me. My connections with people are usually on a person to person basis. And because I allow myself to be open...I have met some of the most sweetest, kindest, creative, funny and truly honest people. So many different cultures. You learn who's okay to speak to and who to back off from. And it all okay. For me, it has been such a healing and joyful experience and continues to surprise me with those I meet. One of the reasons I love this channel is the kind of openness and exploration shared here. Such a beautiful thing.♥

Happened to me also in Russia when a young Chinese girl who was my age at the time rub my skin and thought that the reason my skin is dark is because I was dirty. She eventually found out that my skin color is permanent and has nothing to do with cleanliness. It was an Awakening moment for the young girl and I became a teacher of life.

I haven't watched the video yet but the title reminds me of the story of Oda Nobunaga meeting Yasuke, the Black Samurai (and first non Japanese Samurai). Oda had never seem a Black man and was shocked but fascinated. He thought Yasuke was simply covered in ink, so he had him bathe. When he realized it was truly his skin color, he took him in. They trained him to be a samurai and he became one of Oda's bodyguards. But this happened in the 1600... no one should be question skin today

I have students who do the same thing when I teach and it's not about your skin color. They do not have any arm hair so it's something new for them to experience touching on someone else. In Japan many adults shave their arm hair for beauty.

The more black African we are,the less hair we have, we don't have much arm and leg hair, I personally haven't shave my legs in over a decade, never had to shave or wax my arm hair. It's so fine it's almost non-existent but I will agree that race just means foreign to most Asians & non American African folks. In Africa it's more about culture than race. The racial stereotyping as a negative is not our thing. Culture matters more than race, before institutional racism became the model.

I laughed at the “Skin rubbing” comment. That happened to me many years ago in Laos. I went to the city market with a white coworker and while we were standing at a kios, a middle aged woman started rubbing my skin. I just stood there and said nothing. I was more in shock than anything. That’s was about 20 years. I’m surprised that it’s still happening today in that part of the world.

I have given this some serious thought , because I would like to visit Japan , and even as a visitor , you could run into the situation where I could be in the same situation. My conclusion is not to interpret this action through my cultural lens, and experiences in the United States. Therefore , my reaction would be individualized. If the touching is done in a intentionally lewd manner , than that person will be met with the same reaction , as if I was back in the states. If a person does so out of curiosity , if it is a child , than I would think , this child is learning from an young age there are people who have different skin colors than you , but we are all still human. One thing , I already know about innocent children, like the child mentioned in the video , they are coming to you with prejudice , and hate . They are learning and exploring, the world around them. As for adults , am going to have to learn some conversational Japanese . However , before that need to know what about their culture makes it okay , to go up , to a total stranger without fear or reservation , and make physical contact. I wonder do they do this among themselves , if they spot anything about another Japanese person , that they are curious about. I want to understand there culture , but I want to share mine , and to be able to say , " touching a stranger is unacceptable in my country , and culture. This knowledge hopefully gets taken back to their family friends , and they continue to spread it . If enough African Americans , respond this way , eventually , this information , will become common knowledge in Japan . We must take the stance of correcting this behavior towards us in a positive manner.

@jeff c thanks for your reply , and shedding more light on this issue. I perceive what you said , with the exception of children , that it's almost like having a borderline fetishization with black skin. The other things you mentioned , yes , have run across information about this , and they are not connected to skin touching. Some behaviors of Japanese people , remind of those adults who are considered model citizens , until it's discovered what they are actually , doing behind close doors , etc. Japanese are all culturally indoctrinated into certain cultural standards , that does not explain especially , what goes on in the bedroom , and what in this country would be considered pedophilia , and sexual assault.
