The early 90's had a huge psychedelia revival - it's why the whole Austin Powers thing even happened. This wave came, as usual, mostly from the UK (Stone Roses, Soupdragons, Happy Mondays and many other bands) but didn't really hit the dance floor until Dee-Lite landed like a bombshell.

I love 1:19! You can tell Lex is starting to feel this sick rhythm! This video was unique even back in the day. They had that B-52s vibe that was very 90s post-punk. There weren't a lot of groups going this path at the time, so the groups that did has an almost cult-like following. I STILL dig this sound! This song was actually written and performed in the late 80's and released in 1990. Even then, when it came out everyone was like WTF. It was so retro and had such a great beat that it got airplay on regular pop stations. I was in my 20's then and loved it then as I do now. There were a few years maybe 96-97 when the seventies came back hard, tie-dye everywhere, girls rocking bell-bottoms wearing hairbands and mood rings and chokers. I was just getting ready to get into high school. We spent most of our time at the skating rinks back then and this was one of the most played songs, this Cotton eye Joe and Macarena, oh and Mambo #5 lol.

Historically speaking, Dee lite popped onto the music scene in the late eighties \early nineties; and yes, they had a retro feel. Many European bands at the time were getting nostalgic over 1970's musical styles, such as St. Etienne, Swing Out Sister, and Dee Lite. This when when House music was huge in the UK.

Right on man you’re totally correct sounds very 70s in the 1990s. There was a huge social nostalgia for the 60s and you saw a lot of this expressed in style and in music. at almost 63 I remember, vividly Motown‘s effect on the music of my youth without groov and funk we would not have had half of the enjoyment we had in the 70s without them.

It’s in the style of psychedelic 60’s. The song came out in 1990. The bassist is Bootsy Collins, a superstar bassist, very well known. His bass hook is EVERYTHING in this song and they were lucky to get him!

Although this was recorded in the 90s it was a deliberate throwback to 60s psychedelia but with a more contemporary 'dance' feel. I loved it. 😍 Perhaps one of the first examples of what later was termed, 'retro' that summed up much of 90s culture. I remember thinking back then, the most notable thing about the 90s (in terms of music and culture) was the late 60s/70s.

A classic 90s tune- very original arrangement of samples and live instruments, singing and that wild video. This tune and "Love shack" were massive party tunes in the 90's. It's got a bit of a daisy age hip hop vibe with '70s (maybe '60s) samples. Your reaction to the video I think was similar to mine when I first saw it, from "what the hell is this" to "this is really fun"!
