He's not longing for sobriety, he's lamenting it. "Why can't we not be sober?" He doesn't want to go back to before his addiction, he wants to return to the addiction. "I want what I want." He still desires and defines himself by his addiction. "I am just a worthless liar..." This is a person still very much in the throes of addiction and not ready to give it up. Trust him, he will only elevate you just enough to bring you down.

I was thinking it was the drink/drug saying those things at certain points. "I will work to elevate you just enough to bring you down" 🤔
@richarddukard8989
@richarddukard8989 6 ай бұрын
No, he wants to be sober. “I am just an Imbecile “, “I will only complicate you”. That’s a reflection that he is needlessly complicating the grammar and misusing double negatives to state the obvious, and unable to put his feelings into words because he’s a self-described imbecile.
@dylankerr2411
@dylankerr2411 6 ай бұрын
@@TacomaGirlKelly Yeah, it's definitely a decent interpretation. For me, I don't think you need to anthropomorphize the addiction. It can just be the addict being real about where he is at. He is still so mixed up in the addiction though that it's probably one and the same. When you're in it that deep, what's the difference between what you want and what the addiction wants?
@JustTanya.
@JustTanya. 6 ай бұрын
I've actually felt there was a duality to it. Similar to Metallica's "Master Of Puppets". You've got the addiction bringing you in, seducing you. It's intoxicating (no pun intended). But there's some regret there knowing you're hurting yourself and others around you fighting for that numbing feeling. Like Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb". It will only elevate so far because you're becoming intolerant to it. So, you use more trying to catch that feeling not realizing, or caring, that your body is already saturated with it. You use any more and you'll die in some way or another. It's a vicious cycle of wanting that feeling but also knowing it's ruining you and will eventually cause your death. But for many, that feeling is more real than reality.

As a recovered alcoholic, this song always sounded like the TERROR of having to detox when trying to quit drinking. There is so much doom, fear, and PAIN in you soul. A completely helpless and lonely feeling -CRUSHING GUILT, and horrible hallucinations -a lot like this crazy video. This video won a lot of awards, nothing looked like it before this. It was shocking when it came out in 1993....

They are all seriously amszing albums, though and every one is different. I say Schism or Stinkfist, next! What do you think Amber should absorb, lol. Honestly, her expressions are the best. Try "Pneuma" and "Invincible" from their most recent album "Fear Inoculum", or "Schism" from Lateralus, or "Jambi" from 10,000 days or "Stinkfist" from Aenima. Tool is so deep that everyone sees different things in the music, and across the music. For me personally, I resonate with one of the "character arcs" across the music (and across the albums), described in part by the themes in the following songs (if taken in order): The Pot Stinkfist (once you get past the surface impressions of the song, and figure out the metaphors) Aenima Sober Prison Sex (again, get past the surface and into the underlying pyschology) 46&2 Jimmy 10,000 days Taken as a character arc, these songs tell an absolutely amazing story of personal study and growth of a (probably) fictional Maynard life story, from current state of anger and hate aimed externally as an adult (The Pot, Stinkfist, Aenima), to discovering the inner turmoil (Sober) causing/contributing to that anger and hate, to beginning to recognize the contributing sources of that state (Prison Sex), ultimately admitting his issues and wanting to change (46&2), to finally progressing through change and accepting who he is and what made him (Jimmy and 10,000 Days).

🤘🥰 It's interesting that Amber mentioned grunge because their early album Undertow is said to have a grunge edge to it by some, however the band would disagree. Similarity comes from the root of influences the musicians had with late 70s rock and post punk metal... the big grunge bands and Tool are all about the same age and gen X.

Fun fact: Lead singer Maynard James Keenan is also a winemaker. In addition to a produce market in Cornville, Arizona; Keenan, whose grandparents and great-uncle made wine in Northern Italy, owns Merkin Vineyards and Caduceus Cellars, based in the unincorporated area of Page Springs/Cornville, Arizona, southwest of Sedona, where he resides. He is also a partner of Stronghold Vineyards, "an 80-acre site dedicated to producing affordable wines in the state", located in the small, unincorporated area known as Kansas Settlement in Sulfur Springs Valley, Arizona.

Please watch the O'Keefe foundation cover Tool songs. It's kids playing their asses off, very impressive and heartwarming.

This song was Tool's first big single, and first big music video. I remember seeing it on MTV way back when and it's got pretty cutting edge claymation for the time for sure.

This is why I prefer to stay in my era of music. Nothing today even comes close to what we had back then.

Tool has not done a lot of videos during their career, but there lead guitarist Adam Jones did the art direction for their videos. Before the band formed Adam worked in special effects and makeup for films like Jurassic Park and Terminator

Love the Pensacola shirt 🤘, and TOOL is one of the best bands ever, I've seen them 3 times. See them live if you can.

First time hearing them. I almost get a little Pink Floyd vibe from them. The guitar is haunting. Such yearning in his voice. WOW. Thanks for the introduction. I am going to have to check out the grunge groups. I have heard of Nirvana but I wasn't in a place at that time where I could relate to that type of energy. I will take a dive and see what these poets were trying to convey. I love NIN, and Metallica, so maybe I'm ready for this edgier journey. As a guitarist this guitar is great. Canadian Grandma Lori.
