Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam - In this video, The Foodie TV visited Banh Mi Oanh in the heart of Saigon to eat some Banh Mi. My friend Chef Khai of Prime Boutique Steak & Chill Restaurant discovered this lady when he moved here and it has been his favorite place ever since. She makes an incredible Banh Mi and closes when she sells out. You would never suspect her to have such a delicious banh mi, but it's true and it's a must visit!

What are your favorite Vietnamese foods?

Any random street banh mi in Vietnam beats any 5* yelp rating banh mi in the US. It’s just a bigger part of the food culture over there. 90+ million people eating banh mi 7 days a week from 5AM till 2AM. How you compete with that?

You really can’t… but I think what it comes down to is the bread.. some reason, the bread in VN is just on another level

@@TheFoodieTVReview The bread is one thing. I had a friend who is in the restaurant business. He went to Vietnam to learn the bread making process. He even brought back the flour. He followed the recipe to a T and it wasn't the same. He said something along that the water in Vietnam interacts differently to the water in the US. Also, in Vietnam there are so many varieties of banh mi. Of course you have the standard cha Lua, egg, grilled pork, grilled chicken, meatball. But there's also the roasted pork, bo la lot, fish patties, mackerel, banh bot loc, bread stick banh mi. Then there's the sauce. US version there's hardly any sauce where as in Vietnam there's 1, 2, or 3 sauces that goes in to the banh imi. Even the toppings are more diverse. In the US it's the pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeño. In vietnam, there's yellow peppers, green onions, mint, rau ram, candied dried fish, pepper relish. And the pate and butter are made fresh daily.

Totally agree with you on all of that. Don’t ever think Banh Mi over here in the US can ever match up. Whats your favorite spot in VN for banh mi?

@@TheFoodieTVReview not sure the best, but the best one I’ve had was in Nha Trang. The street is Pham Vang Dong on the north side. A husband and wife sell them morning and afternoon. I would Get the Thap Cam (deluxe special). When you’re heading north, it’s the cart on the left, usually surrounded by locals. When you get to the Laluna resort, you’ve gone too far. It’s a lot better than the Anthony Bourdain’s famous banh mi Phuong in Hoi An.

Will definitely have to add to the list and check out when I visit Nha Trang one day. Thanks for the recommendation!

Huyen Hoa is definitely overrated. Think people like it because the portions are big. Thanks for the recommendation!
