Cracking The Cryptic

2 жыл бұрын

Our book is very close to release - thanks to everyone who supported the Kickstarter. If you still need to order it then you can do so here:
www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
Today's puzzle comes from one of the world's favourite constructors, shye. This one has simple and yet devious rules! And, as ever, shye makes the numbers dance before our eyes. You can give it a try at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits in the first column indicate in which column the digit 1 is placed in the respective row. Digits in the fifth column indicate in which column the digit 5 is placed in the respective row. Digits in the ninth column indicate in which column the digit 9 is placed in the respective row.
PS Episode 5 of Simon attempting to play The Witness should happen on Tuesday evening next week at 10pm UK time. We'll announce it on Twitter (@crypticcracking).
PPS If we manage to reach 400,000 subscribers then we'll be releasing a video where Mark and Simon answer community questions! Please email us at crackingthecryptic@gmail.com if you have a good question for them :)

I, for once, actually caught the swordfish without help. This was a very lovely puzzle for sure. I took a harder, round-about way from Simon. I didn't catch the 3 x-wing. I had worked out the sevens co-ordination by color and once I got to the 1-5 workings in boxes 1 and 2 that would place the 9 and 3 in row one. I then knew where all the sevens went. It's rare I can finish a puzzle and then watch Simon do it more efficiently, usually I need a hint or tip from Simons work.

I think another cool way to use this rule is that each shaded cell in a block has to be a low (123), mid (456) and high (789) digit. That could be a useful info for when we mix this rule with others.

Great puzzle by Shye! Extremely educative solve by Simon. I did solve it before watching and I am proud to say I found the swordfish almost instantly. All in all 37:41 according to the timer. All credit goes to Mark and Simon because of the master classes they have been giving over time. Crowd, we have come a long way. When I started to follow CtC, I would not have spotted a swordfish if someone would have slapped one in my face.

One small bit of logic that I think you didn't cover (because it's completely unnecessary for the solve, but I find it beautiful)- Each box's orange's stripe can effectively only take one of each set {1,2,3}, {4,5,6}, and {7,8,9}. If you took two numbers from the same set, then it would map the corresponding digit into the same box, which is clearly invalid! I used this trick to get some easy digits in box 1 once you got the 7 placed. The only remaining digit in set 1 was 1, and the only remaining digit in set 2 was 5, meaning the orange squares were a 1/5 pair and the green squares were an 8/9 pair (resolvable).
@siorac1147

I couldn't have solved the puzzle without this bit of logic and now I'm really curious to see how Simon did it because the only way I could do it was figuring out that 1 and 5 in column 1 both have to be in box 1.
@marcosharlequin
@marcosharlequin 2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure it is unnecessary for the solve. It is good logic. It makes for an entirely different solve, no way as flashy as the swordfish, but you can slowly plod through the grid methodically using it, and get to the answer.

This was a weird race for me... I got mostly the same time as Simon, 30:17 (he must have been a little faster since the intro is so long) but coming back to watch, by the time I had most of the grid solved (~20 minutes) he seemed to be barely starting, after his huge swordfish-xwing debacle, techniques I didn't use at all to solve... Yet once he was done logicing the places 7s couldn't go, I see him cut through the rest of the puzzle like a red hot knife through third grade butter. Really made me appreciate how elegant this method of solving is, and how much of what I do is still essentially brute forcing, this channel is always pushing me to improve my skills ^^

@amoswittenbergsmusings
@amoswittenbergsmusings 2 жыл бұрын
There is no obvious reason why not. The entire indirection concept opens the floodgates for puzzles in which cell values do double duty: they eliminate themselves from row, column and box, *and* their potential target cells serve to restrict their index cell. You could vary the indexing method and perhaps even use double indexing in some form. My head spins. All these sudoku variants take the place of non-given given digits. Who could have thought that so much about sudoku still remains to be discovered? I ought to check out the discord server one of these days. I'm just afraid it would leave me no time for secondary things like eating and sleeping.

The most interesting thing about this puzzle is that it's completely logically solvable without using the swordfish. I am still new to the advanced sudoku world, and I spotted the swordfish right away and then... just stared at it for a while thinking "I know Simon taught me what to do next, but I can't remember...." Eventually I found a logical path on the left (1s column), then solved the right before the center, and followed it up outside in. Simon, meanwhile, had a much more efficient path using the swordfish, and went right left center, then inside out. Brilliant puzzle.

the immediate Swordfish on 7's was very neat, i personally like to call it a "reverse Swordfish" logic since we get it using the 159 triple in C7 which is a sort of reverse way to work out that 7's are the constrained digit. 😂 and yes my brain was also scrambled on my solve, it took me 34mins to complete it when really 15mins of those was spent figuring out how the ruleset worked. :D

Strongly agree. I love this channel but seeing him ignore the ruleset repeatedly through the solve got old pretty fast. Felt like he was really off his game today.

@@steliosmamatas2970 I think it has been fairly well established by now that Simon's seemingly normal glasses are actually part of a VR set. And that Sven has modified the software so that the cells immediately near Simon's mouse pointer get turned completely invisible to him, along with the cells at the start and end of the same row/column. 😉

This was fun to solve! And it helped me a lot this time to use (Goodliffe-style) crowded pencil markings and then eliminate them in order to solve the puzzle quickly.

14:24 That is one of the fastest solves I've ever done. I, honestly, didn't even see the swordfish until I watched the video. As others have mentioned, I found the relationship between high, mid, and low numbers pretty early on and it made the puzzle quite a bit easier.

Really cool use of swordfish. Isn't it a bit more powerful than Simon seemed to think? He only used it to eliminate sevens from rows, but doesn't it also eliminate sevens from columns? This isn't usually a consideration with swordfishes, because you FIND a swordfish by first eliminating the digit from either rows or columns, but in this case he'd done neither, and found the swordfish via a 159 triple. So couldn't he have solved the sevens a bit more easily if he'd looked at eliminating them from the columns?

Only 56 minutes! I think that means I'm improving! It is still almost twice their time, but a few minutes less. I'll take it! lol, I'd rate this halfway between their GAS puzzles and a normal puzzle for difficulty. Very approachable, but you have to be careful with your thoughts. Thanks for a fun time!

This puzzle had some really enjoyable breakthroughs for me. Didn't do swordfish or x-wing highlight, but instead highlighting where 159 could not be placed.

It took me 1 hour and 11 minutes but I'm proud of myself because I usually can't do the puzzles. Though I must admit that I had to watch the video until Simon spotted and explained the swordfish and then I finished it on my own 😁

It scrambled my mind. I attempted this puzzle a few times and failed. I then watched Simon do it and I can't believe I didn't figure it out. Simon is so good at explaining his logic.. but then forgets his own logic :) 7 got pencil marked into a green box, which he had just explained couldn't be a 7! Simon you amaze and frustrate me at the same time!

I saw this cool puzzle that I think you would like on logic masters called Ten Knight. It is rated 95% and is a five star difficulty. It has a knights move restriction and all the killer cages are ten, it looks very hard and impossible to me but it’s been solved 47 times.

Classic Simon. 'We can think more about other things', while hovering over the given 7 that disambiguates the rest of the swordfish, that's now an x-wing, disambiguating the other x-wing into the bargain :-)

an amazing puzzle, took me about half an hour (had to take a break to do something else so not sure about the exact time) and I actually solved it using the same techniques but finding results in a different order which is fascinating to me. I actually got the 7 in the middle of the grid first after I saw the swordfish rather than the top left one (dont remember how i did it tho :p). Had lots of fun and its definitely approachable but challenging, seeing that this was my first puzzle of this type

Oh dear, looking at the comments I see swordfish and coloring were in this video. I never stopped to consider those. Took me 37 minutes, maybe double what I do one of the GAS puzzles in. Seemed easy enough with the clues bouncing back and forth. Maybe spotting a swordfish would have sped that up a bit, I don't know.

Additional logic that can be taken out of it is that you can split entire 1-9 number set into 3 subsets (123, 456, 789) which can never be in the same box in columns 1/5/9. What Simon said about 2 in box 4 is an example of this principle (once you have 3 in box 4 in column 1, you cannot place 2 next to it in the same column, it has to be either in box 1 (which it can't) or box 7). But it's more general, and can lead to solution much faster, when used everywhere it can be.
