Personally I think you should first write a character and then decide their gender. If you start with the gender, many writers tend to fall into stereotypes.

@Catra do you even realize how hard they had to fight for an action show for girls. How hard they had to fight to have She-Ra to have her look they based her build on Olympic athletes. They had to make compromises to have the original She-Ra show get made. The 80s show isn't perfect it has its flaws, but you can tell, they really cared about this show, they put in a lot of hard work. They wanted to-do more but cartoon for girls didn't get as much respect as cartoons whete the target audience was boys.

They whined about it, so no She-Ra throws roundhouse kicks instead. The original show was made as a joined project between Filmation and Mattel; the original He-Man was entirely made by Mattel; but seeing the success of He-Man and that plenty of girls were watching it, Filmation came with the original idea to Mattel to make a female version of He-Man, which they did eagerly without hesitation. The main issue there is that the women working in Mattel's girls toys, including Barbie, hijacked the project away from the Masters of the Universe team, which is why the dolls look so fundamentally different from the rest of the Masters of the Universe line and the cartoon. Something the MotU managed to enforce though, was the same size of the dolls of the MotU line; to make sure size wize they would fit with all the vehicles, buildings, and other action figures, so brothers and sisters could play together. The women at Mattel first wanted to make the dolls bigger than their MotU counterparts, producing a complete missmatch.

I think videos like these really highlight how far character design in animation has gone. It’s not just “Barbie silhouette with slight adjustments in hair and clothes” for women anymore, and the men aren’t always broad-shouldered and muscular, with defined cheekbones and small eyes anymore. Each character can now be identified by their silhouette (even if you just had their base and not hair/clothes). A lot of progress has been made, and as an artist, it’s even more dynamic/visually appealing when characters don’t have “same body syndrome”.

@YoK-uz2vx that makes perfect sense. Cartoons were created with having a toy line in mind. It's also easier and cheaper to animate. The old series is full of recycled animation like the transformations are always the same and certain moves and scenes are the same. As a kid in the 80ies I didn't mind that, I liked the story line and always having some positive message or lesson at the end. I suppose that's where I got my values from because I didn't have parents who were able to give me any insight or assistance in where my life should go. I was raised by tv literally. She made Fun of Tongue Lasher Name (you're sitting in a Glasshouse there, Catgirl) and beat this giant Reptile in a matter of Seconds, which even CBR found disappointing, and they normally praise this Show like the second coming of Jesus! She-Ra never even got to fight Hordak, because everything always has to be about Catra. I found her kinda cool at first, but eventually she became such a boring, invincible Character that has no right to be as arrogant as she is.

An adult a child like me was able to look up to. Could ride long before she was she ra and didn't call spirit horsey! Becomes the leader of the resistance when she turns sides. New show: they live in a palace till the last series to plan their battles and each character is clearly very well-fed.despite the situation. Old series; scenes of devastation and famine as a result of war often shown. The resistance hides in the whispering woods because the entire planet is under hordaks control. They live in tents and get their own food from the forest. Only madame raz seems well nourished. Beyond that, they all have a warriors physique. A physique gained with daily training and battle. Who woulda thunk it that a planet wide war, coupled with daily exercise and limited food would make you a certain shape. 🙄

I like how a lot of the new characters have obvious ties to the older designs, like colour schemes or reworked features (Catra for example). The 80s version looked very much like it belonged in the 80s, the characters all share very similar traits. Because of He-mans origins as a toy I don't think that's necessarily a huge fault, and I'm probably biased, but I love the newer redesigns. I really admire in media when you can differentiate characters from their silhouettes and for many SPOP characters you can!

Honestly it came close to a tie for me on which One was better but at the same time there really is no comparing the original was just amazing and creative it may have been old and outdated but I still love it the music the passion the Adventures in this new version it’s more just one drama after another I still love it of course but there is no comparing the first is definitely the winner out of the two!!❤️❤️👏👏 I love the original She-Ra who else agrees with me on this?

Have to say, even though the new designs are somewhat simplified, most of them are definitely an improvement. And much more variety in body types and shapes, the originals are so similar (just with different costumes).

It's cause the old designs were based on toys (so the models were more rigid and less expressive) while the new ones are actually made for animation (so they are more dynamic and expressive even if they lost "details")

Sorry this is late, but a) Light Hope’s original appearance doesn’t really fit the name, and b) Double Trouble is distinctly a non-binary character in the reboot, and their original appearance wears a skirt and heels, has an hourglass figure and distinct boobs, and is all-around very feminine. I haven’t seen the original, but I’d guess their old voice is also very feminine

How can people actually say the originals looked better these characters were made for the show, with actually looking good in mind, the original was made in the mind of selling toys that’s why all the princess practically look the same because they all had to be made from the same doll mould.
