She's extremely depressed, having breakdowns, and willing to do whatever will end the pain, including dying. I also realized that if scorpia dont even know what friendship even is, as she says in the episode, Then catra clearly dont know what friendship is either. so ofc she dont know much of how to act towards scorpia, a person that is disregarding her personal space every second she gets. I love how far this season pushes its characters. Mosco is clearly done with Catra while still feeling sympathy for Glimmer, while other channels like Letts React were done with Glimmer but still felt sympathy for Catra. It’s really interesting what crosses the line and I can’t wait to see how those feelings evolve
@TheCanderemy

I think the reason why I (and Letts React) sympathize more with Catra is because Catra never actually had a good example of what a healthy relationship was. Even when Adora was around, Shadow Weaver manipulated that relationship so hard that it was a complicated mess. And we've seen through multiple examples that whenever Catra tries to be kind or open up, she gets punished for it. Glimmer, on the other hand has a good support system and genuine healthy friendships. Not saying that her trauma is irrelevant, but its just so much harder to watch her go to Shadow Weaver and slowly become this obsessed version of herself when her friends are RIGHT there and she KNOWS IT. To me, she is choosing to be this cold person despite knowing and experiencing first hand the strength in friendship while Catra is choosing to be this cold person because it is the only way she knows how to be and is rewarded for being (even if it is temporary).

@@TheCanderemy I sympathise with Glimmer more because she's still dealing with the grief of losing her mother while having to act as the leader of both her kingdom and the rebellion while still a teenager. She feels responsible for freeing not just her kingdom, but the ENTIRE PLANET from the Horde's control after she's just lost her mother, and her father is presumably died fighting the Horde when she was very young. Glimmer believes that she's an orphan in charge of a kingdom, an entire rebellion and saving a planet. She is making a lot of mistakes! But that's happening because she's has the pressure of saving literally everyone from the Horde on her shoulders. When Mermista lost her kingdom, Glimmer sees that as her fault because she's the leader of the rebellion. Her friends are there, but she has responsibilities as queen that they don't, so she feels somewhat disconnected from them at this time. And she does realize she's making mistakes and tried to make up for them much faster than Catra tries to make up for hers. Catra literally took part in taking over Mermista's kingdom! Catra is taking part in the imperialist takeover of an entire planet, and not as a foot soldier, but as a leader in a war that is taking people's homes and lives! Yes, Catra has faced abuse and abandonment in the Horde, but it doesn't excuse conquering kingdoms. She rejected the chances that Adora and Scorpia gave her to leave. She had legitimate reasons connected to her trauma that led her to stay instead of walking away, but she still made that choice and has to be responsible for her choices. Glimmer is coming from a place of trying to save people, as misguided as she may be. As legitimate as Catra's reasons for acting selfishly are, she's still choosing to be a WAR CRIMINAL.

When it comes to Catra there's two sides to the argument. The first side is that Catra has done too many awful things to deserve any sympathy. She's driven away everyone that cares about her, burned virtually every bridge and is beyond redemption. The second side is that whilst that is all true, the explanation for why she is like that is there in the show. She is a pitiable character, damaged and vulnerable. She hates herself, thinks she's worthless and acts in the way she has been taught by externalising her self hatred. She is an unsympathetic character but there is the seed of potential to change if she wants to and that is enough to maintain hope that eventually she could be a better person. This episode shows three contrasting but complimentary stories. Scorpia on the road to redemption and finding new potential friends, Catra with everything she ever wanted yet with nothing she needs and Glimmer pushing away her friends. There's parallels here. Many people feel that Catra is beyond redemption and that's a valid position to have. But I think Catra is popular because many people struggle with feelings of self hate and worthlessness. They see their own inner turmoil in her and empathise. To many people Catra represents them, flawed, vulnerable and largely pitiful. I am one of those people. I really hope Mosco can see that in her by the end of the series. It's fine if not but for those wondering why Catra is many people's favorite character (myself included) I hope that gives you an understanding of why people feel that way. And yes it's tough to hear Mosco hating on Catra because it feels in a way oddly personal. Not Mosco's fault of course but when you identify with a character that much it's uncomfortable to hear the hostility no matter how justified it is.

So, I've been trying to not comment about Catra too much in these comments because there's a lot of spoiler stuff in there. I'm going to try to give you my two cents, but also I don't think you're wrong about Catra right now. The thing that I disagree with is the idea that Catra doesn't know what kindness is. She does. She's familiar. For her, it is often a prelude to disappointment, to punishment, or to loneliness. Adora left her. Shadow Weaver left her. Scorpia left her. Anyone who she has been kind to, or who has been kind to her, leaves her. She has a reason to be as difficult as she is. EDIT: to clarify, that doesn't necessarily justify her current behavior, but I think it is worth remembering that Catra is a literal child soldier abandoned by just about everyone she ever cared about. She's making terrible choices. I fully agree. But she's not in much of a position to do any better.

So here's my take on Catra. Compare her to Jinx from Arcane. If you never saw how Jinx came to be the way she is, no one would be rooting for her or be forgiving. We feel for her, we want her to be okay, despite all of the terrible things she does, because we've seen so much of what made her who she is. But if you hadn't, all you would see is a murderous psychopath. With Catra, we see a sliver of it, and we get a lot of implications, but we don't get the wind knocked out of us by it in the same way. Catra was the child of abuse at the hands of Shadow Weaver, while Adora was her favored child. We saw one flashback where we see a hint of this abuse being much more than just verbal, but the show isn't able to go as hard as Arcane did with Jinx. Just like Jinx, it doesn't excuse her actions, but I think if we witnessed every moment of Catra's abuse we would all have much more hope for her to heal those psychological wounds.
@vilmublues752

Catra talks about learning to predict when Shadow Weaver would strike at one point, so yeah there is the implication she has been hit a lot but they couldn't really openly show it in the show. Instead, they show Shadow Weaver physically restraining Catra with her magic which is shown to be painful, and generally looming over her and otherwise touching her roughly and intimidatingly. And yeah, that flashback in which SW actually threatened to kill her. Important to keep in mind that Adora was abused too, just in a different way.

Of course, the thing about Catra is that at this point in the story, she is very aware she is in the wrong. And not in the "I'm the villain" in the wrong, but like, she has lost all the people she has ever cared about, the power she thought she wanted is meaningless to her, and she knows, absolutely, that she has made a huge mistake. But as much as she knows how much in the wrong she is, as much as she hates this isolation she has created, at this point she as NO idea how to fix it. So she just wallows in misery Glimmer has also had a parallel arc of slowly isolating herself from everyone after gaining a position of power, but in contrast to Catra, at this point Glimmer doesn't realise she is in the wrong. She still things she is right, and everyone else is being unreasonable. Which is a really interesting contrast. The horrible disaster that is Catra is getting even worse, and is aware of it and wants to stop but doesn't know how, while goody Glimmer is getting worse with her stubborn nature and her complexes about her queenship, but is blind to it. Fascinating stuff

So, Catra was systematically subjected to psychological and physical abuse from childhood. She was constantly brainwashed. She didn’t have a single example of healthy human relationships before her eyes, all she saw was: whoever is stronger is right, and any emotional attachments are vulnerability. The only society that is familiar to her is a military dictatorship. The only aspect of the value of human life that she encountered was purely utilitarian - you are needed while you are useful. And specifically in her case: she is only alive at all because she is dear to her best friend. That was expressed directly to her more than once, and not by anyone, but by her mother figure. Have I forgotten anything? It seems not... Now let's think together: how did it happen that Catra is constantly overwhelmed by extremely ambiguous and conflicting emotions? Especially to someone in particular ;). Afraid (and doesn't know how) to show emotional affection? Why does she alienate herself from those around her? What's wrong with her? She must be a bad person (no) :)

One thing that people don't remember much I guess are the actual events of the first season, taking the first 2 episodes along with promise it kind of paints Adora into a self absorbed oblivious POS in how she acts with Catra. She left to go on her personal jaunt to get the sword, promising she would be back and no one would notice. The thing is SW did notice and with what we know about SW and Catra's relationship, SW most likely abused Catra off screen at that point, a time when Adora was not around kinda fracturing their promise. For Catra to find Adora and to find out that she left her to SW to have a party with her new friends, basically broke their relationship right there. After that Catra was just acting how she was taught, under constant threat of torture if she didn't do as told. Also: fuck Lonnie, the first time we see her after Adora leave she threatens Catra saying "Adora wasn't around to protect her anymore", they were never friends.

To answer your question about Catra, I think that most of the people who say she's their favorite character say that not because we think she's the morally best character or a role model. We're perfectly aware that she doesnt act like a good person and is actually pretty toxic. When we say that she's our favorite character, we mean that we think her character is written masterfully, displaying some attributes that some of us can relate to or experienced firsthand and that it is executed in such a way that it makes sense, and adds so much to the plot and emotional weight of the characters. It is really fascinating to see how her character develops and how it just makes sense. She was like a puzzle when i first watched the series, getting to know how she acts, justifies, and feels-- her past and her environment.. she's just fun to watch and to think about and her entire plot/character is one of the things that sets this show apart from other similar shows imo, especially with her being the 2nd main character we get to see both sides of the conflict in an episode. Not all of us are morally perfect all the time like Adora and Bow or like Glimmer. I think Catra represents what happens when we give in to the worst parts of ourselves and how we spiral from worse to worst. And its not like the show is rewarding her behavior either, she's losing friends left and right and makes it clear the toll this has on her sanity and well-being. The way the show handles it, she isnt acting evil for the sake of being evil, which just is realistic. Does that mean she gets a pass? No, but it does make you think that she has the potential to change and thats what a lot of people are hooked on too. The show tears Catra down and when you're on rock bottom.. well you know the rest.

Catra is an amazing character. At the start it's just because she's a devilishly fun villain to watch just be the worst, but over time it grows far beyond that. They don't pull any punches with her. She's similar to Azula in Avatar but unlike Azula, Catra's arc doesn't just stop half way through it. One of the reasons I adore this series so much, and Catra and Adora's story in particular, is it's about the importance and the power of selfless empathy. Can't really say anything more than that without it being spoilers, but the core lesson of their story is incredibly powerful.

Did my best to make this spoiler free, only talking about things that have already happened and saving the future stuff for later. Catra is… an interesting character, to say the least. But there are some details that I would like to add to hopefully clarify more about Catra’s character. From what I’ve gathered about the show and the hints it has given, it seems like Catra was taken into the Horde as an infant after Hordak invaded her home, as with most of the children raised into soldiers (Adora was a slight difference, but she was still taken from her home and turned into a weapon). She wouldn’t remember any of that, she was too young, but the environment she was plopped into from infancy is the more important part of that. From birth, essentially, Catra has had it drilled into her head that she only exists because she makes Adora happy. Like she’s a toy, an object. Shadow Weaver and Hordak inadvertently taught her that the world runs on manipulation, violence, pain, and strategy. She’s taken those skills to heart in order to survive. I think, initially in season 1-3, Catra was toying around with Adora. Yes, she had intentions of moving up in the Horde, but she had this playful obsession with Adora, like she needed to one-up her. She wanted her friend back, but at the same time, needed to get back at Adora like an angry sibling for leaving her behind. When the portal was opened and Catra let herself fall into the abyss, she came back corrupted. The worst version of herself, full of anger and pain and confusion. The unhealthiest part of her entire character. And when the portal closed and Catra realized that Adora wasn’t playing anymore, I think she kind of realized that she went too far. But instead of backing down and doing the right thing, she instead dug herself deeper with the mentality of “Well, I’m unredeemable now. I’m the villain. So I might as well do my worst. That’s all I’m capable of now.” She modeled her outfit after her corrupted design, showing how she’d embraced her worst parts, almost in a moment of numbness. She had nightmares of what she had done, of betraying those she’d loved, of seeing their pain and anger, and took to heart that they all hate her and will never forgive her. She’s the bad guy now. The way she flinches every time the portal, Entrapta, Adora, Shadow Weaver, or Scorpia are mentioned shows how deeply it all affected her. Her instinctual reaction to fear is FIGHT. Every time she feels afraid, she gets aggressive and violent. And since the end of season 3, she had been consistently afraid and in pain, trying to snuff it out and be the bad guy she “knows” she is now. She’s dug herself too far down, and now nobody’s willing to lend her a hand. So she might as well dig deeper, either that or… something much darker. And I think she’s been thinking about the other option more and more as the season goes on. She doesn’t like this. She doesn’t like being this. But she has to be. It’s all she knows now. Shadow Weaver only saw the worst in her, Adora has lost faith in her, and Hordak is encouraging all of her negativity with the notion of “success”. She’s achieving success. So why does it hurt so bad? Why is she feeling like this? This is who she’s supposed to be, she’s winning, she’s at the highest she can be in the Horde, she’s beating the rebellion, she’s besting Adora, so why is she in so much pain? When does the pain stop? It hurt before, but it’s supposed to be going away, right? She wants the numbness, the lack of conscious that she needs to be the villain, and as much as she plays up that facade, it isn’t genuine. Why? That fear is driving her into insanity. The bags under her eyes, the messy hair, the outbursts of rage, the voice breaks, the sobbing uncontrollably because of how thoroughly unhappy she is with her entire situation. She wants to change, but doesn’t *want* to want to change. So she bounces back full-force with deflection, defensiveness, and obsession. Her voice actress does amazing, because there are times when you can hear the quiver in Catra’s voice where she temporarily loses a grip on her emotions. Just try to analyze her a little more rather that let the dislike for her character put a haze over your eyes, you know? I know sometimes reactors, when they don’t like something, they tune out that something like it’s no longer important, and end up missing *a lot* of information about that something. And around this point in the season, it’s very important to not do that, because a lot is starting to slowly come out of Catra. That’s just my take on it though, but I hope it helped at least a little

I have to say.. I am abit surprised about the absolute disregard for what catra have gone through but sympathy for literally everyone else. I mean The show have been pretty clear on how messed up catra been treated and abused her entire life. I know all opinions are valid of course. but it still hurts. Especially as catras destructive behavior comes from self-hate and the view she have that she is worth less than the dirt she walks on resonates with a lot of people that have suicidal thoughts, depression and bearers of deep, deep traumatic scars from child abuse to being literally in this moment, a child solider where no one on your own side cares about you. I always think on how catra sees the situation. Her abuser, her tormetor that have literally hurt her emotionally and physically since she was a baby, joined the"good guys" and is accepted with more compassion than she have experienced her entire life. It is interesting that Glimmer's mother prepared her very well for when she was gone, to the point that Glimmer has slid easily into the role and responsibility of being a queen, including being frustrated at the same things she herself used to do. Compare this to the closest thing to a mother figure Catra had, who not only did not prepare her, but did absolutely everything she could to prevent her from being an effective adult. Consequently, Catra, who had no problem whatsoever with the fighting side of things, now has absolutely no clue what to do when she gets even that taken away from her. All she can literally do is regress into almost childlike tantrums. Two people, doing what they were taught to do by their parents or guardians, both falling apart in frustration, in two completely different ways.

And it's understandable that he got angry considering him and Adora have been trying to explain why activating the weapon is a bad idea the entire episode, but Glimmer, among all of the pressure she's been experiencing and also being under the influence of Shadow Weaver's manipulation, refused to listen.

I loved Frosta in this episode. "I didn't join the rebellion to fight; I joined to save people - and the Horde, even after everything, are people." That's such a fantastic line! That, and the way she connects with Scorpia and shows her genuine kindness for possibly the first time in Scorpia's life, really made me wish Frosta had gotten more screen time throughout the show. To play devil's advocate re: Catra: I can't really blame her for being as toxic as she is. As we saw in _Promise,_ she's been told she's a troublemaker, a villain, the 'bad guy', since she was a small child. Every time she's tried to be any different, she's been actively punished for it (e.g. opening up to Scorpia about Shadow Weaver escaping under her watch, only for it to almost get her killed. Lesson learnt: letting people in is lethally dangerous - push everyone away so that can't happen again). Every time she was ruthless and cruel, she moved up the ranks - which she's been conditioned to equate with survival. She's being a terrible, and hurting everyone around her, and I can't condone a single one of her actions, but like... I _understand_ why she's like that.

"I mean, what's Shadow Weaver's goals and wants?" Oh, that's easy: power. Shadow Weaver wants all the magical power she can possibly hoarde. She landed at Mystacor because that's where all the top sorcerers go; she went to Hordak because he had an actual Runestone that she could get access to; she adopted Adora because she knew about Adora's magical potential (which involves spoilery things I shall not discuss). This motivation even drives all her interpersonal relationships. She doesn't see others as people - they're either tools to be used to further her own quest for power (Micah, Adora, Glimmer) or detritus to be discarded (Catra, basically anyone else she doesn't have a use for). As for why? There I cannae help you. Her reasons aren't discussed at any point. My guess, however, is that it's most likely the simplest reason of all: _What you can control can't hurt you._
@vilmublues752
@vilmublues752 8 ай бұрын
True, but it's also interesting how she seemed to have a bit more genuine care for Micah, in a way she doesn't seem to have for anyone else. The _one_ time she appeared to be truly genuine with Catra she told her that she wasn't born with power and needed to fight hard to earn it and basically said "I had to struggle, why shouldn't you?" She also felt the higher-up sorcerers never listened nor trusted her. So I think she both felt weak in her past and that she did not fit in, but like you said we don't know the full details about her past.

The fact, that catra makes you so frustrated, means the writers achieved their goal. That makes a great character. Catras journey so far has been a constant downwards spiral, alianating, hurting and rejecting everyone, that ever cared in the slightest for her. That doesnt make her less of a Bword, it just explains her behaviour and reactions to other people.

this has to be clarified. first and most, they are in a war, which has lasted up to 2 years soon 3 years. Catra clearly stated that she wasn't looking for friends, even tho scorpia kinda forced herself to be her friend. She is second in command (she is also the villain) her Character is meant to be bitchy, self destructutive character. that's why some like her and they relate to her

A lot of people like catra because of the trauma that she has gone through, catra has had so much abuse towards her and when some people get abused they turn into a abuser when they get older and that's what has happened with catra , every since the beginning of the show she has been on a downward spiral with her worse point being the setting the portal off but if you look at the events before that it makes sense, at the end of season 2 she tried really hard to keep shadow weaver not getting sent to beast island and even let her guard down to her and instead shadow weaver used the opportunity to escape and because shadow weaver escaped hordak sent catra to die in the Crimson waste and catra actually took control of the Crimson waste and was having fun but then she learned that when shadow weaver escaped she went right to adora which just cemented the point that shadow weaver always favored adora and it set catra over the edge, and for all the bad stuff catra has done she is getting those stuff put in her face, in season 4 episode 3 adora says that setting the portal off hurt a lot of people which catra instantly looked bad and Scorpia leaving is also making catra feel bad as she is seen looking for her in this episode, she knows she has done wrong and is just refusing to acknowledge it, catra actually isn't actually my favorite character but she definitely has the best writing on this show

To answer your question on why people like Catra; at least for my perspective. I like her because she's a tragic character with trauma. I have trauma from my past, trust issues, i've been in her shoes at one point where I kept pushing people away, lashing out, i've lost people, ive lost alot, but i gained after. i hit rock bottom and i clawed my way back up. I still am. But she's a reminder that you shouldn't let the past affect your future. I can't say much on her in future episodes, but perhaps you'll have a slight change of heart in season 5. She's not....bad...perse. She's got bad traits. But she, like all of us, has problems. I tear up when I see her past. See the abuse she went through, see the signs in her trauma responses. It chokes me up, because I understand too well how it feels to want to keep your heart guarded. Despite so badly wanting to share with someone and confide, and feel safe. She resembles a stray cat who has been abandoned over and over, who is so emotionally damaged that you just...don't know if they'll go too deep or finally get help. I guess only time will tell~

I will say that while i never hated Catra in this series, I hated Glimmer for 4 seasons. The first four seasons, she never considered herself to be wrong about anything. Look at all the episodes multiple times she does what she wants no matter what anyone says. That shit annoyed the crap out of me. Idk it just feels like whatever she is feeling was more important than her friends feelings. You could say the same thing about catra, i guess, but she just seems more honest about being a shity person and less fake, aka hiding how shity they are to me. Like, glimmer to me gives off fake friend energy for so long in this series, and i dont know how to explain why that messes with me so much. Im not sure if anyone else felt that way watching the series . I never see anyone, just not like glimmer for as long as i did

Catra can be a hard person to like especially in the first four seasons because of her actions. There are multiple instances in which she acts purely for the sake of her own personal gain, and other times for the gain of the horde as well. Thinking about what Scorpia said this episode, that she doesn't even know what friendship really is, it can be noted that that is likely true for the entire horde. Scorpia was raised at first by her family and was taught kindness and she learned her value. Catra, on the other hand, was always told she was less than other by the one person she was always seeking approval from. Shadow Weaver always favored adora over catra, but later on would talk to catra to gain her trust and then betray her. Speaking of favoritism, catra constantly put in effort as a child to be recognized by others (especially shadow Weaver) only to have it shoved down her throat that adora was better. In (I think) s1 ep11, in one of catra and adora's memories of combat training, catra put in the most work compared to the others when double teamed by adora and Lonnie, but ended up losing because adora tricked her in the end. She claimed she was fine with second place, but then left early and broke down in the locker room, showing her true feelings only to herself. She always wanted to be first place and put in the effort but her work was always undermined by everyone finding adora "more likeable". Additionally, in an episode she brings up a very true point when speaking to Shadow Weaver. I can't remember the episode, but the quote was "you made me this way, and you get to be the good guy?" (taking place after shadow Weaver went to bright moon, I think it was an episode in season 3). She outrightly blames shadow Weaver for how her life turned out which is true in the case of her mental state. Throughout her life she was psychologically abused by shadow weaver and her feelings were constantly undermined. Multiple times throughout the series, also, viewers get to see catra's vulnerable side: one of which being this reaction episode, another being shadow Weaver's escape from the horde, but the one I want to talk about is in s1 ep2. This is the episode where adora decided to leave the horde during the attack of the outpost village (I can't remember the name, was it theymour?) and begs catra to come with her. Catra believed they should stay together, however she quickly realized there was no bringing adora back. This was the final straw for catra, considering adora was one of the only reasons catra could have a little happiness growing up. She was, at first, very hurt by adora's betrayal. She began to obsess over gaining power and authority to fill the void that had been left. Throughout the series, catra comes to the realization that having power is the only reason that anything in her life may go her way. She treated scorpia in such an awful way because she can't understand the concept of real friendship due to the circumstances she grew up in. She doesn't see any reason to treat scorpia (or anyone for that matter) in a kind way and constantly lashes out at people in fear of herself being hurt by them. (For anyone who has seen fruits basket, she kind of reminds me a bit of akito in some cases.) I'm not trying to claim that as of now in the series she is a good person or that her actions aren't bad. Catra isn't a good person, but she has been hurt and mentally scarred by the people she was and has been surrounded by. I get why she isn't that likeable, but she really isn't just a run-of-the-mill power hungry antagonist in a cartoon; she does have depth and reasons behind her actions, which this show does a good job of expressing for all of the characters. (To anyone who has read all of this, oh my god I'm sorry I write so much.)

I totally agree with you. I mean I get it when some people just don’t like her, because like you said, Catra isn’t a good person, I can’t blame people for not liking her. But at least trying to understand what Catra has been going through/ IS going through wouldn’t hurt and it would just clarify her point of view and why she is acting the way she is. It kind of hurts me to watch someone hating Catra so much without even trying and without WANTING to try to at least a bit understand where she is coming from. I think you pointed out many good points in your comment and also i think that Catra couldn’t just „get better“ in the moment. Even if she wanted to, she is literally at her lowest (and it hurts to see her like that) but she doesn’t know any better, and she hates herself so much that she just doesn’t care anymore and doesn’t care about herself and what happens to her at all (Im sorry if my english isn’t the best, I’m from germany)

Went into the “Golden Child” trope and how it makes her live under unreasonable expectations from everyone and when she doesn’t stack up to them you get situations like Glimmer’s outburst. Edit: I remembered. The channel is Five by Five Takes and the video was called “Why Adora Matter”. She also did one for Catra with a similar name. Obviously don’t watch if you don’t want spoilers.

oooooohhhh mannnnnn we're getting to the BEST episodes of she ra!! followed by not only the best season of she ra but one of my favorite seasons of a show everrrrrr. also fun fact, ND stevenson tweeted that he cried while writing the scene of Bow and Glimmer (and Adora) arguing in this episode, Bow has always always had Glimmer's back, for a long time he was her only friend and now (in Glimmer's eyes) he has betrayed her and taken Adora's side. You see just how cold Glimmer gets after he says that she is wrong? wow. Glimmer and Catra are kinda gong through similar arcs in this season, i think thats why the first episode of the season showed them both 'ascending to power' at the same time. They've both been given more power and control this season but we see how the weight of that just pulls them to pieces. Glimmer reacting to the stresses by becoming more cold and removed, never losing confidence in herself, while Catra does the same as she has all along, forcing everyone in line, but none of it is making her happy in the way she thought it would. Everything and everyone she's abandoned and hurt, all to get here at the top, to prove it was all worth it, that power and respect was what she wanted. But alone and abandoned by everyone, she falls to pieces. She's almost hit rock bottom. but not quite yet.

This is in no way a criticism, just an observation that I find interesting. You seem to be going to some far lengths to see Glimmer's side while also having yeeted Catra off of the sympathy cliff. However, when I watched for the first time, I had largely the opposite reaction, feeling sorry for Catra and her, admittedly self-inflicted, decent into despair while also finding Glimmer so grating and self-righteous that I couldn't stand her anymore. I guess that's a hallmark of good writing, multiple valid interpretations that can spark interesting conversations and ideas.

I think the big difference between Catra's decisions and Glimmer's decisions that make the latter sympathetic while the former is simply frustrating to watch is the fact that Glimmer is being perfectly rational and her primary concerns are everyone's safety, whereas Catra is being irrational, directed entirely by emotional trauma and is entirely self-centered. Glimmer has entirely valid points and her reasoning behind her decisions are completely sound, it just so happens that things don't play out how she expects. (For instance, she gets a lot of shit for wanting to use the First One's weapon, but technically no one has any solid reason to think they *can't,* Adora and Bow just assume it *will* backfire.) Catra on the other hand doesn't *have* any "points," she just does what she feels she should and reacts to things happening around her, and due to her traumas her "reactions" are almost all terrible and universally destructive. Yes we can tell why she's reacting poorly, but that doesn't really make it any better, she's still choosing to do doing bad things for bad reasons with no regard for anything or anyone but herself. Oh, and also remember at this point that Catra has already ended the world once with the portal and is completely unrepentant about it. She's literally destroyed everything and everyone in the world once intentionally and doesn't even seem to reflect on it or regret it.
@NakanaiJP
@NakanaiJP 8 ай бұрын
@@officiallyjan8596 For me, it's the opposite. I don't find Glimmer sympathetic because she's a spoiled, privileged brat who has no appreciation of the horrors that Shadow Weaver inflicted on Adora (and Catra) and thus no understanding of why it hurts Adora so much when she seeks SW's counsel. Catra's logic ("I grew up powerless & abused, so if I obtain power, I won't be abused anymore and will therefore be happy") makes much more sense to me than Glimmer's ("I will ignore the advice and opinions of people I care for because I don't like it."). S4 Glimmer is not a substantially different person than S1 Glimmer, who threw a tantrum in her mom's throne room when she got grounded. Just like S4 Catra is fundamentally the same as S1 Catra, still seeking safety in the hierarchy of the Horde.
@officiallyjan8596
@officiallyjan8596 8 ай бұрын
@@NakanaiJP That's a completely backwards read on Glimmer IMO. Glimmer is being the mature person in the room, the one who's willing to do painful things for the sake of protecting everyone even if it hurts because everyone's safety is more important than someone's feelings getting hurt. Contrary to what Adora likes to pretend, Glimmer *is* shown to consistently question all the advice she gets from Shadow Weaver and she *does* reject what she doesn't agree with, Adora is just too hurt too be able to see it. If anything, it's Adora being immature this entire season, constantly taking offense when someone simply did the logically best thing to ensure success (Which in their case means keeping people safe and stopping Horde attacks) and constantly ignoring her most logically sound options "just" because they involve Shadow Weaver and her traumas don't allow her to accept that Shadow Weaver could be useful for any reason in any context. She's the one with emotional issues she can't handle and she's the one letting her issues and biases bleed over into compromising her better judgment. Glimmer on the other hand has grown out of the brat she was in the earlier seasons, she used to be just as reckless and rash and emotionally-driven as Adora is but as Queen, Glimmer's become tempered and is highly considerate of her options and no longer operates on the childish assumption that what *feels* right is always what *is* right, she's willing to make compromises and acknowledges that caution and preparation are *vital* components of safety and protection and that she needs to know what she's doing when she makes choices since many thousands of people's lives are directly effected by them. Literally the only reason Glimmer ends up "wrong" about anything in general is because some of her conclusions turn out to be incorrect despite her having had good reason to believe them, whereas Adora (and Catra) keep getting bailed out from (some/most of) the consequences of her rash decisions by things simply happening to work out despite having no foreknowledge about why they would.

All ill say is that when you started this series, i did leave a comment regarding how you'll feel about catra by the end of the series. I like her mainly because i find her thoughts and actions interesting. I mean, i like azula in Avatar so thats what we are working with here

people who hate catra are so beyond me. I could write a whole essay about how catra is the best bpd representation ever. I also have bpd and they way they portray it with her character is very accurate. its not easy for us either. the biggest thing people with bpd need is patience. not to be painted as a villain because we are not doing anything maliciously ever. its fine if you don’t like her character but the long rants attacking a character with a personality disorder that they can’t control is just super annoying to me.

actually real. i can understand disliking her, but not even taking a second to feel a little bit of sympathy or thinking of why she is the way she is is crazy to me.

@@S0LAVELLANHELLexactly. shes a complex character. she does terrible things for understandable reasons. you’re allowed to dislike her but wishing her dead? like she’s literally traumatized with a personality disorder

also youre not wrong in still being mad at catra, many many people were also really angry with her character at this point. A lot of people wondered if it was even possible to set up a path to redeem her character, considering all the horrible things she's done on the show, as well as seeing any opportunity to improve + better herself and throwing herself back into the trash pile. She's the type to hit rock bottom and grab a shovel to keep digging down deeper. Personally i'm so weak for lady villians i love when women do terrible things on shows bc i love villians + women hot ahhh. and catra's no exception for me, i love her and her atrocities, she keeps things dramatic and interesting (as a viewer). and i love angst so seeing her make the wrong choices reminds me of times when i (or someone i care abt) just made the wrong call, or acted out of anger, or did something bad and seeing characters make choices in similar ways just feels really REAL to me and makes their story more human, esp if they have regrets and are able to do the hard, embarrassing work of apologizing, making things better and growing from it. the question is, will catra be able to change or will she be a stubborn bratcat till the end of the line?

Right now Catra reminds me of Series Finale Azula and Act Five Scottish King. Even in a world of magic there is no path remaining that leads to redemption. unless

Why are you so hard on catra after saying thing like “this show dose their back stories so well I understand where everyone is coming from.” And “Glimmer, I get it.” And then you seem to not understand Catra’s backstory at all. I’m a bit confused. She dose not know what you are saying because she was an abused child. You are speaking a foreign language to her about kindness and treating others bad. That’s all she knows and understands. She has lived her life tortured, stressed, scared, abused and in constant fight mode. She dose not know what it’s like to be treated or treat others with kindness. She also has lived in constant survival mode that’s turning into self destruction and well… wanting to end her own existence. I’m sorry you are wrong. You don’t have to root for her but you also don’t have to be so unkind when she is on screen. She needs mental help that she can’t get, that dose not make her trash. I hope you are not like this in real life to those who are struggling.

@@artsykrl8944 Yea.. The entire tatooing her forehead and killing her thing and calling her a bitch was a bit... eehhh.. It got to me a bit. That is a lot of hate towards a teenager/young adult that just need professional help and a lot of therapy No matter if you think she is 1000% right or wrong in her actions.

Thinking about character that is mean is too hard :< Might as well keep calling her a bitch and saying she should die instead of enjoying an interesting and flawed character.

You probably never have heard of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai... but you made me think of an exchange I love from that movie. Buckaroo and an alien seize control of an alien spaceship. Buckaroo takes a moment to go over the controls and then he puts the alien in the pilot seat. Buckaroo: Don't worry. It drives just like a truck. Alien: That is good.... what is a truck?

I gotta say, Mosco, I love you and your content and all, but whenever you decide that you hate a character you can get really hard to watch. The sheer vitriol you spew out can be really unpleasant and uncomfortable, even if the character deserves it (which for Catra I would say is arguable). It's just not a good time seeing you be so mean
