Anyone who has experience with a family member who suffered from Alzheimers or dementia will be very familier with what Razz is experiencing in this episode. The shifting between times and places, the misidentifying of people based on older memories. Even as much as I enjoy the writing in the show, this is jaw-droppingly well done. It really lands and can be hard to watch.

"Daddy Hordak" is both the best and most cursed name I've ever heard and I love it. Also, I still can't believe this show made me cry over a pie. This episode really made Mara one of my favorite characters of the show and its sad how little we get to see of her. It's so cool how much depth they were able to put into a character we rarely see on the show and it's a big reason this episode is so loved by everybody.

Razz does not experience time in a linear fashion. She uses the pie ingredients to help her remember the order of events that she moves through.

Strictly speaking, this cannot be called a nonlinear perception of time. More like a very long, unchanging time loop - from her point of view (she does not notice her chaotic movements in time). And unpredictable appearances and disappearances from the point of view of an external observer. So a time loop plus “random” time shifts equals a very unpleasant Groundhog Day.

The way Stevenson has described Mara and Light Hope, they did develop feelings that were more than friends. Mara treated her as a person and brought her flowers in an earlier scene of Light Hope's memory (which Light Hope sadly deleted because her new programming made her.) Yes, even holograms are gay in this show. 🌈

This episode is remarkable, a complete masterpiece in my mind. The jumping through time with Razz, the revelation of the true message from Mara hinted in the Crimson Waste, the true horrors of the First Ones' legacy, the terrifying colonization theme behind it, and the incredibly well written setup of the pie linking it all together... it's just so, SO heartbreaking. I'll never forget the first time I saw this episode. One of the best of the show! Mosco, I really love how much this episode challenged you and made you think and you're right, this is DEFINITELY not for kids. This show is something else. Can't wait for your reactions to the final episodes of this season. Keep it up my friend!

So, in case it didn't come across, Raz is the same age across 1000 years because she doesn't experience time linearly, a normal person moves in three dimensions and can observe the 4th (which is time) but Raz can move through all 4. Also, Mara says "you can save the planet WE love" not "with love" so don't bang your head against that wall too many times. Great video, you're always fun to watch :)

The best way I can describe Razz's situation/condition is "Magical Dementia." And the way they showed Dementia (or Alzheimer's with dementia being one of the symptoms) in this way is brilliant!

I can count on one hand the number of times I had to stop watching something to bawl my eyes out for a while. This episode was one of those times. I didn't even make it to the pie, the floodgate opened at "You cannot control magic, magic simply is." To this day I couldn't tell you why that was the breaking point: it just seemed really meaningful in a way that I couldn't articulate. (I would like to think that I had subconsciously picked up on the thematic link between magic and love, but I don't think I'm that smart).

From what I’ve learned at least, magic flows through everything, the land, through animals, and through us. We act as a conduit for magic. We don’t control magic, only funnel it into a more definite form and what we specifically want. We are a part of it as it is a part of us.

I really love getting an episode from Razz's perspective. I know in some fantasy novels, the wizard Merlin is portrayed as experiencing time backwards, so saying hello for the first time is far more emotional for him than saying a final goodbye. Razz has something similar going on. She has no consistency in which She-Ra she spends her time with, or when she meets them, so she gets their names mixed up, and her sense of what is urgent and what is not, doesn't make sense to others.

Same with Doctor Who with the Doctor and River Song where River first meets the Doctor in his future and constantly meets him in his past over and over again until she gets back far enough to when he doesn’t know her and it’s his turn to first meet her and that ends up being when she dies. But while River’s time with the Doctor is over, his time with her has only just begun.

Of the three Weird Sisters that want to steer She-Ra towards her destiny, Shadow Weaver and Light Hope come at it from completely opposing sides (which makes their ultimate show down insanely epic), while Raz is the only one who actually sees and values Adora (and Mara).

This was the episode that sparked my desire for a spin-off about mara. A kind of tragic story that starts with this episode and then rewinds to how her tragedy begins. So a doomed heroine fighting to save her adopted home only for her efforts to be ultimately unsuccessful, as far as she knows, with only the hope that her successor will succeed where she couldn't.

She-Ra Original Series Lore part 34: Madam Razz recap: Regina Fancy Razz was a powerful witch who lived in the Whispering Wood, formerly a resident of Selenia 600 years ago. Given her age, and the fact that she was kind of a goofball, she often mispronounced or forgot her spells; she had _literally_ forgotten more magic than most other magic users on either Etheria or Eternia have ever known. She quickly befriended Prince Adam's sidekick Orko. She apparently knew Light Hope but never interacted with him during the run of the series, and was one of the few people who knew He-Man and She-Ra's identities as Prince Adam and Princess Adora. Light Hope was the Guardian of the Crystal Castle, and a former Guardian of Grayskull. He could open the Dimensional Corridor that allowed travel between worlds, similar to how Sorceress could with Castle Grayskull's Portal Room. The First Ones were the original colonists, or possible creators, of the planet Etheria. At some point in the far distant past, their spirits would leave to reside in the Cavern of Fire deep below the surface of the planet, accessed via the Jaws of Darkness located beneath the Crystal Castle. They took the form of vaguely humanoid flames. When the gem on the Sword of Protection was damaged, they repaired it after Adora underwent their trials to prove she was worthy of its power, restoring her ability to become She-Ra. It's believed that the First Ones were Ancient Ones from Eternia. They appeared in one episode, and were mentioned in two others. There were plans for a story expanding on the history of the First Ones, but the series ended before it could happen. In the core of the planet was the Great Clock, an ancient device that could manipulate time. It was used one time during the series, by She-Ra to speed up an eclipse that was preventing Queen Angella from using her powers, which Hordak was using as an opportunity to invade the Whispering Woods. Mara recap speedrun any%: He-Man's sidekick in "The New Adventures of He-Man". Was completely unrelated to She-Ra; wasn't She-Ra, never met her. Mara's character design in the She-Ra reboot is a direct reference to Mara in "New Adventures".

Razz and Mara are great at making me cry. I love them, I love Old Light Hope, and Adora, and... [I can go on.] But, yeah, my reading is that Razz doesn't experience time linearly. To her, it bounces all over the place and loops around, and it's all very confusing so she loses track of when she is. (Especially when moments at one point in time are similar to moments in another.)

Razz seems to experience time out of order and all at once. I can't shake the feeling that she may be one of the most ancient beings on the planet, like she's Etheria's Tom Bombadill. In some versions of the legend the wizard Merlin experienced time backwards. Maybe Razz is supposed to be similar, living her life out of order and even reliving parts of it. I love this whole show so much and can get so wrapped up in every single episode. But on my first watch, this was the episode where I realized I was watching something truly fantastic. All the little hints throughout the show perfectly culminate in this episode and the gravity of the war, etheria's magic, and She-Ra really all fall into place and feel so much heavier. It's a monumental episode and a crucial tone shift that sets up the rest of this wonderful series 💜

The two biggest issues causing drama this season are Adora's over-protectiveness of Glimmer & Glimmer's insecurity as queen. Both characters are acting in completely believable ways and neither is more to blame (although I don't like that word) than the other is. All things considered, it would have been really useful for Glimmer to have witnessed the same things Adora & Bow did but then given Adora's over-protectiveness, that was never on the cards. And that kids, is good writing.

Definately one of the best single episodes of the series. Razz breaks my heart every time, until now we've seen her as the quirky mystical spirit guide type character, but this episode shows us what life is like for her living with something very similar to traditional forms of dementia. Despite all of that she still manages to be the maternal figure that Adora needs in her life, giving her the advice she needs and knocking her on head with a broomstick when nessecary.

She-Ra was native to Etheria. When the First Ones showed up, they co-opted her. Created the sword, possibly to ensure their own people would become She-Ra from then on; and knowing she would not appreciate their true motives, kept her in the dark. I suspect Light Hope wasn't reprogrammed, so much as triggered, to ensure She-Ra would fulfill the true purpose they intended for her. Perhaps Mara warned the other First Ones what she was going to do, and that's why they suddenly left en masse? As for Razz, I don't have a bloody clue, but at least now we know *why* she's crazy. I have a theory that she was younger when she started jumping through time, and every time she relives something, she's rewriting it, so eventually all anyone else remembers is old Razz... do we have any idea if she stops jumping, after the grande finale?

As for the rest of it, you are sometimes extremely right and sometimes extremely wrong, and I'm not going to tell you which times are which. I do think that Daddy Hordak is a good time, though; he comes with good food and an art collection and nice light shows and peace and therapy and other great gifts!

So, Razz has temporal dementia, e.g. she knows her entire life front to back at all times, and so she sometimes forgets "when" she is. Recreating certain days, consistency, helps her to keep it more straight. Its a result of angella being stuck outside time for so long. And because Angela is an immortal angel, that easily explains how she lived for 1000 years. In fact, she dresses like that just so she remembers that right now shes supposed to be "Razz".

17:22 adora is a first one and possibly part etherian but even though the planet's magic is supposed to choose the next shera, the first ones hacked into the planet and it's magic to ensure that only one of their own people can be shera and they use the sword to control them. also the planet didn't bring adora to it, light hope did that when hordak made a portal. the only reason it worked at the time was because light hope used some of Etheria's magic to let it happen without throwing time and space out of wack

There is a lot of good shit coming up in the future, but this is by far my favorite episodes of the series. The way they use Razz's unique time travel abilities to tell Mara's story and give us information about the Heart of Etheria is downright genius. The story feels so much more impactful because it's not just some flashback, it's happening right now in front of us. Powerful shit. Obligatory fake spoiler: The heart-like symbol you've been seeing is in fact NOT the Heart of Etheria. It's Adora's First One name written in their language. It was discovered by Catra during her redemption arc and served as a catalyst for them rekindling their relationship
