Probably to explain why she's living there. If she was married, she'd be living at her husband's place, and she'd be too old to be unmarried. Women from the upper class tend to get married off young, since they're not needed for any kind of work around the house or to make money.

When I first saw this scene of Candy and his sister, I thought there was gonna be incest in the film. The way he complimented her looks so enthusiasticly and the fact that he mentioned that she is a widow. I thought that was a way of hinting incest between them. As a non American who learned a lot of American internet humour, the fact that it was set in the South made me thing of an Alabama type of relationship lol

There's a lot of creepy stuff going on in this; Candie and his weird display of his sister, and overexcitement. German man asking for a german speaking slave woman, with his own intentions being hidden. Another individual iwth his intentions being hidden as well which we don't quite know yet with Stephen. The. There's the fact that Hildi is in the hot box. Django is grabbing on to his gun thinking the worst. Not to mention all the shots are subtle and making the scene more tense, probably intentionally from the directing. It's definitely meant to be a scene full of tension, especially since this is all the catalyst for the final act of the film.
