As someone who has read and written Reader/OC inserts (wrote OC inserts, read Reader Inserts), I can't say they're ALL horrible, though I wholeheartedly understand your opinion. Most of them are.....VERY hard to read.... Especially the ones that do those dumb, HEAVILY overused tropes like "Oh, my (insert number here) gf(s) cheated on me so I'm gonna destroy the world" or "I'm so weak, so I'm gonna become this god and date, like, 20 women" or "oh, I was abused by my family who realistically would never abuse me, so I'm gonna hate them.....for two chapters....then FORGIVE them!". Then you got what's referred to by the community as "Lemons" aka Smut......There's more of that which exists than I'd like to admit....never felt comfortable reading them and never even considered writing them. AO3 is the main offender with that last point......do not go on AO3. There's some.....REALLY freaky stuff on there that'd make you want to quit the internet.

As a person who has read (and written some oc inserts in the past with varying results) some of both, yeah, I have no arguments here....some are good, but most......literally require me to be either bored as hell or require me to turn my brain off to even manage to read them. And that only goes for SOME of that "most". The rest I can't bring myself to read because either it's some cliche edgy bs (the most common one, containing various tropes, such as abused/neglected protag, betrayed protag, harem, I'm sure you know the drill) or it looks like it was written by a 5 year old. The first few I made.....dear God, I was BAD. I didn't follow any of the usual edgy tropes listed (as I've always hated them), but I wasn't very good at writing a decent story back then, so they came out just as cringed. I got better over time, but ultimately went into a perma-hiatus/retirement, but I digress. Then there's AO3.......which is 98% just straight up smut.....yeah we don't talk about AO3....
