In the early 1970s when this film was made, understanding of erectile dysfunction (ED), often referred to as impotence at that time, was still evolving. The prevailing view linked ED more to psychological factors than physiological ones.
Psychologists believed that anxiety, stress, guilt, depression and/or relationship issues like sexual affairs were the primary causes of ED. Freudian theories about sexual development and anxieties were influential and psychoanalytic perspectives guided treatment. The problem was treated as a mental or emotional disorder rather than a physical condition. Therapists would work with individuals or couples to explore underlying emotional issues or relationship dynamics that might be contributing to the problem. Many wives accused their husbands of affairs and therapists accepted that as a cause whether or not it was true.
Because of this emphasis on psychological factors therapy was the primary mode of treatment for many men with ED. Psychotherapy, particularly psychoanalysis, was a common treatment approach. Some therapists used behavioral techniques, aiming to reduce performance anxiety and improve sexual function by focusing on exercises and other methods that emphasized touch and emotional connection over sexual performance.
While the understanding of the physiological aspects of ED was limited, some medical interventions were available. Vascular surgery and hormone treatments were explored but were generally less effective and less commonly used. Vacuum erection devices started to be introduced in the 1970s, providing a non-invasive way to assist in achieving an erection.
Impotence was frequently stigmatized, and men who experienced it felt shame and embarrassment. This made seeking treatment difficult and it also contributed to a lack of research and understanding about the condition.
It wasn't until later decades that the medical community began to recognize the complex interplay of psychological and physiological factors contributing to ED. The development of medications like Viagra in the late 1990s marked a significant shift in the understanding and treatment of erectile dysfunction, emphasizing the physiological factors and allowing for a broader array of treatment options. In 1972, these options were more limited, and the psychological community's approach to treatment was primarily focused on therapy and counseling.
This film was sponsored by Ortho Pharmaceuticals, a division of Johnson & Johnson, a company involved in the production of contraceptives. They did not primarily specialize in sexual impotence or erectile dysfunction treatments, but in the early 1970s they developed a diagnostic tool called the "erection hardness scale" or "erection quality scale." The scale was designed to help clinicians understand and assess the quality and hardness of a man's erection. By providing a standardized way to measure erection quality, the scale helped clinicians diagnose erectile dysfunction and determine the effectiveness of treatments.
The erection hardness scale was a simple tool consisting of a series of levels that described the quality of an erection, from completely soft to fully hard and rigid. While Ortho Pharmaceuticals was not directly involved in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, their development of this diagnostic tool contributed to the understanding and diagnosis of the condition.

This is a big waste of time, as far as getting to what’s actually happening, in the relationship, and just what is common with couples, after that long. I’ve never met anyone, who was having affairs, or an affair, and was trying to have sex with their spouse, on the same nights, that they’d just had sex with the other person. A person being unfaithful, most likely, would avoid it. It’s also her only reasoning for the affair. So many obvious questions, that weren’t asked. How about asking her if he still tries to bring her to climax, even after some of these moments, have happened? Then if the answer is, that he doesn’t, ask why not, and then ask if either of them, still, ever or Last gave or received oral sex. The guy seems in a mind numbing job, and maybe he has realized he could be having sex with other women. Maybe more attractive, and/or younger women, but he goes home to try and have sex with his wife instead, and it’s just not happening. I wouldn’t be surprised, if they’ve never given oral sex to one another, or anyone else. The person asking questions, didn’t seem like a therapist, or was he asking questions like one. I don’t know what could be learned from this video.

Men can get a porn habit or addiction, they simply lose interest in regular sex because they are whacking off so much, also of course it gives them unreal expectations about appearance which no normal person can live up to: regular men don’t have huge muscles and donkey sized d*cks, regular women aren’t 18 year old models and hairless with giant b**bs, and it gives them unreal expectations about how sex works - porn typically is rough with super submissive women doing degrading things and no foreplay.

Listening to this now in 2023, I would say that it is both medically, and mentally, it’s embarrassing to say that with this man went through, at one point in my life, it happened to me as well, two things were probably happening here with this gentleman, an inflamed prostate, also in the pelvic area, inflammation as well, that it doesn’t give enough blood flow to that general area, that’s what was happening to me, they gave me some medication it all went away. Once the inflammation in the pelvic area was diminished, I was good as new, and I would say even better than before, again it’s the luxury of living in 2023 where you can talk this openly with people, and maybe you can help somebody else. Just don’t let any doctor tell you that it’s only mentally, it happened to me. I had to get a second opinion and now I’m more frisky than ever.

Really good, this one. Courageous of them to do this publicly. She has no evidence of an affair but assumes that must be the root cause, which reminds me of a funny country song "It's Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long". The husband expressed feeling fatigue when it was time to go home. That suggests to me that maybe she's badgering him too much, questioning his masculinity, etc.? She is sure staring daggers at him several times. The last couple of years of my marriage were pretty tense and I couldn't have found the desire even with a dozen pills, but now in my 60s I have a girlfriend who I get along with great and we have more sex than I've ever had in my life. Nobody likes living with a harpy. If the mental/emotional stimulation isn't there for whatever reason, it won't work.

Reading the information in the description, makes this even more confusing. 😆 Kidding aside, I really don’t know what they’re hoping to learn with such questioning. Whst the information, in the description, does do, is show how in the dark they were, concerning ED, and sexual relationships, in general, if this was an actual therapist or psychiatrist, questioning them for that long. He doesn’t even ask her if her husband’s problem, is the only reason, she believes her husband is having an affair. If she really believes he’s having an affair, then she’s putting off that energy all the time. He doesn’t even ask if he’s ever had an affair, or if she’s thought he had, earlier in their 23 years of marriage. I mean, how many people who are cheating, come home to immediately try to them have ex with their spouse/partner, the same night? I’m sure there are people who do, but the vast majority, are going to avoid sexual contact with someone they’re cheating on. Her “…it’s the only reason I could think of…” logic, seemed like she read it in Cosmo, or some other magazine, as pop psychology was big, on television, and all media.

Love the doc's style! I will check The Library of Medicine for the rest of the video. The other video you posted posted with a couple I was able to find and view on the Library site. I reckon I understand why you didn't show the rest of it. Not that every person doesn't know about master-bation, but it was cool it was a topic in 72., interesting how the same doc uses therapy.

I think it's really sad that people are commenting and blaming it all on the woman. This is a hard situation for both parties no pun intended. As far as their looks, either one of them looking old.. It has a lot to do with those haircuts and clothing. People are way more into their looks today, and there's plenty of solutions to making yourself look younger than was available back then. They both are dressed with that day's style. Which of course is hideous, but not their fault. Coming on to television to share your sexual issues with the world isn't It's the easiest thing to do and it Could be easy to get offended. Also we don't know how they are treating each other outside of this show. How far out of his regular routine he has become. How shut off he has become towards her.. Which would be understandable as far as him dealing with this situation back at that time before people were more open. Then of course, it would be understandable as to why she would be thinking That he has gotten a younger woman. Going by some of the comments here, If this is the way you would talk about your wife, Pretending and acting like she has no reason to think that there's another woman... All women would think that, At least in the beginning. If the shoe is on the other foot, you can most definitely be assured That the man would think his wife was whoring around. There is more going on here than people are paying attention to. As I said before, he has shutting down on her as she has mentioned she has shown interest in his day and work and he completely cuts that conversation off twi e just as he did about the subject of another woman. He won't even validate her feelings on this. We have no idea what is going on at home and Im sure it's worse in private where nobody can critique their communication techniques.

David, judging by the comments, you should clarify something. This is an industry film and these people are actors.
@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker
@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker Жыл бұрын
That is completely incorrect. All the information about this film and others like it that were recorded at that time indicate that these were real people and the doctors were real as well. There is no evidence of them being actors and if they were, they would have to be among the most famous to pull that off. David Hoffman filmmaker

This guy vehemently denied having an affair, David, and wasn’t challenged, so I don’t quite understand the title of this particular video. A fictitious affair didn’t appear to be the problem here, but rather a number of other factors. Nonetheless, quite a frank and interesting discussion.

Of course you are correct having seen the film, but the purpose of the title is to draw viewers who then can decide if they want to view the clip. The purpose of the title is not to describe the details of the clip as that would take too many words. David Hoffman filmmaker
