Apparently people interpreted Qianlong’s love for Ruyi differently. How I see it is that Ruyi is the only one he loved in his harem. He just loved himself more. He enjoyed his beauties, of course. But after a short while, most of them rarely got revisits. After all, Ruyi cutting her hair, while to announce their separated, in effect it was equal to cursing her husband to death. Yet a highly superstitious only took her things and put her in house arrest out of rage, never took away her title. He even gave back her stuff after cooling down but she sent them all back. It was likely that she could also leave as well, but chose not to. Probably too sick by that point as health tanked pretty quickly after that.
