I think the white arsenic played a part in that distrust in ruyi too. It still does not negate how poorly he treated ruyi. However remember, we see the traps being set. He didn't. He was truly shock that the first empress did what she did. Then to find out most of his harem calculates. Even ruyi did to perserve herself. Also With time his ego was inflated, and ruyi wouldn't support his shenanigans like the others. She didn't stroke his ego either. Once he officially found out that ling was not sincere, he then realized what he had done. By that time it was too late. When he slapped ruyi, and told her she should just accept his scandal with the prostitutes. You could see it in her face that she realized the man she once loved was no longer there. Im glad he wound up at the top of the summit by himself like he predicted. He only had himself to blame for that. Sad thing is he could have at least told ruyi she was right, and apologize. Instead he said the past is the past. Basically "get over it, I'm the emperor".

Because just watching historical dramas and knowing that yes some is fake for entertainment these people we make films or books about actually did exist and suffered tragedies that we can either draw conclusions on or simply imagine. In our days their problems seem simple to solve or using our tools/technology to help solve but back then it was very dog eat dog situations. Survival of the fittest and smartest. And the emperor at first shocked about what empress did since hui told him Empress deed(but i think real bad thing empress did which happened is bracelet she gave to ruyi and hui). At the end emperor felt sorry to empress after asked lianxin about the bad things emress maybe did,lianxin said empress didnt capable to do bad thing like that, it was sulian who did bad things without empress knowing. And it makes the emperor felt a sorry for empress for not treated her nicely back then. And emperor started to keep distance from ruti after ruyi lost her child, it was consort ling doing, but the emperor trusted that ruyi jinxed the child, and it made ruyi so sad, after this whether emperor or ruyi can't come back again like before. Emperor wanted ruyi to be still sweet talking and reach out the emperor first even though the emperor who left scar first in ruyi's heart. ruyi isn't the type person who can act affectionate toward him anymore. Thats why emperor compare him to the first empress which always say yes over anything he said and want. Obedience is what this emperor want from ruyi. Btw,sorry for my bad english

"臣妾" and "嬪妾" have similar meanings since "妾" means "spouse." On the other hand, "嬪" is used to refer to her status as a concubine, while "臣" translates to "subject." -> concubines are still subjects of the Emperor, therefore they refer themselves in such a way. So when addressing themselves to higher-ranking people, they have to use self-deprecating titles (so in this case for example "I, your subject, will obey to your commands") of other concubines, the Empress, the Emperor and the Empress Dowager.
