I'm a DIY nail student. I used a cuticle slicer for the first time last week. I didn't realize how sharp the cuticle slicer was. I shredded 8 of my 10 nails! Never again! I wish I had seen your video first 😢.

The slice and dicer!! Wow, these are the worst tools ever! Before I started doing my own nails I used this a few times and destroyed my cuticle and a LOT of the surrounding tissue area. It is super easy to get carried away. My mum was so shocked by the mess of my fingers she put both of these tools she had in the bin! One of them was on a double ended scraper that she liked, so she kept bending it until it snapped off and just kept the end she liked! These tools are extremely sharp so you don't even realise the damage you've done until its too late. My fingers were all bloody, sore and infected for days! Even now that I have a bit more experience I WOULD STILL STAY WELLLLLLL CLEAR! xx

I use that cuticle slicer a lot. I get hard hangnail spots on the edge of my nails, this tool is perfect for me because I can easily get it underneath the hangnail or hard spot. I do not use it to remove the cuticle during manicure though.

I like using the cuticle trimmer. I do wet manicures, let my hands soak for a bit, use a pusher and a stone nail file/buffer. After I have my cuticles lifted, I use the trimmer then I buff it again to make sure everything is smooth.

Before I started doing my own nails properly, and I got nail clippers, these came with those slicers. I tried them more than once and every time I sliced my skin or damaged my nails the same as your model because you had to push the cuticles and soak them before using the slicer, or else it wouldn’t slice through. You can imagine how easy it is to do a LOT of damage. I always thought I was doing something very wrong.

I *love* this look! I'm wearing something very similar myself right now lol. I used to use one of those cuticle forks (that's what I've always heard it called) several years ago when I was just into regular nail polish on my natural nails and hoo boy the damage I did to myself was crazy! Yes, they'll take your cuticle off but if you're not super careful they'll also take off layers of your nail. I ended up with what looked like rings of fire from only using that demon tool. Now the only thing I use that tool for is slicing through the foil seals on new pots of gel. They're perfect for that! 😅

I had that cuticle cutter in a set I got as a gift for Christmas as a teenager. I many a time sliced a chunk of healthy skin off leaving my fingers bleeding it was horrible. I now have cuticle nippers and they are so much better. I tend to get a lot of hang nails so it really helps for those. They are just a bit awkward to hold sometimes in your less dominant hand.

Thank you for this video! It’s exactly what I needed! I’ve been giving my nails a break since I know I’ve made the mistake of overfilling them while learning how to use an efile. (I also have a high pain tolerance so it’s hard to tell) But as my nails grow it’s hard for me to tell if it’s growth or cuticle since my fingers cuticles tend to be dry. Thank you 🙏 ❤

The problem with those forked cuticle trimmers is that you have to use force to cut and it can easily cut live tissue before your pain response tells you to stop.

I have one of the “cuticle splicers” is what I call them. I bought a manicure kit (or I got it for Xmas), and I should’ve known when the nail clippers wouldn’t cut through my nails, that I should’ve thrown it away… but I didn’t. I soaked my feet and went to use the cuticle splicer… and it worked well getting off the dry side walls… but when I used it on my cuticles… I cut into my skin! 😬😫 it was sore for weeks! I have those really thin cuticles.. I never have hang nails, but I have thin almost non-existent cuticles… to the point when I would go to the Asian nail salons (you know they never prep your cuticles) the nail tech would burn and cut my cuticles with the electronic file EVERY TIME! NO EXAGGERATION! There was not 1 time I left salons without bleeding. True story. I continued to go UNTIL 2 separate nail techs attempted to give me clear acrylic nails when I asked for gel nails.. and they would’ve charged me extra for it too. They think we’re stupid. Maybe it’s just the ones in NC but gel is gel NOT POWDER for those who don’t know. I can’t think of how many times I asked for gel, and got clear acrylic and paid for gel, and wondered why they looked so cloudy.. lol! Then the last time, after researching, I asked for gel, he pulled out clear acrylic powder and I said no gel.. he said this is gel, and I explained no, I want the clear gel not powder, I don’t want powder, and he still argued with me and said powder was better.. I told him I wanted gel. I swear he did a shit job on purpose, bc they started popping off the next day! I called and told him about it and told him I was putting him on blast on social media… THEN he offered to redo them. I said no thank you and I told him I would explain to everyone gel is gel and not powder, acrylic is powder. Pretty sure he cussed me in Cambodian. Another time a tech was tearing my fingers up and said to me “your company killed my father.” And I was like what I don’t understand and her friend looked at her and said “it country not company” I said ok. “Where you come from?” She said Vietnam… I replied, “yea… my father killed many fathers… maybe even yours.”. I got up and walked away. She was trying to figure out what I said when I walked out… I kept looking back walking through the mail waiting for her… finally I seen her walk out of the salon.. we made eye contact and I smiled really big and waved and mouthed bye!✌️ that’s why I started learning to do my own nails. 😂

I have always thought that cutting cuticles require that you have to always cut them. The reason I was told that like shaving calluses it causes a thickening of the skin. I use a a cream cuticle remover on my fingers and toes which work well. But I am doing DIY. So, I usualky remove cuticles the day before fill ins or new extensions. So, my ? Is that wrong info re: cutting cuticles? Thanks.

I have heard the same and use liquid cuticle remover. It's always worked fine for me and I'm in my 60s. I think the cuticle clipping is what makes it a Russian manicure (or a big part of it).

I love using my cuticle slicer, tho not on my cuticles lol. The skin lateral to my nails sometimes grows pretty thick around the free edge (almost callus like) and I use that tool to trim that down a little. Its not a lot and it feels much nicer like that + i avoid cutting to deep (like I usually would with scissors).

****Help, please. **** I had a similar issue, but from accidentally over filing with the wrong bit. (small circle/sphere bit) It got snagged as i was cleaning under the skin fold, and created one thin spot in the nail plate. 4weeks later, the nail has grown out, and the thin spot turned into a crack, that continued splitting up the nail towards the skin fold. Last night it turned into an open wound. 😭 I'm scared it will continue splitting up. There is even a small bump under the skin fold, in the matrix area, where it has split. How can i protect this wound so that it can heal?? Looking everywhere online for info and this video is the closest example i can find. Input please 🙏🏼 😭😭😭

I had this from pulling off an acrylic nail. Stupid, I know. I didn't know what it was, so of course, I continued to pull the piece off, and I had a hole in my nail right under and into my finger. The hole through to my nail bed has taken months to grow out. My nails grow very slowly. I kept it open to the air until the wet bits dried out, then no applied a very short full cover tip, keeping the gel away from the hole, to protect my fingertip. It's been a long, slow recovery, but it's getting there. PLEASE, if you have anything like this, go to a nail tech for advice.

Trained with a metal cuticle pusher, and still use it to this day. If you are fully trained, you should have no problem with it. It's the untrained public, who have the problems. You need to stop slamming other types of tools! If you aren't confident in your own skills in using them, that's fine, but don't go spreading misinformation. If you have the angle of the scraper wrong, you will cause damage, but any tool can do this in the wrong hands, even an orange wood stick.
