True story….lost my job and went back to school. I didn’t apply for food stamps, I just wanted WIC to help with my 3 little kids while in school at the time. Was a NIGHTMARE at the time to get but I did. Once I was done with school and got a job, I stopped the benefits. They told me I could stay on the program since I was already on it. I said “no” as I had a job now and didn’t need it anymore, I was excited to take myself off the program and I walked out of there dumbstruck at how easy it would be to take advantage, but my pride was that I wanted to provide for my family, not depend on the government hand to provide for my family. The point is the programs are there to help people, not be a way of living.

My mom was widowed at the age of 31, my dad fell from scaffolding and died from internal bleeding. There was no life insurance. So my mom was a 28 yr old single mother with 4 children, including a set of twins (me &my brother) She was a dedicated, stay at home mom,but now she would have to work, and had no work experience. So she worked at fast food places. And cleaned houses on the side. My grandparents helped a little , but it was hard. I remember when I was 13, I was embarrassed my mother worked at burger king. Eventually she was offered a job managing a lunch counter in a drugstore, and she worked there best nearly 30 to years. Mom knew where every thrift store, discount bakery and Goodwill stores were. She went to yard sales and she was expert level at lay away - she probably would have qualified for assistance, but it wasn't an option. She's 82 now. All is kids now make sure she is taken care of.

I had to pay child support for years. They started taking it out when I was making pretty good money for the time period it was in. It wasn’t the mother who did this, it was the state. They took half my money when I lost the job I had when I started making way less money. They accused me of losing the job on purpose to lower my child support. Who in their right mind would do that. It made it hard on me and every relationship I tried to have. To the ladies I was a broke ass POS but still worked two jobs which just didn’t cut it. I love my son and now live back with him and his mother. Crazy how things work out like that.

It’s different when the men are off to war or dealing with another catastrophe and the women and men who remained behind have to pick up the slack but it’s not something to be glorified or aspired to. My hat’s off to the women that do it and make it work but it is always best to have the 2 parent household, preferably the traditional nuclear family setup. Mothers and fathers have different viewpoints and energies, and that’s what makes kids the most well-rounded and honestly gives the best chance of making it in the real world.

I'm a Christian that believes that there are two genders and God created man than woman. I raised my last son alone after my husband died. The only benefits I ever took were state insurance for him. That was only after the affordable care act kicked in, and that could no longer afford our insurance. I'm remarried three months before he turned twenty-one. My husband left me with 2 little children. Ages 2 and 4. I did not receive gov help. I worked went to school and supported my children. One child is a Dr. Of Pharmacy in acute neuro critical care, and a researcher. Other child is a Physist, electro-optics engineer, Lazer specialist, test pilot, war specialist, etc. Raising children can be done. But it requires dedication, hard work, resilience and PRAYER. No dating. That takes time away from your children. Children first. You second. Date after you did your job.

Former caseworker here- i was shocked at how often actual caseworkers would encourage families to split/have dad leave home, so mom could collect a few hundred bucks a month- with no thought to the cost of the dad finding a home, and the inevitable divorce that follows. I was married when l had my children. I was forced into becoming a single mom. Had to go onto welfare, but I went to beauty school to learn a trade to take care of then. Even after I got my license, I still had to use welfare, but it only helped make up what needed. It wasn't something I rely on completely. Their father refused to pay child support. When I got to a point where I didn't need the support, I called my caseworker to tell her. She continued to ask me if I was sure I wanted to do that. As if trying to get me to stay on it.

I have said for years that there are so many empty State, Fed, buildings and stores that could be used as daycare so mothers can work. Woman could go to trade schools ,college. or work. EVERY WOMAN who receives a check takes a shift at the daycare you're NOW doing your part and making a way to get on your own feet. Many people truly need help and others play the system.

To be completely honest I never wanted kids then my ex wife told me she was pregnant. My world got flipped upside down the moment I got to hold my daughter for the first time, then I was blessed with a son. My kids are a reflection of who I was, and a mirror into the future.

I love Larry Elder. I think he's make an awesome VP!! Gotta agree on that for sure. This woman is mentally warped. What's wrong with families having a father present. What's so great about being a single mother? Been there after a divorce. Hated it. Remarried, he adopted my 2 children, we just had our 40th Anniversary. Would never want to be a single parent if at all able to avoid it. It was hard. Worked 3 jobs at one time temporarily. Sorry but that woman is crazy.

My x got on welfare while I was giving her child support. She was on it for 2 years before the state came after me for reimbursement. The money she collected from the state for my children went to her child from another man. Needless to say, by he time the state came after me, the amount plus the compound interest was beyond my ability to afford. After trying for over 31 years to pay off the $39k, I still owed 26k on the principle and over 80k in compound interest! I gave up. Let that sink in... 🤔

If you can afford it. Younger generations can't even afford a home, let alone the cost of raising a child and providing them with an education (even if it's homeschooling, someone has to give up a paying job to spend the time to educate them, themselves). I fully advocate for folks to have kids, but we need to address the fact that living paycheck to paycheck in an apartment is not sustainable for healthy children and a healthy society.

We need to do what some other countries do, and incentivize married families to have more children, mainly by cutting taxes for each child a married couple has. Four or more children, and the family doesn't pay taxes

It's a common practice in some groups. Granddaughter has a string of kids by multiple fathers, none participate in raising kids. Her Mom says she is no good and files a complaint with CPS and they take the kids. Grandma steps in to save the day... and because there is a 2 generation separation she can take them in as "foster" kids and gets $1300/mo per kid... they all live together in the same house scamming the system. My daughter had two friends in elementary school in EXACTLY that scenario.
