Depending on where you live this could be considered as a super expensive mahr. Not everybody can afford such a thing.... Anyways I do not see the point of comparing what or how much people get: that's what creates so called "norms" where things depend on the groom and bride stances.
@ranitaparin44327 жыл бұрын
Maha did I discuss the amount? Did I set a norm? Not sure why you are acting butt hurt for no good reason. Investing in the Akhira is a smart thing. The purpose of my comment was highlighting that my sister asked for something for God. And then Allah SWT provided so many provisions to make it happen. Can people get off their moral horses for a change. So sick of super sensitive people who can't handle mature conversations & feel the need to police and monitor folks through a keyboard and make them feel bad. Sit on that for while. And consider people's intentions before you slam them.

For you it's a good things to ask for hajj but please understand that for many such a thing is extremely expensive (around 8000euros per person). I am not feeling offended at all and believe that no matter the stances we should be able to discuss respectfully. Please read again my comment and your response as you are being excessive, insulting and attributing me ill intent... I am sorry if you thought I was attacking you or anything similar to that.

Love your explanation on this, Sid and Dina. Agreed that 60k for a regular guy is ludicrous! It's a pity that many regular folks are raising it sky high- when it doesn't fit the context, it does devalue the actual union.

siemenssx1 it'll tell you how, it causes resentment.
@321Sapphire1237 жыл бұрын
siemenssx1 The amount is symbolic of value yes for sure. However, my point is that when you ask an amount which doesn't fit the means of anyone in the union, you are devaluing the union as there is potential for it to be broken when agreements are not made on the mahr. If you ask for a decent amount, subjective of course, you facilitate the union rather than work against it. Does that make more sense to you?

As a revert Muslim, Monetary dowry was of no importance to me at the time. When I was asked what I wanted for my dowry. I knew straight away what I wanted. For my husband to help me learn more about the Deen. Nothing more. True to his word, he helps me to become a better Muslim. I didn't choose this faith for nothing. Being a revert, our imaan is strong and for me, I wanted someone not perfect but tries all the time to better himself. By him teaching me, I will see how his level of patience he has with me. I will also see if he will wake me up for fajr. You know, all those little things that some tend to slip by. Hubby is a great blessing! He's patient, understanding and ever so courteous. He was not well off like I was. But he taught me so much about love and love for the sake of Allah.

I honestly think her dad offered that crazy amount cause he knows the guy won't be able to afford it, thus breaking off the relationship. The dad doesn't want his daughter with someone who has diabetes out of fear that he may die prematurely and leave his daughter to fend for herself. It's messed up but it's the immigrant parent mentality. They never want to give their child off to someone who is "ill".

sid and dina didn't do a very good job of explaining the mahr/hakmer as protection for the woman. The man cannot divorce the woman unless he has paid all the agreed amount also the mahr should be enough for the woman to get back on her feet in case of divorce. therefore a sensible amount should be enough for her to live of for a few months or a deposit for a house e.g. a few thousand. I asked for £5000 for this reason (although i'm not at all worried about divorce, i thought it would be a good investment for our future children) however i come from a backwards society and men didnt like me making my own decisions and tried to get me to lower it to a couple of hundred. I stood my ground and the imaam backed me up. always stand your ground girls.

Finally a sensible comment. People are saying marriage should be based on trust and it should not be started on fear of divorce. I mean what dream land these people are living in? No one has seen the future, even the perfect marriages fall apart. Allah has given us this right to protect our furure. Why not use it? you dont have to use the right if you dont want to, but stop telling others that its wrong to ask for dowry.

^^^This is correct. Islamically the mahr is not just a gift, it is a kind of insurance that is there to protect the woman in case of divorce. Or to escape domestic abuse or even in the case of death of her husband especially if he doesn't have savings. It allows her to have savings available to her so that she can support herself whilst she is not being provided for by her husband. Of course the mahr doesn't have to be money, and women have a choice in what they ask for (if anything).

I'm a Hindu, and here in India, the bride's family is expected to pay up a hefty sum along with other stuff like an apartment, a car, etc etc (it's illegal and many modern families don't ask for it but it still happens in lower income families). As a result, the new bride (who usually stays with her in laws) is tortured and there are many cases of dowry related violence and even murders and suicides. it's really really sad.
@humishah84647 жыл бұрын
Can someone plz tell me Wat the ACTUAL logic behind a bride giving a dowry?? Like wth she moves house into her in laws deals with their crap and slaves for them and for all this she has to cough up huge sums???? Like whyy
@pssurvivor7 жыл бұрын
The logic is that a man is more valuable than a woman because he takes care of the elders, the female child is considered borrowed property by her parents because she leaves home after marriage. So when you get a groom it's like getting a son and that's valuable, and ladies, that comes with a hefty price tag.

Hina Singh the original significance of dowry for us was also as a gift for the outgoing daughter given by her parents. But over centuries that significance has been replaced by what we have today. But, I'll clarify that in most educated urban families it's not accepted any longer.

There's parents and in some cases the girls themselves who think that they can take advantage of the dowry ruling in Islam which is quite disrespectful on an Islamic point of view. By all means you are the bride and you can ask for what you want however when people like you're parents are telling you to ask for so much money it's just pure greediness because the dowry is only meant for the bride not her family. Just put yourselves in his shoes, he might be going in to debt just to make you happy whilst suffering and that is so wrong. Ladies and family of the bride, all i am saying is that be considerate of the grooms situation before demanding crazy amount of money.
@Rmm997267 жыл бұрын
siemenssx1 would you pay $60k? People get so greedy about money that they take advantage of the dowry and demand ridiculous sums of money. Also asking for that kind of money in exchange for the daughter sounds like they want to sell her off.
@Rmm997267 жыл бұрын
siemenssx1 clearly the groom feels like it's too much money so the bride's family should be considerate on his case. I know it is a must for the groom to give a dowry however if he feels like he can't give that much money then they should understand. I'm not judging at all, it's simply the brides decision on how much however in this case it's her parents who are demanding for it and that should not be the case because it's only the bride who decides what she wants. It's not fair on the grooms part if he can't afford to give money but the parents are asking for it. They should at least do what Dina's parents did and ask the groom how much he is able to pay instead of asking for dowry money when not knowing if it's okay for the groom to provide for it.
@Rmm997267 жыл бұрын
siemenssx1 he clearly states in the email that he can't afford to pay that much money for the dowry. Her parents want the money but the dowry is supposed to be for the bride. It's just very inconsiderate on her parents behalf because you should ask before to see if the groom is able to give that kind of money before he goes in to debt.
@Rmm997267 жыл бұрын
siemenssx1 that's exactly what I was trying to say but some people are far too greedy and don't think about what the bride would like. It's a bit sad on her part and his. Inshallah it works out for them though.
@xXxbaxroxXx7 жыл бұрын
Also 60,000 is reasonable because if he divorces her she gets nothing! He could leave her with kids and just move on to the next like so many do. Islamically that money is given to the bride to protect her in case of situations like these.

My husband is a revert/convert and it wasn't till 4 days before we planned to get married that my father accepted this man to be my husband... because honestly it took around 3 months of speaking with the board of imams regarding my situation (a very long one) and having one of them as my "wali/guardian". When dad finally came around he asked about the dowry and I mentioned it was a diamond ring and a jewellery set which weren't too expensive. But my dad only asked for one thing and that was for my husband to say the Shahada infront of him at the nikah for "security" because he wasn't present at the initial taking of the shahada. And now my father has a soft spot for him.. always asking about him and his family.. All I can say is Alhamdullilah for everything. Prayers do get answered, maybe not right away but they do and maybe not in the way you'd expect them to be. :)

My brother is also having to write down £60, 000 for his dowry because the bride's mother was causing a huge scene. Luckily his fiance disagrees with all this and along with our side of the family she was able to convince her parents to only write this amount in the paperwork in case of a divorce but he still had to pay £5000 for dowry along with everything else for the wedding of course (especially since he has a good job so our parents aren't paying for the wedding instead he is doing it out of his own pocket). Honestly people just try their luck wherever they can, especially the parents, what's important is that your future partner has your back and they are not the one starting all of this mess.

Or maybe the girl wanted to refuse him, and was too scared to say it, so she and her family asked for unrealistic dowry to make the guy run away :D

What the actual heck. That is mental. Feel for both, especially the girl. They screw the two out of potential happy marriage. These things however exist within society. Pretty common. Trust me. I'm a dude, and I know! Have thrown a couple of ridiculous demands straight back at their faces. Bengali cultures typically demand 8k in cash PLUS gold worth another 6k. It's insane.

Don’t confuse culture with religion. Dowry goes to the wife(not the parents and husband can’t take it back once they get married or divorce!!), and it’s whatever the husband can give according to his financial status. The parents or her shouldn’t be asking for anything.smh🤦♀️

Ruby Senpai exactly I went on singlemuslim and was shocked by the amount of men who said 'I won't ask my wife to pay me a dowry' I was like well she shouldn't be anyways, Hindu women pay the husband, in Islam husband pays his wife. Weird how some guys don't know this!!

Najma M. It's not a matter of misogyny. A lot of girls have high expectations but just want to sit on the couch all day on instagram and don't offer anything to their spouses in the form of financial, domestic, or even emotional support. If his job is to support you financially and you expect or value a great car, cell phone, home, clothes etc. in your marriage, then as his wife you should be doing your best to fulfill your role as his wife and support him. How you do that is upto you as a couple to decide what your comfortable doing whether it's picking up a full time job to help the both of you or helping out around the house while he's at work. I've seen a lot of girls in my own friends circle wreck their marriage by being unreasonably selfish and demanding from the outset of their marriage and getting progressively worse with their mean attitudes over not getting the newest phone or not being able to go on vacations like the rest of their couple friends. They literally sit at home all day and compare their lives to what their friends post on instagram and then get upset over what they don't have. The point is a man can only provide you with so much, so you should either work hard with him to keep yourself and him happy or just be appreciative of whatever he does bring home. I genuinely don't feel this was an issue of misogyny. I've been married for two years almost and just looking amongst my own friends circle I fear for the expectations both girls and boys bring into their marriages and how it leads to divorce within the first year or so.

Najma M. ‘Did you know that the majority of men treat women like objects?’ Your referring to the fact that the part of a mans brain that lights up when he sees ‘tools’ is the same part as when he sees an attractive woman. This is evidence of nothing. Cite your sources with your comments. That is such a sad and hateful view to have of men. They are your father, brothers, uncles and sons.

I really think parents who ask for unrealistic amount of money from the guy don't really want this guy to marry their daughter. They don't have a legit reason to say no to him for marring their daughter so they us the money thing as an excuse to get rid of him. I really believe that's the reason behind all this.
@maryamalmarar51167 жыл бұрын
In Dubai the dowery is not very expensive 30,000$. The expensive thing is the groom also gives the girl nearly 150,000$ for the dress and jewelry and everything. Then the wedding venue and everything costs 50,000$. So in total you spend 230,000$.

Why should he give her separate money for the dress and jewelry? That's just insane! She should use the dowry money for that or take it form her parents. After all she's still her parents responsibility until she goes to her husband's home for good that's when he becomes responsible for her finances.

if you invest in a good diamond ring it doesnt. 3k or4k is not that much for a good diamond
@poisonedchalice7 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit unsure about diamonds from an Islamic perspective. If you were to buy gold you'd be required to pay zakat on that whereas for diamonds, which may cost as much as gold if not more, you wouldn't. Some say it brings bad luck and taint marriage for that reason.
@useruvwxyz7 жыл бұрын
Rosebud I don't think so. zakat on a tiny gold ring is not applicable.

I believe I've read that there are mant ways to determine the right amount of Mahr, one of them is based upon the man's yearly income, for example if he earned 60k per annum, he would pay that amount either as a daily allowance or all of it on the day of Nikkah, this is of course to protect the woman, but also, if he was to disappear, she would be able to feed herself and her offspring if any, in such case. But of course, if his income is less than what is expected of him to pay, it could be due to several reasons, 1. the family wants to ensure their daughter's security, and determine whether he is serious or not. 2. The family doesn't actually like the guy and has no good reason to refuse so they use this as a way of getting rid of him, 3. Sometimes there are family feuds, jealousy and envy of others in the family who may have gotten more mahr etc. At the end of the day, Mahr isn't putting a price on the woman, you're not selling her off, you're marrying her away, with respect and honour, some families really lose the plot, and it's shame because as Dina said there is a marriage crisis in the Muslim community because young men and women are having to jump too many hoops to get married, and it's only creating more fitna and fasad, so really these adamant parents need a reality check.

People inthe comment section dont understand anything! The mahr is supposed to protect a woman and her children if her husband dies or leaves her. If she asks for nothing he could just abandon her with a child broke and alone. The fathers right. He wants her to travel to a different country. Which means he could leave with no money to even get a ticket back home.
@samantha.mariam7 жыл бұрын
xXxbaxroxXx I hear what you're saying but 60k? I think that's extremely unfair and it's abusing the meaning behind the mahr. 60k is above the average YEARLY salary of a lot of western countries. It was completely unreasonable to ask for such a high sum and that greed prevented two people from getting married

xXxbaxroxXx tell the wife to get a job
@Myview2467 жыл бұрын
Savage Longbottom You must either be a child or a non Muslim. If they are practicing muslims chances are the man won't want his wife to work. And realistically most of them don't want her working, especially if he grew up with a stay at home mother chances are he wants the same for a wife. So that is why she needs a good mahr and can't just be told to 'get a job'
@Saif-kd1jt7 жыл бұрын
Sadiya S so muslim women aren't allowed to get jobs. it doesn't matter if your muslim or not women can do what they like
@antwto87846 жыл бұрын
Savage Longbottom you’re not a Muslim so you clearly don’t understand. In Islam there’s certain rules and regulations men and women both have to follow. They say even if a man on low wage marries a billionaire woman he still has to be the one who provides for her and he is NOT ALLOWED to ask her for her money or expect her to pay towards anything. Look it up, she can refuse if she wants, she won’t be sinning for it as it clearly says it’s the mans DUTY to provide for wife and kids and if he can’t he shouldn’t marry
