Thank you for bringing this up. It is very touching because I feel that a lot of people understand my struggles. I suffered from bipolar disorder and my husband is schizoaffective. My mother in law is also bipolar and very often relapse. She will trigger my husband who will in turn trigger me. A lot of times I wanted to walk away. Seeing how others also struggled help me realise I am not alone.

I am absolutely loving the conversations that are opening up about mental health. I personally struggle with depression and and an eating disorder, and I'm fully aware that my family supports and tries to understand my condition as much as they can. I see them going to great lengths to ensure my safety and happiness. It makes me wonder whether I am just becoming a burden or placing extra and unnecessary stress in their lives. But my mom tells me constantly not to think this way. We help each other. We all have our struggles. We are here for each other. We take care of each other no matter what. Mental health is an important yet invisible pillar of health. We should take care of it just like we take care of our physical health. Thank you for this wonderful video.

love this community so much. Yes, you can't snap out of it. mental illness is not a temporary state of mind, it disrupts you physiologically and psychologically. Judgment is not what patients need, all we need in this society is more care and love. To anyone struggling with mental illnesses, or basically any hardships, press on! You're doing great, I am very proud of you and remember that rainbows always come after storms!

Mental illness is still, sadly, a taboo topic in sg and i hope people dont blame the victims for their mental illness. No one wants to be labelled as a person with mental illness. It's something we cannot control so please stop victim blaming, saying that they "deserved it" and their "mentality is too weak" etc... I remember when i was first dignosed with depression. My parents, like typical asian parents, blamed me saying that "your sister have depression now you have depression? Why like that?" They talk as if i WANT this to happen to me. I do not want depression. You cant choose to accept or reject a mental illness if you have one. So i hope people are more open-minded about this because social support is very important in one's recovery❤ and to everyone who overcame their mental illness, you did a good job and to everyone still fighting, keep fighting and you will get there someday!! Dont give up❤

4:10 This is very important. Loving someone else does not mean abandoning yourself. No human being on this earth is easy to love. It is a choice and hard work. And a big part of that work is taking care of yourself and having boundaries.

Thank you for the video. I had depression since puberty because of multiple factors out of my control. I didn't know it was a disorder, I was conditioned by my family that it was something wrong with my attitude or personality. I only sought help from professional counsellors at age 26/27 after suicidal thoughts returned so strongly. I had to do it without my family's knowledge because of their mindset "if you have a problem you must only keep it in the family and tell us only." But I can't because their reactions made everything worse, eg "Be grateful, last time we didn't have so much nice food.", "Smile more", "Because you didn't do ___ enough"... How can I confide in them? My counsellors from SAMH and Fei Yue were a godsend, they started me on my recovery journey. Now I'm so much better, but I still couldn't tell my family what happened. I wish I could and I wish they will understand. I'm so happy for these people that they have such supportive family members, what I've gone through is mild compared to them.

"To say I love you... doesn't justify, because to me, CARE, encompasses all those feelings". This resonates with me! I mean You can tell someone you love them and they'll hear it but when your actions show that you care for them.. they will feel it.

I'm an occupational therapy student, and during my final year of diploma (2019) we were assigned to the psychiatric department. The opportunity to communicate and engage with clients in the psy ward may be one of the most unforgettable experience ever. We had to do a case study on a chosen patient, so we had the liberty to go through their folders and read through the history, plus sitting in meetings with psychiatrists giving explanation on new cases. It was definitely an eye opening experience, and I still remember the faces and names of some of the most memorable patients then. They were like our friends though being muchhh older than us haha the youngest we've had in the ward was a high schooler and reading through his folder made my heart cry for him cuz he had a dream but due to his condition he got warded, and he had to see other patients leave one by one as he stayed there. One morning, he even waved and yelled out me and my friend's name from the ward cuz he saw us walking into the hospital from the gate lol asking if we'll be going to the ward later 🤭

What he said about having wings and being shackled to the ground is almost like he was describing the hypomania and depression that can change your mood even over a matter of hours. My mom suffered from schizophrenia. My father and my 3 other siblings refused to care for her when she suffered relapses because they had no idea how to help her... the first step is to see a psychiatrist but so many people are scared to do that for the stigma of finally admitting they or their family members are mentally unwell. The 2nd step is to ensure medical advice is followed, whether it's hospitalization or CONSISTANT oral/ intravenous medication. The last step is the most important - repeat follow up visits with your psychiatrist. It's a lifelong illness. Finally, patients themselves are clever enough to know whether someone really cares for them. And they will want to get treatment if you really care. Compassion and patience are what moves them.

Last year, I was admitted into IMH quite a number of times. I stayed at the normal ward (Ward 22B for women) and the Sayang Ward which is more expensive, but nothing was working. My mental health was deteriorating every day and I started to think of suicide. My mom decided to try moving me to the Mood Disorders Unit there after receiving advice from my cousin's husband who works at IMH. There's where I met Faith, who works at MDU. Through the activities held there I really got better gradually, though I still got readmitted a number of times. I really like how Faith encouraged me during those trying times and I am eternally grateful to her and her coworker Jerlyn for helping me. Side note: The food there is really yucky though so I always looked forward to my mom dabao for me haha xD

Jesus..I was dry faced at the beginning of the video..not now. I too have bipolar disorder. It is isolating..you do feel alone, even when you’re not physically alone..I do feel like a burden, always. I have an angel, he is my husband.

Even they are with mental health. But the way they express their statement is clear and logic. At the same time, I can imagine the situation when they are being locked in second character.

Well, what you see on tv is not real at all. Most behave pretty normal.

I have dissociative identity disorder and I am a sociopath . I could not tell my family about my condition (only my psychiatrist knows) and I’m afraid one day they will find out about the truth

TQVM OGS for this enlightening post! The participants in this post are so inspiring! I feel so uplifted as I also love and live with one! I have a question, like what, how and why do people end up with mental problems? Did the stigma of poverty, their upbringing, family, societal or work stress got them into this predicament? Q2 Are they still on medications? Please help me with answers.🙏 TQ.🌹 Oh how I wish I live in SG!

yes, to your question, kah lim is still on medications and his monthly injection, as he is one that never rest, having the medication will help him to rest , sleep throughout the night thus his illness can be under control n he can think what is right and what is not right . is just like having diabetic n high blood, just need to continue the medications so for him is mind under control for disorder thinking. Also it does not effect his gifted talents, painting.

A distorted mind inflamed with fires of exuberance has once given me the happiest enriching moments of life far beyond one's imaginations. I used to reproach myself for owning a dull and dim but healthy brain for several decades. Of course, the higher you rise, the deeper you fall, the lower you sink; no doubt every perk comes with a price to pay and nothing is free. An aberration in mental health may excite more disdainful glares and stigmatised sneers than a little word of sympathy a patient ever hopes to hear. Simply for one truthful reason that you have no choice but made known your intemperate ills and cognitive faults to the mean world that never takes kindly to the maddest freak or genius. Do you think you can return after crossing the Rubicon river? Just face your audience and do your whatever best in your role to play on this stage of life. Regrets are only shadows flitting in your wild imaginations, never corporeal. I apologise deeply for my impudent reply to a peer support specialist at IMH.
