This story is another doozy from r/TalesFromTheFrontDesk! Just about every night auditor has dealt with the issue of people not understanding that just because it's past midnight and now technically the day of arrival, that doesn't automatically mean you can be checked into a room right then and there. That is SUCH a common misunderstanding. But it's definitely NOT common to have someone insist they can just sleep in the lobby instead. Like... WHAT?!
If you have a story of your experiences working at hotels, or just in customer service in general, please share it with me! I may even make a skit out of it! 😉

Sounds to me like this person wanted to stay there on the night in question, but realized the hotel was already sold out. So she booked for the following night and then expected them to kick some random person out after midnight to accommodate her because she is a "super high elite member." Then she realized that status doesn't actually get you "the Queen of England" kind of treatment and threw a fit. No amount of jet lag or lack of sleep makes a person that ignorant.

Most of the time, it's because they get too comfortable having their butts kissed by hotel staff so when they don't get their way it creates a cognitive dissonance where they can't reconcile the fact that the staff literally can't do anything extra to accommodate them.

I work overnight at a hotel that sells out frequently this time of year. I cannot count how many times people try to check in for the next day any time between 12:01 am and 7 am for a reservation for that evening. The only way that some people understand is asking when they stay at a hotel do they kick you out at midnight? Well no you stay until the next morning. @42ayla Yup, I stayed an airport hotel in London on a half-day stay. Got in from Scotland around 4 am, sat on my bags for 4 hours until the ticketing counter opened, and then had 13 hours until my flight to the US. I was in my early 20s, so originally my plan was to hang out at the airport all day. By the time I got to the ticket counter, I learned I couldn't check in that early. As I was exhausted and not up to traipsing through London to a youth hostel and back, I realized the half-day hotel price was well worth it.

One time a hotel we booked online somehow changed the name under our reservation from my dad's first name last name to last name last name. So it would be Smith Smith and not John Smith for example. We showed the print out reservation as John Smith and the numbers matched. Then my dad's work laptop went missing from inside the room and somehow ended up behind the front desk as lost and found in the lobby. Police were called that day to report theft and cameras were checked. The maid didn't change the reservation name but she did leave the room with the laptop and left it in the lobby to report it as lost and found.

The manager was very apologetic and swore that he'd make sure it never happens again. They paid for our room at the other hotel for that night and we stayed the rest of the time at the original hotel, had zero other issues. You're about to cross a timezone, which means it's now tomorrow at that hotel and if you book now even though you think you're booking for today - because it's still today here - you're actually booking for tomorrow." I looked at the reservation I was about to book and it had the current day. I looked back at the clerk. I looked at the reservation with the current day. I looked back at the clerk. Quite a few years ago we were going to the July NASCAR race in Daytona but we’re staying north near Jacksonville. It would be very, very late/early morning before we got back to the hotel - so we talked with the desk and they made sure we could “check in” (sort of) early and then pick up our keys when we got back!

I've never had this issue booking a hotel room. The only time I ever used a travel agent was for a 2-week long trip in multiple countries. Getting a hotel for a one-night stay is not that complicated.

If thats what she considers being treated badly, i think she needs to grow some thicker skin. Jess did all the work to find her accomodations and was able to get it at the same rate of their own hotel. Honestly, who would want to sleep in a lobby when theres a bed waiting for them down the street or whatever.

I would actually appreciate a front desk person make an exception for her. Yes you don't want people sleeping on the couch like they're homeless and taking up the whole space but if it's in the middle of the night and nobody's there and like she said she's just waiting for her room in a few hours, so I would just let her

She's waiting for her room in like a day. And there was a hotel nearby that is willing to give her a room for same price right now. So why should the fron desk person make any exceptions?

See this is so annoying because I was in a similar situation with my mom one time but they just said bye and we had to find alternative accommodations ourselves. Like I understand that there was little the hotel could do but it would have been such a nice touch to go out of your way to find the guest some place else to stay especially when it’s nearby.

I don't either! I watched a KZbin video (real life situation) where the guest was trying to check in during the overnight shift for the next night, and he couldn't accept that he couldn't check in since it was the same calendar date. The number of people arguing with me in the comments blew my mind. Some said that you should get 24 hours in the room starting from whatever time you arrive. I asked how you would possibly staff housekeeping or make reservations for that kind of schedule, but no one had any reasonable answers. Shocking. 😅

These people who supposedly believe that their booking starts as soon as the calendar ticks over are guilty of trying to have it both ways - they want to pay for one day, but occupy the room until checkout time the next day. I'm sure they do not expect to be kicked out of their rooms at the stroke of midnight. Hotels already emphasise that people are booking for nights, not days, but I guess people will continue to try to interpret things in a way that most advantages themselves.

Guest: “Why can’t you just check me into the room?!” Audit: “…Because somebody is sleeping in it right now.” Two weeks ago I had a guest show up around 2AM on the audit shift. No big deal, except all of our rooms had been checked in and we were at maximum capacity except for some out of order rooms that deserved to be excluded. However, you guessed it, her reservation was for that calendar date for afternoon check in about thirteen hours early.

Hey Jessica. Great video as usual. A big fan of your work. So, I had this thought. In most hotels, the check-in time is 3PM and the check-out time is 12noon. So, if you check in at 3 PM and check out at 12, you are not staying 24 hours or a full day at the hotel, but you are charged for a whole day. I know the time between the check-out and the next check-in is when the housekeeping would clean the rooms and keep it ready for the next guest. But, I just felt this wasn't fair. I mean, if the hotel has a early check-in and late check-out fee, then it is not fair that you are charged for 24 hours though you don't stay for 24 hours. Just a random thought I had.

"You just don't care." ...uh, she just made you reservations at a different hotel, something she did not need to do. She could have just as easily kicked you out onto the street to sleep in your car, lady. Back in my day, customers were grateful for service...

Are there really people out there who don't understand that after midnight is part of the morning? That is, if it's Suday night and it just went past midnight, it doesn't become Monday night but rather Monday morning. Otherwise, the day time would be sandwiched in between two Monday nights and that doesn't make sense.
