I dated/lived with a girl with DID. I watched this with a friend of mine after my girlfriend and I broke up. I briefly told my friend about my ex and as we watched Split together and different info of DID was dropped during the movie, my friend would glance at me quizzically, silently asking if what the film said was true. I nodded to him every single time. About the only thing that wasn't true, was the full body transformation with super human powers. As another commenter mentioned briefly, there are SO many kids these days "self diagnosing" with DID because they think it'll get them attention, make them seem "cool" or garner sympathy. It's the "in" thing right now to have a mental illness or disorder and the more "severe", the more bragging rights and excuses you have. But DID is NOT a laughing matter. It cannot be taken lightly and should never be used to gain attention. It is a very serious and fucking terrifying illness that most likely will ruin your life and the lives of your loved ones. Most DID cases or personalities are born from extreme trauma and abuse, in the case of Kevin, his first personalities developing as a child when his mother was physically abusing him, it's a self defense tactic from the brain in an effort to make one forget the trauma, if even temporarily. A LOT of people who suffer from DID don't even realize it until well into their adult life. DID is not a badge of honor to be worn and flash around proudly. Someone who thinks they may be suffering from DID should seek professional mental help immediately, and people who claim they have it but test negatively for it should also pursue therapy or counseling. Again, it's nothing to laugh at or joke about and it is not something you can "self diagnose" and you should never hope you have it. Pray that you don't.
@somegrill7561 Жыл бұрын
There’s a lot more fairness than that in this movie 😂
@CROWMOTHERmusic Жыл бұрын
I have DID and this is exactly the right thing to say. You’re not supposed to point out a system to someone who doesn’t know, under no circumstances should you diagnose. DID is often caused by abuse as a child, I endured decades and only just began to acknowledge anything had happened. I’m working with state hospitals and a team of therapists, case managers, psychiatrists (to manage ptsd symptoms, DID isn’t treated medicinally) and it’s a lot but it’s necessary. I’m thankful for my wonderful husband and daughter and friends who know my names and how to tell us apart, kid and husband have never gotten it wrong it’s validating to be seen for who we are as both individuals and as a whole. I’m a system of 34, each of us has our role, most of it to protect the host from further harm. Have never done anything dangerous, have been married 7 years, have a wonderful career and homeschool. It’s terribly difficult especially because I also have a neurological disorder and wheelchair adaptations now, but all I know is that I want to provide a space that’s happy healthy comfortable and safe for my family to experience their lives, and to spread love and joy through music 🥰 Rambling aside- DID isn’t glamorous and it’s manageable but you have to start with intake, not with a diagnosis, and let your team help you identify your needs- not the Internet ♥️

dissociative identity disorder is so much more interesting than this movie makes it out to be, just researched it and holy damn it's insane the brain can do that like I mean, as an example, alters can even be different species or speak different languages that the host doesn't speak, that's insanely fascinating
@MrHoll87 Жыл бұрын
What do you mean "different species"? One thing that surprises people is alters can be allergic or not allergic to certain things other alters can. For example, my ex girlfriend was allergic to tuna an couldn't stand the smell of it, but one of her alters was NOT allergic to and LOVED to eat it. Most of her alters loved dogs, but one or two of them were terrified of our dog, and our dog only trusted certain alters as well.
@trans_diflu0r0ethane Жыл бұрын
@@MrHoll87 @John apparently some people can develop non-human alters though I believe it's more rare my best guess is it's probably from dehumanization, say during a traumatic event someone was repeatedly called the name of an animal like "filthy dog" and they might develop an alter that thinks they're an animal (more specifically a dog) alternatively it could possibly be from the body trying to cope by creating an alter form of what the host's favorite animals are as comfort, not really sure as I've never met anyone before with non-human alters, it is certainly interesting though there are probably numerous studies that bring it up but it's pretty late in the morning so I'm not gonna take the time to look for them hope I made sense!
