I wanted to share something my vet shared with me. One of our girls has been egg bound twice with a soft eggs. When the eggs are soft it can be very difficult to push them out, and they can break leading to infection. The vet recommended warming some saline then inserting it into her vent. You are basically flushing their vent with the saline using a syringe or empty enema. She passed the egg within a few hours.

Hmmm... when one of my girls was eggbound, I sat her in warm water with plain Epsom salt for about 20 minutes. She passed the egg shortly after, and has been fine ever since. I do wonder if it could possibly be that they're deficient in some type of salt in their body. #thingsthatmakeyougohmmm

The vets where I live would laugh me right off the phone should I call them about a chicken (I have before, that’s why I know this). They also told me (probably to dissuade me), that they would charge me for an “exotic” animal. They up the prices for exotic animals. Needless to say, I try my best. I have one chicken left, and I love her to pieces! Thank you for your knowledge… my neighbor next door told me about egg binding when I first got my chickens, and said it’s a death sentence. I don’t care…I’ll do what I have to do for my chickens. My baby girl is old and no longer lays. She just enjoys being with us and enjoying her life!

My champion barred rock hen got egg bound about fifteen years ago. My vet got her cleaned out without surgery, and then told me I actually fed her (and her sisters) too well. He said it was obvious due to her feather and skin condition. I was shocked that there was such a possibility, but he was adamant that I cut back on the vitamins and proteins to just slightly above the standard for laying chickens. The hens were not happy to lose their hot morning mash made of fermented feed pearls, vitamin powder, fly larva, grains, olive oil, and minerals, but they adjusted and learned quickly that when they came into the garage and their cages at night I'd make up for it. There was no loss of feather or body condition, either. The warm baths work so well just for general health and egg laying, too. All my girls since have come to love their spa days. My roo - not so much but what can you do?

My hen, Jefa was egg bound one time! (And yes, she was the boss 😅.) I gave her a warm Epson salt bath and then let her dry off by the warm wood stove. She passed the soft shell egg, and we were SO relieved!! I caught on that Jefa was in distress when I went to lock up the girls for the night and noticed Jefa was barring down and her vent was kind of pulsing, for lack of a better word. Anyways, knowing your chickens is key ❤. It was my first experience with an egg bound hen but I was able to spot it and help her in time. I then put her on the REST method until she was able to lay a full formed egg with no issues before I put her back with her flock.

I just dealt with two cases. One was soft shelled, that was broken inside of her. Very good natural antibio is coated silver, just one drop is as powerful as a whole bottle of colloidal silver, and yet very gentle. I alternated it internally with oregano extract oil (not essential oil!) in a scrambled egg with calcium, epsom salt bath with lavender, and olive oil lubricant inside of oviduct, and then I was able to pull it out. It was all squished broken, with sharp edges, but luckily mostly one piece. It had scraped her insides while it was inside her, but I sprayed her vent, with a very strong solution of coated silver, and she was almost reborn the next day. I highly suggest the coated silver, it has helped me with my birds so much! Just one drop for internal use and thats it!

Thanks Dahlia for the info. Unfortuantly I don't have a vet in my area or the next town over. So I am on my own. But I have had one that acted strangely at 8 mths old. Just stood there and wouldn't move. My rooster and other chickens were picking on her. So I took her in for 3 hours in a quiet area. Gave her a warm epsom salt bath soak for 20 mins. Fried her an egg and gave her plenty of water. After 3 hours she seemed more perky. I returned her to the flock and from that point on she seemed fine and the other chickens were no longer bothering her. Not sure what was wrong but she did lay an egg later.

I have a hyline brown (Miss Cluck) that often lays a "separated egg", meaning the yolk is layed with no shell, and the shell is by itself, either a rubbery balloon or a mass of crinkled hard shell. I usually REST her when it happens, but a few times a epsom salts bath was required. She also has layed HUGE double yolkers! ❤
@tabp8448
@tabp8448 Ай бұрын
I have a brown leghorn that is similar. When she was younger, she laid almost every other day, but almost always a double yolker. She's older now, and still lays a very large single yolk egg every few days. I'm sure that has been hard on her body though.

I was wondering if a clean syringe with coconut oil, or olive oil can be injected slowly into her vent to help the egg come out? In the past, I gave one of my hens the warm epsom salt bath, and a portion of one of my own calcium tablets(that was about 7 years ago, and she is 8 years old now) She laid her egg that same afternoon, but I have wondered "what if that doesn't work?"

I'm so happy that Mrs. Puff is ok. I've had to deal with that before and it is no fun at all. Luckily for me the epsom salt bath worked on one hen. Oil helped me get a broken softshell out of another hen's bum. The poor thing was straining so hard. When I finally got it out, it smelled horrible; so she got some mild antibiotics and is doing fine now.

Hi, I just found your channel and I have a question, I have 7 hens and 1 rooster. For the last 5+ days, we have only been getting 1 egg. I haven't noticed any of the symptoms that you talked about but I was just wondering/wanting your opinion if this could be causing the others to not be laying right now? I know that they have been stressed lately because of the rooster. Several of them had their backs completely devoid of all of their feathers, a couple of them are starting to get their feathers back but another couple of them still don't have all of their feathers yet.(I hope that makes sense). Should I try giving them each a spa day in Epsom salt or should I try other options? Like I said I haven't noticed any of the symptoms that you mentioned,or do you think that it could be something else that I need to try for them. My flock are all Black Australorps and up until last week, we were getting 6-7 eggs per day. I also wanted to say that we live in the mtns of VA. TIA for any information that you can give to me.

Good day Dahlia, I am wondering if you could help me with keeping my chickens in a pen apposed to free range! They have free ranged basically with no problems from predators in four years. I probably only lost three birds hawk or fox. I recently got a rooster because I had a broody hen. Pretty much right off the bat I’ve lost five chickens from a fox and I believe two from a hawk. I live in the woods. I’m well aware of predators. The pen goes into the woods. It is about 40‘ x 40‘ with the coupe within. I have been keeping them in most of the day and to me they do not seem very happy. It’s more shady than son no grass I have straw down, there’s things for them to roost on. I tried to put things in for entertainment. I let them out days ago about 6:30 PM and yes, I lost another hand no feathers no sound I figure Hawk! I have my broody in the coop on eggs right now. The chicken house is 8‘ x 8‘ and 8 foot tall it weighs a ton. I’m trying to figure out how to get more sunlight and of course some grass for them. I know this is Long, if you could guide or have any ideas, please share! I love letting them out, but I hate losing them 😢 I actually thought it was because of the rooster letting everyone know they’re here ! I saved the rooster from being stew. He is only eight or nine months old and the owner had too many! You can tell he’s very sad about the loss of the birds that he knew was here and gone!💔🙏 I would appreciate any help! I’ve been a chicken mama for seven years and just have not had this much trouble with loss 💔😭 thank you 🙏 PS, I have plenty of ground in the backyard that is totally in the sun., Thoughts of moving the chicken house?

The bioplasma can be given anytime you feel like your chickens need a "boost." Some people just throw them on the floor and the chickens gobble them up! My hen is almost 6 years and has been laying shelless eggs about 3 times in the last 2 months and has quit laying pretty much completely. Should i supplement with calcium or just let her finally not lay? Thank you
