she said it as a way to avoid the proposal. This is a proposal by the Emperor, you do NOT have a choice when it is coming from the Emperor without a good reason. If you watch the scene again you'll notice that her parents don't say anything at first, that isn't because they are shock by the proposal, they know quite well what is happening, they are a military family after all. What they are doing is trying to figure out a way to avoid it without getting the entire family executed for embarrassing the emperor.

The fact that Shaoshang is 15 and carefully deciding this, is admirable. She clearly doesn't want to marry him but the Emporer is ready to punish anyone who denies Zisheng what he wants. She's hurt by her mother's public rejection so she feels she needs to salvage some pride. She wants to protect her family too. But she doesn't want to make a blind decision out of hurt and fear. So she asks Zisheng if he is still willing knowing she is a girl even her mother would reject. When he declares she's perfect for him, then she makes her decision. She won't be forced. It's sad and brave.

I do believe that she would have warmed up to LBY eventually but LBY clearly thought, for likely many reasons, that he needed to push up his timetable much faster than he would have preferred. Loosing her last time to another suitor, knowing that there are others that have intentions for her, etc. are all reasons he pushed up his timetable and "forced" the marriage.

I think it works better this way as he speaks much more to his reasoning and comes across as understanding CSS and wanting her for who she is.

Both are still VERY strong characters but much better suited to each other after the show runs its course.

From a different perspective you can see why her parents reacted that way especially her mom. 1) They had left home for many years and what they see is how Niao Niao doesn't fit the conventional daughters of that era. They way she had been behaving and them trying to discipline Niao Niao had never worked. Niao Niao is literally a very very rebellious teen. 2) Knowing that fact, when suddenly the Ling Buyi proposed, their initial reaction is most probably to protect Niao Niao because marrying Ling Buyi is practically marrying into the royal family. 3) Royal families have a ton of stifling rules & regulations to learn and to live by for the rest of their lives. Moreover, with Niao Niao's temperament, they fear she wouldn't be able to survive in those court ladies scheming & politics. Her parents know that these would probably kill Niao Niao aka suffocating her. And there's a saying in Chinese, to be in the companion of The King, it is to be in the company of The Tiger because you won't know when he will eat you. 4) Don't forget at that moment, they don't "know" Ling Buyi. To them, this is just a very high position general aka almost like the King's other son, proposed to their daughter. They wouldn't know how much Ling Buyi loves their daughter enough to do ANYTHING. 5) And to turn down the King's requests, they had to use all sort of excuses to degrade Niao Niao, in order to disguise their protection. 6) After Niao Niao agreed to the marriage, you can see that her parents weren't angry, but how worried. They may have used the worst method for Niao Niao's best interest and it didn't help that her mother did not explain it clearly to her after that. And yes, this incident had indeed left a HUGE trauma to Niao Niao. Sigh... all road to hell is paved with good intentions.

The mother, on the other hand, after being absent for more than half her life, returns and turns her daughter’s desperate need for love to ashes with her constant humiliation of her young daughter, ruthless insistence on blind discipline and harsh words unrelieved by any tenderness and words of praise. i feel like a lot of people are forgetting that in this time period, woman had to act a very certain way. Especially within the palace, the rules and regulations were even more strict. The fact that Shaoshang had none of the characteristics she was suppose to have is worrying because she could very well get herself framed, shunned and killed. Parents in that time frame, especially those of nobility had VERY high standards for their kids, it’s only natural her parents, especially her mom would react and say those things. because we’re born in different time periods and behaviours are VERY different compared to ancient China, of course our first reaction is to hate on her parents but it’s much deeper than that 😊

OK from a lot of the comments here, it seems people don't quite understand or pick up on what is happening in this scene. Ling Bu Yi ask the emperor on his behalf to propose to marriage to Niao Niao. When the emperor does this, it is not a choice without a very good reason to refuse other wise you might get the entire family executed (by entire family meaning the entire family tree, servants and all), so her parents use her bad upbringing as a valid excuse to avoid this political nightmare. By that it means, Ling Bu Yi is a general that attends court and that means he has dealings with court advisors, They might hurt Niao Niao directly or indirectly just to get at him and her parents are just protecting her from that. Her Father is a low level general so he knows how bad it is up top and is quite satisfied near the bottom.

I think the theme for the whole second half of the show is that sometimes you need to give the people that you love [and that love you] the time that they need to change so that they can love you fully and in a healthy manner. While I think LBY and the mother are the key examples of this even the grandmother even coming around is important to see. CSS letting go of her childhood trauma and the HURT that LBY 's betrayal caused even needed both time and SHOCK to understand what she really wanted and needed.

It didn't help that LBY didn't announce his intentions earlier -- thus they only had their last conversations with CSS to go on in that she had NO interest in LBY. I do believe that the parents were desperate to do what was best for their daughter but picked the wrong way to do it. By saying that "she wasn't ready YET for a marriage of this importance" and arguing for time [years?] for her to become ready would have been the best way out --- but then again if everyone did the RIGHT things then they wouldn't have character arcs, we wouldn't have the ability to see them become better, etc.

I think I understand the mother. The mother WANTS a daughter like Yang Yang. The mother also does NOT want to be the mother that CSS needs but the same strict mother that raised her boys without realizing that you may need to change your parental style to best suit the child and not your own desires. There is also a lot of hurt under the surface as CSS is headstrong and rebels against her. I still think the mother loves CSS but does NOT understand her well enough -- or even what she may loose forever until its' too late. Over time the mother comes to understand what needs to be done and more closely becomes the mother that CSS always needed.

This scene sets the tone and dynamics for everyone involved. Royal and non royal. Niao Niao is so young and uncultered. She's willful and ignorant of royal protocal and it's pitfalls. Ling Buyi had to work quick to at least get engaged to her or lose her. He knows he got lucky that the first engagement fell through but at the Lantern Festival at least 4 men eyed her, including Ling Buyi. Niao Niao knew a wrong move/marriage could ruin her. Even thpugh she was scared and didn't know Ling Buyi that well she trusted his judgement. He saw her when no one else did and he trusted her. Her parents let her down and as much as she loved them and knew that they wanted better for her, her mother's scathing assesment of her failings cemented her decision to get engaged. This also cemented her feelings for the kind Empress. She could already sense the mother in her. Her parents abandonment and cruel words did too much danage. She was a broken doll looking for a home. She hoped she found it in her engagement and in her trust in the Queen. Her decisions were right for someone so young and inexperienced.

After rewatching I'm of two opinions but mostly the second --- First he didn't like the princess fainting and drawing attention away from him and CSS. Second -- and likely most importantly -- is that CSS doesn't seem as happy with the proposal as he would have liked. My assumption is that likely hurt him a lot but he's more concerned about CSS and not wanting her to feel bullied. He wanted her to agree to marry him because she could see his love for her --- not to keep her parents / family from being punished or her salvaging a "bad" situation the best that she knew how.

Vicious but also redeemable it would seem. I don't think she's being intentionally cruel but there's a lot of complicated goals and emotions going on. CSS definitely hurt her mother's feelings by not being "the perfect daughter", rebelling against her teachings, etc. Also her mother, last she understands, is that CSS was both hurt by breaking off her betrothal recently AND saying she had no intentions for LBY -- thus making the mother desperate to stop a betrothal that CSS doesn't want being forced on her. Unfortunately that hurt lead her mother to try to "help" CSS in the most hurtful way possible. In the end the mother needed time to grow and to have the shock of loosing her one & only flesh & blood daughter to better understand what she needed to do & be.

Because imperial court is full of danger,conspiracy, impeachment & constant scheming. A person marrying into royal family need to follow etiquette and rules which Shaoshang don't bother even in her house, she treats kindness equally and gives back revenge if slighted , she is petty...all the qualities that can get her killed ..in those times it also mean the whole family including servants will be executed or punished . Her parents wee away on war so neglected her education and etiquette. So they had to give worst possible reason to make the Emperor retract his proposal for ling buyi
