Alice Krige was also in Silent Hill. Another horror movie with witchy vibes. And you're writing in this video is so good. The more I review things myself the more I notice other peoples work. This was some of your best writing.

I thought this movie had so much potential with the story and the characters relationships but in the end it felt like they decided to focus on the vibes and the visuals and forgot about the rest.

Great review! This film recently showed up in my queue but I had heard nothing about it and was afraid it might be be too slow paced for an unworthy third act. But . . I'm a sucker for a good witch or haunted house story so I was on the fence. However, you sold me on it describing the cinematography and color schemes. Also recently watched 'Suspiria' so the Argento angle is a plus. Besides, it's monsoon season here and another good storm is blowing through; perfect night for giving it a chance.

I thought I was going to love this film but I didn't. I mean, I'm pagan so I thought I was going to enjoy the lore but I didn't. It felt more like a Christian way to see witches from outside, that an inner perspective, but sometimes the movie doesn't know what view wants to have about it. I think it wasn't deep enough. I loved the visual and the atmosphere but the witchy aspects were very off to me, the story it felt empty, like a random mix of things but they didn't have sense. This movie was trying to hard to be eerie that it forgot about why. Anyway, Alice character here reminded me to her character in Ghost story (1981) .

I disagree completely. This is one of my all time favorite movies. It’s perfect. I think you missed that this movie is about women, and the power of the sacred feminine. The other artists are irrelevant because they are men or female idiots. It’s about depth of female power. The soundtrack is brilliant. It puts you in mind of the eternal legacy of women. The hint is in the book the caretaker opens. Strong women subjugated. It’s about the legacy of women…past (witches) present, (Krige character), and future (the caregiver). This movie is so endlessly deep I get lost in it.

I got very strong folk horror vibes from this film.Like Witchfinder General and Blood on Satans Claw an uncredited star of the film is the lush, beautiful countryside, which for me is like another character in the film.Sometimes beautiful, sometimes ominous it adds so much to thd atmosphere of all three films.

I wish I would have liked it more than I did. I really enjoyed Alice Krige's character but the movie didn't hit home. I got to meet her recently and she extremely nice. On a didn't note do you have a list of favorite cozy horror movies. Ones that you have seen numerous times and put on when you can't find anything else. For me the movie Dead and Buried is one or any Italian horror, like Demons. Thanks

I don’t like genre movies that are more concerned about the looks rather than the scares. If you’re making a horror film, I expect horror, not beautiful imagery that looks like a shutterstock commercial. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, it’s just not the priority of a horror genre fan. I don’t think the majority of horror filmmakers really understand the genre and the expectations of the audience. Many of us won’t mind or even care if the story takes place inside a box as long as it delivers the scares we are anticipating for. Many times if the scares and/or the story is weak, they try to cover it up by scenery. That’s why every time I see beautiful shots in a horrror trailer, I immediately get the red flag. Mainly because some of the most successful horror films ever made have a simple plot and cinematography and if a movie took the time to shoot those beautiful shots then they probably sacrificed screen time from what really matters…the scary set pieces.

Definitely understand your take (and a well laid out one, as usual). This film felt like a grower. While I ended up loving it, I wish it lasted longer, too -- either as a 2+ hour movie or a mini-series as you suggested. Some of the visuals reminded me of the movie Mother! Definitely worth a watch for the atmosphere and the ideas it explores. Great review and hope you're recovering well from covid too!

Happy to see your take on She Will. I was super into this movie - until I wasn’t. I don’t know, I think you’re right about the ending feeling kind of rushed. I was super invested halfway through but then some dialogue choices, and the non-scary finale left me feeling underwhelmed. There was just so much potential in the setup. And Krige was perfect in the role. Oh well. I think I’m in the minority here. That’s good.

I did enjoy this more than I expected - though I do agree with many of the points you raise here! The main characters were brilliantly drawn, particularly loved Veronica's arc and the honest portrayal of a double mastectomy and dealing with pain. Fantastic performance from Kreige. While watching it I got the impression that some issues came down to budget restraints - had we gotten that extra half hour to expand on the lore and give the third act time to breathe, this would have been a 9 or a 10 for me! Great review Emma, had this one on my radar after you mentioned it in a previous video! A nice, spooky time despite the problems

I like this movie very much. I have been an Argento fan since I saw Suspiria in the theater when it first came out, I was about 14 or 15. I did catch the homage to Dario but I am not going to spoil it. So, yes, it is there. I love movies that make you think and stimulate discussion about the ending. It is ambiguous and can go in a couple different directions. Thanks Emma, you're the best

I love the way you even include some of the more arcane cinematic aspects such as color grading in your reviews. I notice that sort of thing (as well as the incidental music, how wide or tight certain shots are, etc.), but I feel like almost no one else I watch movies with does. Maybe they’re so into it that the movie magic happens subconsciously. I’ve watched you, Marianna of Impression Blend, Chris Stuckman, and others too much to *not* notice every little detail now!

really enjoyed alice krige in this. i thought the movie showcased well the bond between the two women and how it strengthens through the film, to the point where the main character is there for her carer in her "moment of need" and how the carer mirrors this behavior at the end of the movie. they really grow closer and each deal with their past or current tormentors. i thought the movie was visually stunning and the way the music was blended with the visuals was quite hypnotic.

I saw this last night and can't get it out of my head. I have so many questions about the story. Was there a local, practicing coven in the area back in the 16th and 17th centuries? What kind of role did indigenous people play in these covens? Were either of the main characters a re-incarnated person who had been a witch in the past that was burned at the stake? Were some of the dream sequences not dreams at all, but were life events occurring in that moment in time? I wish they had spent more time fleshing out the relationship between Veronica and her nurse as the relationship seemed to have made a 180 degree turn by the end of the movie. I really enjoyed this movie and hope to watch it again over the weekend.
