If you thought shearing Angora Goats was just for the professionals, think again! Longtime Angora Goat breeder, Pat Ross, demonstrates how you can shear your own Angora Goats on a stand on your own farm. If shearing has kept you from fulfilling your dream of owning Angora Goats, this how-to video is for you! Pat shares tips on shearing equipment, including maintenance and storage too.

I love how you go above and beyond to ensure the comfort and safety of the goat and aren't afraid to really get in to the sensitive areas to make sure they aren't nicked. I'm sure every animal you work with is thankful for the care you put into your work :)

Thank you for showing the comb positionto the skin! So many videos of sheep shearing deal with handling the animal and executing the "blows", but yours is the first Ive seen that talks about how to handle the clipper and comb in detail. I will be trying your method tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

This video was a big help. I was able to do an Icelandic ram and had no problems - your tips on holding the cutter relative to the skin helped. The wool fell off like butter. When I tried it with the Suffolks - I had more problems and the wool wouldnt cut. Will try again.

This is the BEST instructional on shearing goats I’ve found. Thank you so much! My two pygora goats thank you as well. Huge help to my confidence in doing this without nicking them and advice if I did.

Excellent narration. A lot of videos you can't hear because of the clipper noise. THIS one is clear and concise.

Thanks for the video. I have watched a few times and will watch more as I am not looking forward to doing my goats. I am very afraid of it and cutting them. Getting them to stand still enough. It is August and I thought that is when you should cut them but I was just told they are done in May and only once.

How hot do your cutter blades get on the goats skin?
@jamesross529
@jamesross529 4 жыл бұрын
They get warm to the touch but I don't let them get warm enough to burn. The key is to keep the comb and cutter sharp and use lots of oil. I use plain old 10w-30 motor oil from Walmart, the inexpensive stuff. Whenever I stop for a minute I oil up. Turn the shear off when you need more than 5 to 10 seconds to do something other than shear. Keep the cutter tension as low as possible on the comb but still enough that it will cut properly As you shear the comb and cutter heat up and you need to loosen the tension because the metal expands.

Thank you!

Most wool (goat, sheep, alpaca, etc.) is very dirty when sheared. Part of the processing process is a thorough and specific cleaning regimen, designed to keep the integrity of the curl, crimp, etc. Trust me, the final product is clean and smells good! Many cottage spinners like to purchase their fleece dirty, so they can process themselves.
@cooperolm9687

cleaning is just part of it. a sheep's wool is certainly not clean when sheared.

Seems a very long and fiddly process. Can goats not be shorn using the Bowen method, as normally done for sheep? All over in a couple of minutes, easier to stretch the skin, easier to see what you're doing. Cleaner result too.

have you EVER heard of the term - 2nd cut? Every single stroke you made on this animal, was followed by a '2nd cut' and frequently a 3rd cut! thus leaving the fleece FULL of little bits of 2nd cuts that are TOTALLY USELESS to the spinner of this yarn, not to mention all the wasted tiny bits of fleece that will be tossed out! ONE LONG SINGLE STROKE is the only way to shear an animal who's fleece is going to be used for ANYTHING other than stuffing a cushion!
