Great to see the legendary Fred Rinder there, behind the Villa lads as they come onto the field. Among Rinder's many contributions to Villa and the game, he was to start the tradition of singing "Abide With Me" before FA Cup finals. His feeling was that it was a popular song in the trenches of WW1 and it would resonate with post-War crowds, bringing a sense of dignity and sobriety to the Grand Occasion. Not only did Villa give League Football to the world, their trophy count was unsurpassed for over three quarters of the twentieth century - the original giants of the game. Hopefully Villa will be back at the top soon, ruling the roost, putting each and every plastic Jonny-come-lately club to the sword. A shout out to Sunderland, too, a great club currently going through tough times.

@TheGiantKillers4 жыл бұрын
@@TheBeeseven It is indeed. The game went down in history {though now lost in the mists of time} as the most brutal cup final anyone had witnessed and Charles Buchan speculated 40 years later that had the game been played in the post-second world war era, his former teammate Charlie Thompson and Villa's Harry Hampton would have been sent off. The crowd were expecting fireworks between Charlie Thompson and Harry Hampton who had previous and sure enough, they began kicking lumps out of each other from the first whistle. Eventually, referee Mr Adams took Thompson's name, though, it's believed not Hampton's. Clem Stephenson had the best chance of the first half but as he shaped to shoot, Charlie Gladwin clattered him for a cast-iron penalty, which you can see at 2:00 on the film. Several Sunderland players began verbally abusing Charlie Wallace as he prepared to take the spot-kick and may well have got to him as he fired tamely wide. It remained the only penalty ever missed in a cup final until John Aldridge joined the club in 1988. Suggestions of heated verbal exchanges as the teams left the field at half time were supported by the game almost falling totally out of control in the second half. Charles Buchan {In his Football monthly annual stated that one of his future press colleagues later recalled it as the most violent game of Football he'd ever seen bar a notorious semi-final between Barnsley and Everton a few years earlier that brought the Yorkshire side's participation in the final into question.} The second half would last an incredible 62 minutes before Mr Adams finally blew for full time. The unfortunate ref would be suspended by the FA for losing control of the game while Thompson and Hampton both sat out the first month of the following season through suspension. When Sunderland won the League title the following week, The FA decided it would be best not to have the two sides meet again so soon in the Charity Shield and scheduled the match as an amateur vs professionals game instead. Curiously enough, Villa and Sunderland each fielded two players in the pro team, including Hampton whose ban took effect after the game.

@John Saunders Cup Final day didn't become a standalone fixture in the programme until the post-war Television era. Into the 1950s there would have been a full programme of League games on Cup Final day. However, it was always played as near as could to the end of the season. On cup final day 1913 Villa were top of the table but the title wasn't settled until the weekend after the cup final when Sunderland clinched it. Speaking of Villa double winners, they do hold the unique distinction of being the only team to win both major domestic honours on the same day. While playing out the classic 1897 cup final against Everton, League results elsewhere fell in their favour to clinch the title on the same day.
