Sheena changed her accent to sound more American to be accepted in the American mainstream for TV roles. She got a star role in the American TV series Miami Vice once she changed her accent to sound more American. Sheena once remarked in an interview on radio "YOU GOTTA FAKE IT TO MAKE IT". Success comes at a price.

Her accent is what one would call the LuLu syndrome. She too couldn't talk in any particular accent. It was Scottish then you would hear American and then a broad mid Atantic accent. I could never figure out Prince with Sheena. Great song though.

absoluteacw going off what she said herself in recent years (and the American accent is strong now)it was due to so much time in the US and now lives there with her husband if my memory is right. It blended between the two until she lived mostly in the US from 90's onward. Oddly it's one of the easiest accents to pick up, quite a few friends who even just did exchange student years came back with whatever regional accent (we're Aussie). My best friend was born and bred in Scotland and our flat accent is more dominant and she only sounds Scottish when using typical phrases. But I know of Americans who have lived here since kids and their accent is still strong, it's oddly the more dominant one, no idea why. The Prince thing is easy, she's explained before it wasn't what was thought and best and bluntest explanation by her is on Graham Norton. She didn't send him anything, she didn't know him. They shared a sound engineer in the US and he was just down the road when she appeared on Johnny Carson. He saw it and contacted her as he wanted to write a song for her, he was known for randomly doing that. He wrote Sugar Walls for her and the explanation about the song is hilarious, a feminist had a go at her over it. She said something like "Well technically it can mean from the heart but if you want to think it's about a vagina then go for it"....and admits since it WAS Prince that wrote it that yeah, it is kinda about that lol. He's done a lot of songs sung by others that people don't know about. A better known one is due to him meeting a very young singer who had just had some huge hits and she carried a notebook in which she jotted stuff in. One was a prayer she did. She by pure chance met Prince who wanted to look at the notebook and picked up that prayer and said "This needs to be a song" and made it into one. That's "Love Thy Will Be Done" by Martika. We saw her live recently and yes, she did it in tribute to him. Apologies, there's a novel length explanation of both the accent and Prince for you lol.

She apparently moved to the US in the "early eighties" when she was in her twenties, your accent is normally fully set in late adolescence, so I would say she has "cultivated" her American accent.

She's spent so much time in the US, that's why. I've seen it a lot with the Scottish kids I grew up with who moved here bc their parents had to work here. But it's odd to see it with Sheena bc she was an adult woman (though she was young, I'll give her that).

Sorry i always thought she was overrated even back then, i am sure if it was not for the big time documentary she would most likely have been employed in a ordinary job, i feel luck had more to do with her success luck was she was handed two good songs which were smash hits this opened doors for her specially in America and the rest is history.

Tj Hill My first language is spanish,and i can tell her accent and the way she talks is very annoying. I have seen interviews with Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama and she still has her accent, she is irish and lives in L.A. since 1988!
