Yes, Carson insisted that all musical acts performed 'live' on his show. His was one of the few shows -- the 'Midnight Special' was another show that did this - and because of that we now have these great performances to view!

Actually, no....this was '87. If you look, she also performed it in '84 with her with Joan Rivers as the host and her hair was the same as in the music video.

I thought the same thing. She had some smaller hits after Strut and Sugar Walls at that point so she probably wanted to give them a classic. Too bad Prince wasn't around for a live shot at U Got the Look from 87's Sign 'O The Times, a #2 hit.

Before autotune, yes. But lip-syncing has been around a long time. It's how most musical numbers were done in movies starting in the early 1930s.
