Sheep Farming: Why Our Sheep Are In Confinement In June!/June 10, 2022

At Ewetopia Farms, as in most of Eastern Canada this spring, we have been inundated with rain. The fields are drenched and muddy. It is impossible to get onto the fields to plant crops or cut hay. But these wet conditions also affect the sheep in detrimental ways. In this video we discuss the reasons why we have decided to confine our sheep to the barns until the weather dries up. We demonstrate how we are coping with sheep indoors in June.
With sheep farming, there is always something new to learn. At Ewetopia Farms, we try to incorporate learning opportunities when we encounter them as we go through daily life on our working sheep farm. We attempt to show life as it truly is on our farm and to present things with a touch of humour. From lambing to breeding to selecting quality replacement lambs to removing manure to relaxing with the sheep - it is all part of our lives as Canadian sheep farmers!

Good morning Lynn and Arnie. Another interesting video. You are fortunate to have the option to keep the flock inside, even in June! If they were on the wet ground, as you said, you would constantly be treating lame sheep not to mention their pain and the damage to the fields. I disagree with you calling your farm a "factory " farm. You and Arnie are actively involved. Most factory farms are on a huge scale and have several employees, some of them who don't really have an interest in the animals. It's just a job and in most instances the animals never see the outdoors. For you and Arnie, this is your passion! It has to be or you wouldn't put in the hours required AND your love for what you do is obvious. So, I would term your operation a large scale, purebred seed stock farm combining the best of pasture and confinement to manage the flock for maximum comfort, minimal stress, and producing a consistent, very high quality product!! Good on you!!

I’ve said it before, will say it again. Think your combination of raising the sheep inside and outside is taking advantage of the best of both. Of course that means making weather adjustments according to which is best for the sheep mentally and physically.

It's been awhile now but they cost about $60,000 Cdn about 10 years ago for everything. However, Arnie did labour on putting up walls and curtains. Britespan put up the roof.
