Awesome video! I love seeing the more traditional herds/flocks and the landrace breeds. It’s a shame they just have to toss all that wool after the hard work. I’m not a wool guy, so I have no projects in mind, but I’m gonna at least try to use it in my garden.

So interesting to see undocked tails. Do they use their tails for anything? Do they have muscle control over the whole thing?

Yes they can move their tails. They can’t swat something like a cow can or horse, but it helps to deter insects from the rear area.

This is a brutally hard, back breaking job. To do it, just to throw the wool away is soul destroying. We use to do it the same way. Neighbours and friends would come together to help in a communal effort and we would help our neighbours to do the same. Now we make a phone call and hire contractors to shear the sheep. The social side of it has disappeared for expediency. In a way, getting contractors was the only way to go because there are far fewer family farmers nowadays.

I know all that hard work for nothing. There’s really not a market for some types of wool- not all sheep grow the same kinds of wool. Some are only carpet material quality while others you actually can make a living selling it.

You've got to be rough with them, it doesn't hurt at all though. They're very strong, sturdy animals. Not to mention if you don't shear them it causes skin diseases, parasites, over heating and eventual death.
