Thanks for your video. I recently adopted my cousin's cat that two sheep skin liners for his perches. I want to wash them. I knew I could never duplicate the highly specialized system you have, but I was intrigued to see your method. Maybe I'm a nerd-for anything to do with fibers. I own a sewing and upholstery business. It was nice to see your shop- looks like an expensive set up. People often wonder why custom work costs so much. We're not getting rich, just being fair; your shop is a perfect example of that.

Best lambskin rug cleaning vid I've seen! This was so satisfying to watch! You take better care washing this skin than how some people wash their pets! Would love to see some DIY at home cleaning solution tips from you. Are there any relatively common or easy to get household products you can recommend or warn against? I was thinking of trying some highly diluted J&J baby shampoo. I have a couple large lamb rugs I need to tackle, didn't even think to use the K9 dryer on them to blow out any loose dirt! Should the leather be conditioned with some thing after the cleaning to help it last longer? How do you deal with skins that have been dyed (I'm assuming any lamb rug that isn't an off white is not a natural color). Thank You!!

Hi Motomarta, Thank you for your kind words. We are, or should i say, was planning some DIY videos for rug cleaning. I'm sure we will get round to doing some in the not too distant future but with this pandemic we have some other things to concentrate on for now. Regards to cleaning products, i suppose different countries have different types but any washing soap that offers non harsh cleaning will suffice on sheepskins, Just make sure is "Non Bio", Has no enzymes and no solvents, So anything that states kind to your skin, simple soaps and on the acidic side. And you really need to rinse every last drop of soap residue other wise you will have dry skin and crusty wool :) . Regards dyed sheepskin, you need to test your product on the wool, i have a couple of videos showing this. Just remember urine contaminents create more problems with dye bleed. Acidic cleaners tend to be safer where dye bleed could occur, an alkaline cleaner can be tested but make sure you test gently as even an alkaline test can cause problems if done without caution. hope this helps

Should you treat the leather side of a hide with something to prevent from drying out like most leather? This is my first hair on piece of cowhide. Do you condition it differently because it has hair on?

Great video! What was the sheet for? You wrapped the rug in a sheet before putting in the centrifuge. What does that do? Sorry if you explained it I had to have my sound off because my kid is asleep. Thanks.

The fur tends to stick to the skin when rolled up, when we place it in the spinning centrifuge to spin all the water out it sometimes doesn't unravel properly so we add a sheet to create a barrier between the fur and the hide, this allows it to open up when it spins and so drains the water better ready for the drying room. Hope that explains it all,

I have a large sheep skin rug that I wash once a year (car wash sprayers). I have a clothes line but it is too heavy. In laying it out to dry, would it be faster trying to dry the leather side first?

We use a dedicated drying room so i've no idea how to advise you otherwise If you've cleaned it every year and dried it every year with no problems, then if it isn't broke, don't try and fix it. Sorry i couldn't be more helpful on this occasion.

do you run water through your spinner ? you showed soapy dirty water coming our of the machine. i believe if you ran water through the machine while its spinning until it runs clear, THEN the rug should be clean.

There was no dirty water coming out of the machine. Slightly soapy yes but not dirty. You can never rinse all the soap out of these sheepskin rugs, You would be there for days. Yes we have a rinse spin option but it was not needed on this clean. Rug came out fantastic and customer was over the moon.

I'm gonna go for it. I make body products. Gonna make castile soap with lanolin or someting. Citrus solvent for stains. Spin it in the washer and dry with fan and between two oil heaters. I have a car wash brush with a squeegee on the end u can also get the hose attachment for. Hmmmm. Cant afford to have all my rugs done. I have a pile of them. Just moved. Need them here. Cold tile floors

personally my advice would be get a professional to clean your rugs but if you do do it yourself then I'd avoid any solvents and let dry naturally. speed drying will dry them out.

@@ArcadiaRugSpa okay. No solvents. What about peroxide? I can always dye that one. Something got spilt on one. Yeah, I can't afford to have 5 sheepskin rugs cleaned. Not gonna throw them out. So I need to clean them myself. I used to clean houses so I'm not ignorant to cleaning. I tried that shampoo with lanolin from Amazon, felt like I got ripped off and the sheepskin did dry hard. I think I hung it in the sun tho. I do have lanolin. I could mix some into some castile soap and make my own. Still doing research.

Depends how bad. we can usually get them softer but we never guarantee, we have a specialist machine.

How can I get a sheepskin rug cleaned if I live in Atlanta, Georgia?

My partner has about 6 sheep rugs and he never took care of them.. they are covered in general crap, like bits of dry grass, bits of twigs and leaves (they are used as sleeping mats for our viking historical events). I take care of mine, so they are always like new, but now i've decided to "restore" his ones. I can take care of the fluff part, but the "raw hide" part is the problem. It is bone dry, not soft and white anymore. I wanna know what I can do to restore it to the best point possible. Some parts are so hard that it almost resembles fingernails. Any tips? Thanks!

Massage a small part of the hide, sometimes they can go supple from a good massage, obviously i can't see it so be very careful, we quite often use a paint roller (no paint obviously) and roll the back of the hide and this can sometimes make the hide supple again. there are also products out there for softening the hide but i find a good massage is sufficient. Again if they are extremely brittle which i have never come across before then be really careful and take it slowly at first. let me know how you get on.

I have restored a few skins that were very hard and papery using Leather Honey off Amazon along with massage and it made a huge difference. Gentle massaging is the key.

Some parts of the fur has turned into zigzags after washing it home? What is the reason for this happening.? Should I spray it with water and then brush it while the fur is still wet.

Hi Ray Ray, when you say Zig Zag, do you mean like crinkled? Not a 100% sure what you mean. If the fur has crinkled you could try a dog hair brush, this sometimes can help fluff up the fur but it may relax back to zig zag again. we brush all our sheepskins after they have been cleaned and dried.

Not sure what you guys have in the USA but anything thats mild, no solvents, non bio a must so no enzymes. and try and find somethink on the acidic side. We have fairy non bio over here that is great for home DIY, but must be rinsed out thoroughly. Hope this helps

Hi Koez, just a mild soap thats slightly acidic, with no harsh products, steer clear of solvents or anything that could dry out the skins natural softness. And as minimal as possible, so using less is better unless its really filthy then i'm afraid you'd have to sacrifice a stiffer skin for a cleaner hide. Hope this helps.

All depends on your cleaning process and what cleaning solutions you have used. Just go steady and gentle and see how it reacts. use a soft brush and start by brushing it like you would brush tangled hair on your head if that makes sense. If it starts to shed heavily then stop and find an expert you can take it too. hope this helps

@@teressadorman3826 Hard to comment without seeing, You should always use a non biological detergent which has no solvents or harmful chemicals that can dry out the hide, its very hard to advise on sheepskin cleaning DIY, as a lot has to do with facilities and equipment especially for rinsing and drying. If i was to advise i would say try cleaning and rinsing with just water, and see if that helps, make sure to dry as quickly as possible but with cool air rather than high heat. hope this helps.

You can't really clean rugs without specialist equipment and knowledge. I suppose thats why we do so well.

We clean around 10 to 20 sheepskins a month like this, Very rare we have any problems with drying out, but when we eventual do its easily rectified.

Hi Faith, Avoid harsh chemicals when washing sheepskin, harsh chems will dry out the hide, treat the hide like its a sensitive skin when choosing your soap and make sure you rinse thoroughly, soap residue left in the hide will create stiffness, you can massage stiffness out if it does happen, a cold tumble dryer can sometimes aid stiffness, failing that you ccan just massage and ripple the hide to loosen the stiffness, hope this helps.

Felting is a completely different process, Sheepskins felt more just in normal household use, our cleaning process actually reverses some natural use felting, especially at the air dusting stage which helps separate the fibres and prepare it for cleaning. We also add some fabric softener to our cleaning process to aid with untangling fibres. Great question, hope this helps answer it a little.

Depends on how expensive the sheepskin you want to purchase is? Some sheepskins are cheaply processed, have a split skin so not as durable and are really cheap to purchase, others go through a far superior process and have full hides that have not been split so are better quality and will last a life time if looked after properly, these are expensive, you then get some middle priced sheepskins and also you have sentimental sheepskins, presents from loved ones or a memory that you don't want to throw away. If yours is the first description I made then yes, cheaper to buy another one, if it falls into the other categories then I would say personally, they are worth having cleaned properly. We have an airflex storm 600. Awesome machines for carpet cleaning, Not sure i would use on sheepskins though, hose pipe or pressure washer from a distance, then drip dry would be a better option in my opinion. Just to clarify, I'm not saying you can't. I just wouldn't myself personally. Hope that helps.

What was the point of making a video on how to clean a rug if before THE MOST IMPORTANT PART you say we have our own special cleaning solution we’ve developed because “the last thing you want to do is use a solution that will leave the rug hard as cardboard” and then not even offer us an alternative.

Hi Jeffery, This is a "How WE clean a sheepskin rug" or how most professionals should clean a sheepskin rug so you can see how its done properly, I am thinking of doing a DIY sheepskin rug video for the general public but its not easy without good rinsing and drying equipment. But regarding a safe product for cleaning, if you can get anything that has no harsh chemicals, no solvents or enzymes and is gentle on wool then you should be okay as long as you rinse properly, hope this helps.
