Sheeran Looper Plus: Everything I Like (but something's missing - and how I got around it)

I've been looping at my gigs for years, starting with the Digitech Jamman and prior to the Sheeran Looper Plus, the Boss RC500. After receiving the Sheeran Looper Plus, I have taken it to a few gigs already and given it a good test drive. Here's what I've noticed that I hadn't seen in any other videos including one strange omission. Also discuss the differences between the RC500 vs Sheeran Looper Plus.

Thank you for the video. No way to control volume is a definite deal breaker.

Hi Trevor. Thank you for the quality review. I really appreciate it. If I already have a Boss RC-500, does it make sense switching to a Sheeran Looper+ if volume control is not critical to me. How does the Sheeran Looper+ compare to the Boss RC-500 in terms of usability, intuitiveness, simplicity, and sound quality? Or to put the question another way: if price didn't matter and you had to choose between these two models, which one would you choose?

Hi Trevor! I was so glad when other people started speaking out about their similar problem regarding the need for loop volume control! I play solo acoustic guitar, and, like you, I don't want to change the way I play after so many years! My observation is that, I could get by with boosting my lead, but it seems to me that, when I create a loop, that the loop is actually a little louder than it was when I was creating it! So, what do I do, besides creating more tickets with HeadRush? I don't know, but I like this looper more than any other loop pedal I have used! It ain't over-complicated, and I just don't need a lot of options, particularly onboard drums! When I play, I run my drum machine into one input, and my guitar into another...voila! Instant background track! It just seems louder whenever I hit the play button! Maybe I can assign the loop to one of the two output channels, and adjust the volume at my mixer. Probably not, but I need to read up on that! Anyway, let's hope that HeadRush addresses this soon, and fills that one little spot in the options menu! Cheers, and keep on rockin'!

A couple of other obvious simple things missing. 1. You can't run a continuous record -> playback -> record over -> playback loop. You're required to go into dub mode. I got around this by using a pedal and assigning pedal 1 to change track (Track) and pedal 2 to erase. Then I can record A, change to track B, record B, change to track A, erase A, record A... 2. The split out logic is exactly reverse of what it should be, in fact I can't think of a use case for the way it is now. It should be that record A, loop A, should play out one channel, and then all the overdubs (or clean audio) should play out the other channel. This would solve your problem Traver in the best way. That is you could set a clean accoustic loop that would play back on the clean channel and any live or overdub would come out the other channel which could be channelled to the lead amp. Instead, in split mode, the recorded track will always play out the other channel, not useful.

I’ve always boosted my lead stuff, I don’t think I would have even noticed the volume thing. I’ve always used my RC 20 that way. My looper is at the end of my board. It is a good thing to know, I’m sure a lot of acoustic player are interested in this pedal.

Nice review Trevor. I’ve got a simpler RC-3 which I just use at home to create backing tracks to practice over. Larger pedals would definitely be better for live situations.

I agree about the lack of playback volume control. It might be a lot to ask on a small unit, but I’d also like to pan layers in a stereo field. In places where you can get effective performance stereo, panning can make a big difference.

Other than the volume thing, it is a great pedal. I've never messed with the stereo thing - I'll have to give that a shot

I use a mixer in front of the looper to achieve this. Very satisfying. The RC500 has track-specific panning (i.e. track A can be panned left, track B right) -- that's the closest I have found.

undo/redo has a BIG latency !!!! (between 0,5s and 1sec) even with an externa footswitch. We're in 2024 and not in 1990. I'm really annoyed about that, becouse I love the design and the simple user interface. If they don't fix that, I will send it back, because thats an absolut no go for me! I need a instant undo/redo function to start and stop backings and so...

I’m confused. Isn’t the volume controlled by the knob labeled “Main”?
@TrevorPlaysGuitar2
@TrevorPlaysGuitar2 5 ай бұрын
The "Main" knob controls the output for the entire unit but the playback volume seems to be set - I wish there was a way to lower just the playback volume.

Hey brother, it’s Lefty Collins. Just got mine too. In the unboxing and firmware updating phase. But that is a very interesting tidbit about no volume control. But I pretty much have the same set up you do. I use the zoom ACC one as my volume boost Instead of the LR bags which I’ve also used in the past. And a boss RC 30. I use the Porchboard base and what I like about the RC 30 is the ability to loop both the Porchboard base and the rhythm track and one single motion. Sure this year looper does that I just haven’t figured out how to do it yet. I also use the boost function on the AC one for my solos currently so it’s something I’m already used to.

@TrevorPlaysGuitar2

There are 3 inputs for instruments/mics - you will definitely be able to loop the guitar and porch board, no problem. There's also a 2 track option so you don't have to overdub - and it has a foot switch input for an a/b switch for easier control.

I have the Sheeran looper for a couple of weeks now and I fully agree about the volume, I have just controlled my volume from the guitar BUT I am no where near as profecient as you are as a musician and I could never look anywhere as cool as you do…. Thank you

Thank you... from Nashville! Much appreciated. It really is a great looper with lots of options to explore. The problem I have is a complete lack of focus lol. I've tried using the volume on the guitar before - I'd turn it up for the solo, forget about turning it up, set the next song and realize I had no more head room.

In song mode does it let you change to the chorus at the end of the loop or is it automatic when you click on it?

If you're running your instrument through a volume pedal that would also address the problem wouldn't it? I have a volume pedal before my current looper now, since most sound guys tend to not give ukuleles enough volume. It's just a matter of remembering to turn the pedal down after your solo. Awesome video and love the input since i'm in the research phase of this pedal!
