When someone hits you, all the peepers fall off, but you also take some extra damage for every peeper stuck to you. That's how you died when he hit you. From what I remember, you can also remove peepers by spraying them with spray paint, but you still take a bit of damage per peeper. You don't take the damage from the shovel though, so it's still safer.

Tip for Austin: The big giant (Redwood Giant) is friendly, but he can stomp on you if you are on his way. I also saw the DEV commenting, so I won't spoil it, but he will actually help you if you get a Forest Giant close to him.
