Sheffield United Are Absolutely Screwed

Following automatic promotion from the Championship three months ago, Sheffield United have sold their two best players - one to relegation rivals Burnley - and have only reinvested £10 million in new signings.
Last season, the Blades had unpaid bills, an unusable training ground, and a three-month transfer embargo - but this season, the concern for the Saudi Arabian owned Yorkshire outfit is on the pitch.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at Sheffield United's chaotic pre-season preparations, dreadful transfer business, and what their prospects look like in the Premier League this season.

Ahmedhodžić is excellent but Ndiaye will show in years to come how good he is. Anel on a longer contract. Ndiaye (went to his boyhood club) and Sander were in last year of their contracts so Blades cashed in. Someone probably buy Anel in Jan if they don't sell the club.

Are you sponsored by wednesday? Don't write us off pal, I'm confident we'll stay up. Berge has a good game about 1 in 3 and is slow to react, good when he get's going but doesn't do it enough. He's 7 foot tall and can't jump or head a ball, can't tackle and it takes him a second or 2 to even realize the ball's at his feet. Brilliant bit of business getting rid and bringing in sousa. Yeah losing Illiman hurt, really hurt, but barring that we're in a lot better position than you are making out. Write us off and be prepared to wipe that Ostrich egg off your face 😂

The Ndiaye saga is frustrating as a blade. OM is his boyhood club, so it's a dream move for him. However, he's played for us all pre season, and even filmed the video making it look like he was set to stay, only to confirm his departure about 10 days before the first game of the season. I wish him well, but the terms "creek", "paddle" and "without" come to mind. I just wish the leadership had been more sensible about his original contract at this point.

Yep, the PL money is needed to right the ship and hopefully get the club financially stable, especially with the parachute payments. £8 mill in bonuses still to be paid out as well. The club needs restructuring top to bottom.

Exactly, 1 year in the prem followed by 3 years of parachute payments is about £180m. In comparison 4 years in the championship comes to about £30m. The best business model for a club that can't stay in the prem, is to be promoted as often as possible and yo-yo up and down.

Harsh but true. However he didn't mention some positives. 1: The Sheff Utd defence is still in tact and is still very good, so don't think Sheff Utd will concede many this season, however they'll really struggle to create any chances, never mind score. The midfield and attack is much weaker than last season. 2: The doom and gloom might be short lived because apparently Sheff Utd still have 4 or 5 major signings to make before the transfer window closes. So lets see what happens in the coming weeks.

This kinda reminds me of when Forest got promoted by hammering the Div.1 with Kevin Campbell and Pierre Van Hooijdonk banging in excessive goals. Upon gaining promotion, they proceeded to sell all their good players in a fire sale whilst PvH was on holiday, after having convinced him to stay by promising to invest in the squad and be able to compete effectively at PL level. You can all see how that went down with Pierre..... and we know Forest went down like a Steve Stone!

@@judefenton3230 You set the new record for the most goals conceded in a 38 games season, beating Derby by eight goals with 3 matches still to go, so you'll probably also beat Swindon Town's record of 100 goals, and they had to play four more games. I can only imagine the horrors you had to endure this season, but at least you have something to look forward to in the Championship (if that makes you feel any better). In reality, if any of the promoted teams survives that will be a massive overachievement, bordering on a miracle. As someone had already said, Luton were buying as if they barely survived in the Championship, Sheffield were selling as if they just got relegated to League One, and Burnley basically looked at the team that got them promoted and decided "we don't need any of that", then placed all their survival hopes on a bunch of children

What a lot of people who haven't watched us regularly don't see with Berge is that, yes he's a brilliant player and has excellent moments, but he also goes missing in games a lot and is too far laid back, not putting effort into tackles. Even worse is he's the biggest bloke on the pitch but doesn't even bother trying to win aerial duels. As for Ndiaye can't really blame him. Could have gone last year for a lot more money but stayed to get us promoted. And it was his boyhood club that came for him. Most people would do it. Also we offered a contract that would have made him the highest paid player in our history which he turned down to go to the club he supports. Wish nothing but the best for him. Both of these were going at some point anyway whether we stayed up or went down, so selling now makes more sense than letting them run the last year of their contract down and then go for nothing. £20m/£12m and a sell on clause is better than £0 and no sell on clause.

Accept that you don't stand a chance of avoiding relegation and collect those EPL payments to help you build up a more stable team and organization from 2025/2026 season onwards. Don't think they have any other choice.

Blade here, the owner wants to sell the club so he will really have no incentive to invest money. He spent a fair bit a couple of years ago but it wasn’t a success. I can see him thinking to recoup losses and the team must just try and survive. If we do I expect he would spend next year, but right now we are seriously going to have a monumental struggle and your video is totally on the money. Being Blades we are used to struggling though. The finances of the club do need to be taken care of and gambling lots of money to try and stay up often fails.

As a Sheffield United fan it's tough to see all this. I think defense is the strongest group of players we have. Ahmedhodžić, Trusty, Basham and Egan will rotate as starters in a back three. I think Max Lowe will do just fine, and Bogle will do fine once he's back. We also have some depth in defense with Jack Robinson, Larouci, Baldock and Norrington-Davies (sill injured?). I think if we can swing it, we should sign another young central defender. I think the midfield is very weak. With injuries to Fleck (serious), Norwood (questionable), and Coulibaly (doubtful) I think the midfield is a wash. Yes, we signed Vinicius and Ben Silmane, but they aren't proven in real high level play. Sure the fees are fair, but I'm not sure they're enough. I guess we have arblaster who's a decent young player and Ben Osborn who can play in the midfiled and wingback. I think we really need a quality signing in midfield, maybe two. I think the attack is also quite weak. We have Brewster (questionable) and McBurnie (questionable), who I think will start most games if healthy. I'm excited to see Jebbison once he's healthy and even Osula. We're linked with Akpom who would play more of that Ndaiye role, but Sheffield isn't willing to meet a 10 million asking price. I think Akpom is well worth that. Hopefully we can sign a couple decent players before the window closes.

It feels like the gulf between the teams who will almost certainly be in the top half of the prem and the teams fighting relegation has become massive this year and that might make it an interesting battle; i.e. maybe 25 or 28 points will be enough to stay up. Bleak seasons for some.

I think for more than a few of them, they need one season of PL money to try and get the books balanced. It looks like Sheffield United are being honest about that, but if they are, maybe they aren't communicating it well enough with the fans. If instead of spending £30m on a player it is used to get the training and youth facilities up to the very top level, maybe in a few seasons time they aren't looking in to the loan market, but are instead building a team around a core of local talent and making a lot of money when they do sell them on. I think teams that rely upon great scouting for example tend to hit a wall as other teams adopt their methods and they lose their advantage. As good as Brighton look at this point in time, I'll be far from shocked if they fade over the next few seasons and get relegated

It's a shame you don't know the premier League loan rules. The limit of 2 loans at any one time that you talk about at 15:14 is only on domestic loans, so Larouci won't count towards that limit. Also when you mention getting both Doyle and McAtee back on loan at 14:45, they couldn't do that either, as there is a limit of 1 loan player from a single club.

The reason for the turmoil is the old owner had agreed a deal to sell so he basically lost interest in the club and temporarily stopped funding it and paying bills. It wasn't a case of not being able to afford to pay the bills, it was more about refusing to pay, so admin was never a serious proposition. The logic was....the new owner can decide which players need new contracts etc, so all projects were put on hold. The takeover took 4 months, until eventually it was rejected, so the old owner started funding the club again and he's taking a semi interest again. In a recent interview in July23 he said there are 2 parties showing serious interest and he may end up staying on with a 20% owership share.

Berge being sold to a relegation rival is the best business ever. If I knew about, I would have offered to drive him down myself. Great player on his day, but for the other 7 out of the 8 games he's a total passenger and a waste of space. He goes missing, doesn't track back, can't tackle, for someone who's 6'5" he can't head the ball either, has very low football IQ (makes wrong choices when in possesion). I could go on, but watch him have that 1 good game against us. The only other thing I would say that you forgot to mention is that a lot of our current players are also on the wrong side of 30. It makes no sense for us to tie them down to long term contracts. Fleck being perfect example, 3 years ago he was integral to us. Now you can bet your house on us losing everytime he plays. We need to re-evaluate these players at the end of the season, if it means we lose them, i don't think it would be a massive loss.
