My geography and games teacher, Ralph O’Donnell (No.5), played for Wednesday in this match and also in the famous replay. He was sacked by the school for going on a pre-season tour of Nigeria with Wednesday. He’d be earning X thousands of pounds a week today.

it wasn't the first cantilever stand. There were plenty built before it, not least the one at Scunthorpe's Old Show Ground. The Scunthorpe one was the first such stand in English football. They were commonplace overseas and at racecourses before Wednesday's one became the second to be built at a Football League venue.

Full marks to the players who played on what can be described as a boggy field! The standard of football, considering the atrocious conditions was good. However, until English pitches could be relied upon to be genuine turf throughout the season, as opposed to a sea of mud, skill and close ball control was less important than stamina and effort!
