I use the terra cotta spikes for our outdoor plants and they’re great. I have two self-watering pots and I like them, although I don’t find watering the rest of my plants the normal way to be a burden. I bottom water all my plants, even my very large peace lily and frilly fern. I have two moisture meters and they’ve been a game-changer for me. Best plant tool ever.

Great video! I would never water over a sink without having a dishpan or something to catch the water. It saves precious possibly fertilised water and stops bits from washing out of the pots into the drain

I noticed that a lot of my water mix would just run down the drain, so I started putting a bin underneath it so I could then pour back into my container and continue using the water &/ or have some plants bottom water in it. Also, I have a fine mesh sink strainer just in case perlite, etc. spill out which does happens a lot 🫠

Does this present any issues with spreading disease amongst the plants? I guess if you don't have any diseased plants, you'll be fine. But I would be leery of sharing water. Kind of like kids sharing milk in the cafeteria at school. Maybe I'm just paranoid!
@gracevandenbergen
@gracevandenbergen 21 күн бұрын
@@tommaxwell429 I'm the same. I might reuse the water left in the dish for the same plant if it looks like it could go for seconds. But using the 'splash back' water for the next plant seems risky for my plants as they have sentimental value - if I inadvertently spread a bug or disease I would be heartbroken. So I prefer to throw that water out. That's the cost of doing business. 😂

Mr Sheffield.... you really should get yourself a water butt! It will save all that water conditioning and having to buy distilled water for the carnivores :D I bought a large cheap black bin from Amazon cut a hole in it's lid and then adjusted/cut the downpipe from my conservatory guttering to feed through the lid. It's always full and my plants absolutely love it! Haven't used tap water for over 2 years.

I'm quite sure I mentioned that I mist both my fern/spider plants. The misting saved both of them. The fern especially because it was littering my carpet around the clock. I mist them once in the morning and that's it. The spider plant stopped yellowing immediately and although growing slower than expected, it's producing new growth which is good to see. I side with misting sparingly and thoroughly water distilled.

Because of fungus gnats, I started bottom watering. So instead of walking around with a watering can, I now pick three or four plants every day, and I don’t even need to stick my finger in or use my moisture meter… I just press down on the soil, and if it’s hard and doesn’t spring back, it means it’s probably wet down the bottom. But if it is springy and has a bit of give in it then it’s probably dry and needs a drink. So I take each and every one of my plants to the sink these days instead of using a watering can and I fill up the sink and let them sit in there for an hour before returning them to their spot. they all seem very happy and I have amazing growth with everything at the moment so I’m doing something right! As for the fungus gnats… I have tried bottom watering, mosquito bits, neem oil, cinnamon, and clear plastic gnat catchers… and I’m thinking that the cinnamon seems to be working the best. However it might be just a cycle… They may all just be dormant at the moment and come back and annoy the crap out of me in a few more weeks.

You can always plug the sink you are watering over and scoop that runoff water into your watering can again and again so that you use up most of it. You only have to tip off the watering can when you’ve used so much water from the sink that you don’t have enough for runoff of other plants. You can also use a bowl if you have one big enough. I have a few bowls that are about 15” across that I love to use for this purpose specifically. The bowl allows me to pick it up and pour the runoff water back into my watering can.

For plants that hate becoming dry - even once - like Boston Ferns, I have found the smaller terracotta spikes with integral transparent water reservoirs invaluable. I quickly realised that I hadn’t appreciated how thirsty they get when the relative humidity of the air is low, rather than being made thirsty by the heat per sa. This now obvious to me phenomena, had caused me to miss judge how often to check them. Now, I just need to glance at the reservoir and that also provides me with a large margin of safety. For these type of plants that always like moist soil, they appear to do very much better with this watering regime with no brown crispy bits but lots of lush strong foliage. For your carnivores, have you thought about a rain gutter down pipe diverter and barrel? You can then use rain water for all your plants. Alas, buying de-ionised water is cheaper than distilling water yourself. Just worked it out that at 25.5p per kWh it would cost about 18 ½ p per litre just in electricity.

Great video! I bought a Cool Beauty Dieffenbachia Color and noticed a sticker on it touting its automatic watering system. When I looked it up it is just a wicking system, basically a string hanging out of the bottom of the pot that runs up into the pot. It acts like a wick to draw the water up into the pot. I guess it works but I see it as bit of nothing. Anyway, I like the drown and drain method and seem to have pretty good luck with it. I have an old recycle bin that I have converted into a rain collection system so I have rain water unless it goes dry. I have a patio that I can take my plants out to and just drown them and let them sit for 20-30 mins until they stop dripping. Repeat when the ole meter says dry. Thanks for pointing out the differences between watering strategies for the different species. I think we tend to treat them all the same which can lead to overwatering the succulents. I've been looking for the House Plant Focus here in the states without much luck. I don't see it on Amazon here. How about a video on your favorite plant stands/ladders. I don't have a lot of window sill space so I need some stands I can place inside the room a ways

I have an Opuntia with long, thin paddles, and for the past two years she's been my "water monitor" for all the cacti and succulents. When her uppermost paddles start to shrivel, I know it's almost time to water the cacti; I actually do it when her paddles start to bend over (immersing everybody in a shallow bin until they're completely soaked). Once she's been watered, her paddles stand back up and fill back out within 48 hours, and the cycle starts again. And I haven't lost a single cactus or succulent to over/underwatering since I started relying on her.

Should I still water them until the water starts pouring out from the bottom? I've noticed the soil doesn't dry out easily coz they receive light but not much heat & I don't want the roots to rot. Currently, I'm giving them around 0.5 - 1 glass of water every 4-5 days, based on the soil check. Pls advise

I couldn’t comment on the short you did regarding pH imbalance so I’m commenting regarding pH imbalance here. I hope you respond. I think my problem with my kalancloe is PH imbalance but I don’t know how to correct it. I tried a rapid test device and unfortunately it didn’t help. I tried test strips and they didn’t help. I have my kalancloe in loose soil, and I have tried watering less and also watering more. According to what I have read, it is in the correct location as far as temperature and sunlight. I have fertilized it with a recommended fertilizer. But the leaves continue to turn yellow and eventually die. Can you either help or point me in the direction of help?

I get so much confused of watering the plant different ways, like pouring water under the extra pot. Maybe because I lost 4 in 3 weeks while learning. I felt very sad too cause it was my fault.😒

It’s akin to desert weather patterns. Some deserts go weeks without water and then it all dumps down at once! The soil is completely saturated, but then the water drains away quick

The right pot size and any good cactus/succulent soil mix will ensure the water leaves at the right pace! You’ve got decades of horticultural knowledge on the internet now to take advantage of!

It works great, though. I immerse all of my cacti and euphorbias in a shallow storage bin of water every 4-6 weeks. I let them sit for about 20-30 minutes before pulling them out, letting them drain, and putting them back in their cachepots. I used to kill cacti due to either overwatering or underwatering, but haven't lost a single one since I started immersing them a couple of years ago. I buy cheap cacti at Ikea and big-box DIY stores, and they're all thriving.

can somebody help me? My Pinguicula is getting holes on the leaves, leaves are not as sticky as they were before and the leaves wilt very fast - what could be wrong with it? I only watered with destilled water 😢 it's on my kitchen counter beside the fruit basket and is supposed to catch all the nasty flying things but it doesn't anymore (it gets only morning direct sun) Help, please 🤣

Some of these meter readers are hit and miss. I returned one as did not work at all. Despite watering thoroughly it kept reading dry. I have one at the moment sometimes it reads dry after I have watered the plant and other plants it reads correctly. Difficult one really.
@chleda15
@chleda15 Ай бұрын
Same thing with me. I bought one but it would read dry all the time even if I just watered the plant earlier in the day. I just use bamboo/ wood skewers to check but also have an Excel spreadsheet of all my plants with notes and keep track of the last 2 waterings per plant. From there I know which plants I don't have to check to water for at least 2 weeks, 3 1/2 weeks, etc. This helps me try not to over water which I have a problem with 😅

Yes like me I make a note on an app called calendar notes when I water my plants as having so many I cannot remember which one was watered and which I had fertilised. @@chleda15

Its interesting how there are so many ways of watering plants that work 😊 I like to take my plants out of the cover pot, put the nursery pot in a bowl, top water until it comes out at the bottom, leave to soak for 20-30 minutes and then put the plants back.
