Dr Sheila Reith was administering insulin to her daughter Fiona - a type 1 diabetic - when she wondered how she could make the injections easier.
It led to the development of insulin pens, which soon replaced syringes as the way to take the drug for millions of people. Dr Reith has been recognised with a Lifetime Achievement award for her contribution to medicine at the Pride of Britain awards 2024.
